I just had to show you my newest "girls". These babies will grow up to be my laying hens. Believe it or not, there were 16 of the little peepers in this box, and they get shipped via U.S. Mail. I picked them up at the Post Office a couple of weeks ago:

Since they are Rhode Island Red chickens, and because we love san (who is NOT from Rhode Island but she's close), Ashley chose her favorite chicken and named it...Sandi. Sandi likes to take naps on Ashley's stomach:

Makayla couldn't get left out, of course, she had to let Sandi help with the cookie baking on Friday. Yup, a live chicken in the kitchen. Sigh.

It's hard to believe these little fuzzy peepers are going to grow up and be big fat red hens in just a couple of months, isn't it?

How adorable - I can't imagine how thrilling it must be for a little girl like Makayla to have a box full of baby chicks!

She's so lucky to have all natural things to play with, a vegetable garden, horse, cows, chicks and of course Wonder Wiener and Umm ma.

Well Jack, you are wrong, again! I did not "do a search for 'are there any vegetables that critters will not eat' when you already knew the answer was no". You see, after I finished reading all of these wonderful and informative comments, I did further research and LEARNED (because I am still capable of admitting I don't know everything) that deer/critters in one area will eat some things while deer/critters in other areas eat other things and that most vegetables will ultimately be subject to deer/critter consumption. But you have to admit you have a way of going off topic.

My Catmint usually does open up in the middle when it gets loaded with blooms, but not drastically, more like gracefully. Once it does this though it's time to cut back to around 4" for repeat bloom. The soil they are planted in in sandy, gravelly infertile soil and they do best there. I have Nepeta musinii and although the base of the oldest plant is only about 20" in dimension when in bloom it is about 3'. If something is nibbling on your plants it may be cats. 2 of 6 of my neighbors cats take a bite now and again throughout the season. One cat, now deceased (so sad), used to like to take afternoon naps right in the middle of one. I'd have to fluff it back up LOL! BTW this is one plant you don't want to set-seed unless you are willing to deal with a gazillion seedlings each spring/summer. I thought I could harvest seeds from these my first year but it's impossible not to have 100 seed drop to the ground while you're cutting stems to insert in paper bags! ACK!! Here is Catmint on May 16th and May 26th. By the time I cut them back on June 5th the flowering spires were 2x as long and opening up in the center. From experience I know a ton of seed is beginning to form at this point :O Really don't have manu plants that flop to the point of unsightliness; at least not due to rain. If Blue Flax is in heavy bloom and it rains they will lay down until they dry out again...usually within hours. We did get some much needed rain over the last few days though; there won't be much more of that for the next 4 months! Wind is another story! I do have to cut back Maximilian Sunflower 2 times to get them wider and bushier than tall. I also cut back Heliopsis (False Sunflower) and Hollyhock. This year will be trying it on Aster laevis (Smooth Blue Aster), last year it's 2nd year it was looking really nice until winds made a mess out of them! I do have 2 dry sandy/gravelly beds and one partial dry and I keep it that way for dry heat loving plants: Catmint, Lavender, Salvia, Thyme, Carl foerster Grass, Sedum, Bearded Iris, Blue Flax, Echinacea, Hyssopus, Rose Campion, Shasta Daisy, Coreopsis lanceolata, Feverfew and Agastache foeniculum. Peony does well here too. This is a bed that faces south and is the south border of my one of my veg beds. Annuals that grow well in this dry bed are: Statice, Snapdragon, Larkspur, Moss Rose, Nigella, Sweet Alyssum, Cynoglossum, Gazania, Venidium, Coreopsis tinctoria and Verbena bonariensis. When we first moved here, I wanted to "save" every bird and critter that needed help, and quickly learned no one else around here was as worried about the wild things as I was. Our first year, a big owl crashed THROUGH the fiberglass skylite panel on the roof of the chicken coop. He cut his head and hurt a wing. I called all over southern Oklahoma and no one (least of all the local Fish and Wildlife people) were interested in helping that owl. I was crushed. Finally, we moved him to an adjacent small guinea coop/pen and put the guineas in with the chickens. We left the door open, and he finally flew away on his own after several days. I refused to catch mice for him, so he had to live on canned cat food for those few days. I guess if you live in an area where wildlife is very abundant, people don't get as excited about one injured bird. If blue jays are engangered, you can't tell it here! We probably are overpopulated with birds, though, because we put out food for them and have a constant water source. I HAVE noticed that there are more birds than usual hanging out around the garden and eating bugs in the garden. Birds are a terrific method of pest control, so I encourage them in every way possible. We ALWAYS have a pair of owls who stay together all the time and hunt together. One is a really big barn owl, and we call him Hooty. The other is a little screech owl, obviously named Screechy. You never see one without the other, which is fascinating. They've been here as long as we have. I don't know if the current Hooty and Screechy pair are the actual same Hooty and Screechy pair that we first saw in 1999. I think it is an odd pairing. I feel sorry for them....the crows harass them relentlessly and try to run them off. Our owls are mostly out at night, but every now and then I see them out late in the morning. For all the birds we have coming to the feeders, predator birds do not come into the yard much. Maybe the cats and dogs help keep them away? Oh, and the Purple Martins also like to chase off other birds attempting to "hunt" in their territory too. Dawn

I'm so sorry that Patches had that nasty reaction to the excessive dose of Cypro. Give her a day or two to purge it from her system, then try it again at a dose of 1/8 pill once daily and see if it helps get her eating. Cypro works to stimulate appetite in some cats within 15 mins (my Billy is one of them). In other cats, it can take up to 2 1/2 days for the appetite stimulant effect to occur. In some cats, cypro doesn't help stimulate appetite at all. You just have to try it for a while and see how it affects Patches at an appropriate dose. The thing with hyperT is that it speeds up the entire metabolism (heart, kidneys, everything). Even if Patches' kidneys are not functioning fully, the effects of hyperT force them to work harder than they would otherwise. In bloodwork, that forced hyperactivity looks like normal kidney function. So even with renal failure, an uncontrolled hyperT cat's bloodwork may indicate normal kidney function. That's why you have to get Patches' thyroid level back to normal before you can assess the current true state of her kidneys. After you get her thyroid level back down to normal range, if her kidney values stay in normal range , then you can rest assured that her kidneys really are healthy. If, however, her kidney values rise when her thyroid level normalizes, that will indicate some degree of renal insufficiency. When you start Patches back on methimazole, ask your vet about the transdermal gel. Methimazole can be formulated as a transdermal gel that is rubbed into the ear flap. Administration via this route bypasses the digestive tract and avoids problems with nausea that are common side effects of the oral form of the drug. But again, I strongly recommend that you request (insist) that the dose be started low and gradually increased only if proven necessary according to follow-up bloodwork performed at 2-3 week intervals anytime there is a change in dosage. Cancerous thyroid tumors are uncommon. They occur in a very small percentage of cases, so don't lose sleep over that possibility. Laurie

I love the girls, they're so cute! I think my mailman would freak out if he had to deliver live chicks, LOL!

My gosh at first I thought it was a box of hamsters -- they almost look like they have golden fur! Very pretty.

Makayla is cuter than all the chicks put together.

Yes, the chicks get sent by mail. Two days without food and water, I don't know why no one complains, I hate it. Still, all 16 arrived intact and healthy. The mailperson doesn't deliver them though, they get shipped COD, I had to pick them up at the post office myself.

Dedtired, hamsters? LOL They are fuzzy, though, just starting to get some feathers now.

Makayla was hot and sweaty, my kitchen was hot and she was wearing that smear of chocolate from eating the chocolate chips. Still, she's a beautiful little monkey, and very gentle with the "chickies".

Sharon, Makayla has lots of "modern" toys, one of those battery powered quadrunners, a bicycle, a dollhouse that "talks". Still, she prefers the chickens, the horse, the WonderWeiner. She's a farm girl, through and through. Amanda says Makayla loves me because I'm just another 3 year old, and her favorite plaything. That's not so bad, I guess. LOL

I grew up on an egg ranch. Our chickens were never as cute as these!

(If anyone wants to say I grew up on a 'Chicken Ranch', please feel free to have fun at my expense, LOL)

I grew up on a farm, and we had chickens also - just for the eggs. It was scary sometimes collecting eggs because I would frequently find cottonmouth snakes in the barn, and they are very dangerous. I liked the chickens when I was very young and used to chase them around to pet them. Of course they didn't like being caught, but I would chase them until they got tired and gave up. I didn't name them because they were all white, and I couldn't tell them apart.

After we no longer had chickens, a couple of wild (or loose) peacocks (one peacock and one peahen) decided to move into the empty chicken coop. The peacock moved in first and was a bit neurotic because he wasn't getting enough attention, and so he would strut for anything with a pair of eyes, including my agoraphobic cat, whom he terrorized whenever I took him outside. The cat was named Tina, but that was before I found out he was a male. He was married to my other cat Eichendorff, whom I called "Ike" for short, although I had to have the marriage annulled.

Yes, Chase, these are strictly layers, none for the pot out of this bunch. The young roosters are already strutting their stuff at Dad's, they don't realize they're gonna be pot pie in the fall. LOL

If we were going to eat these, I'd never let the girls make pets of them, that's just too difficult. They are strictly egg layers for the next several years. I'm kind of wondering if Sandi is still going to sleep on Ashley's stomach after she gets bigger, a Rhode Island Red can weigh 5 or 6 pounds at least.

Lars, those white chickens DO look just alike. Fortunately, my girls will have some very small differences, enough that I'll still be able to tell them apart although I doubt that the kids will.

I think it is lovely to name a chickie after our dear san! I'd be honored to have one named teresa - so why not woodie, ann, sol, lars, lakeguy (you've already got a david), wizard, chase, jessyf, etc. etc. You get the picture!

Isn't it amazing that they still ship baby chicks by mail just like they've done probably since mail service began? I think that is so cool! I still want a little chicken house and some chickens for fresh eggs.

LOL, Teresa, the only problem with those names is that I'd have to eat Lars and Lakeguy in the fall. (grin) Also PKguy and Scott.

It does amaze me that they haven't found a better way to ship baby chicks but it works, clearly. Mine are all still intact and weren't harmed at all so I guess it must be OK.

Jessy and EJ might just work.

My Grandmother had a pet chicken that she still crys about. When she was little the bird would come in the house and lay an egg in the cupboard. Must have been a real farm house. One day while she was at school her dad sold the bird not knowing it had become a pet.

Only a little monkey could out cute a baby chick.
