These last minute changes seem to be nature of the beast :-) Although my garden show entry is only a container display rather than a fantasy garden, it still suffers from the same 11th hour alterations. Just moments before the truck was to be loaded with this and the materials for two other vignette displays, we had to make a plant substitution. A mature Corokia cotoneaster (wire bush) that was the focal point of one container because of its very stark, architectural presence was deemed to look a little too "dead". If one is at all familiar with this shrub, that's pretty much its normal winter appearance but it was felt that the general gardening public may not realize this and wonder why we would include a dead plant as part of our competition display! And we elected to use Irish moss for the carpet that grounded the 5 various sized containers. The 20 flats were grown on for us by a local wholesaler with heat to encourage some rich, lush growth in winter. They got just a little too "hairy" with this process and we had to mow them all with scissors to get the right look. The good news is the Edgeworthia that anchors one of the other containers is at just the perfect bloom stage and the fragrance is enchanting! The show opens here this Wednesday.

Thank you all. Rick, we had heavy rain all week last week. Most of the blooms felt off, but 1/3 still hang on and now perk up. They do look pretty but not as full. One week of rain ruin most of the blooms in my garden. (good for my grass). Marie

How big should they be before planting in the garden?

Do you have any deer around? If so, I'd plant them in large pots and wait until they are more mature. If pests are not a problem, you can transplant them in your zone as soon as they have their second set of leaves. We have a lot of deer here in East Texas, so I'm switching over to pots now for baby seedlings. I don't like sacrificing my daylily babies to them! Nancy

Wintersowing my cottage garden - big pictures.

This was my first year so people at the wintersowing forum can certainly provide better or more complete advice than I can, especially for cooler zones. I used two liter containers. I cut them in half and used my band saw to cut slits in the bottom for drainage. I used Scott's pro potting mix with a bit more peat moss tossed in for the medium. I soaked it well, scattered my seeds, and cut a slit so that the top half could slide back down over the bottom. As for watering, I only had to worry about that when I planted out. Things germinated for me a lot earlier than some because of a warm spell in early January. We got up into the 70s for a week or two and everything started popping. As soon as they have two sets of leaves, the true ones, I planted out. I watered them well when I set them in the garden and walked away. Because it's still so cold, slugs and pill bugs weren't an issue. And these were all hardy perennials, not annuals. Some things that should bloom the second year are already blooming for me thanks to the warm January. They got their vernalization early and I didn't have to wait another year. If you sow in the early fall, you can do the same in colder climates. The bottles create a little greenhouse and protect the seeds from birds and squirrels. This year, I plan to do things a little differently. I'll sow fewer seeds into smaller containers. At least 3" of soil is necessary though. Trying to divide containers of nicotiana and petunias drove me crazy. I'll just be planting the entire hunk as one plug this time around. I still direct sow some things like reseeding annuals. I still grow tomatoes under lights inside. But for perennials, no muss, no fuss, toss, plunk and run. Wow. Your garden is beautiful and serene. I have a Cecil Bruener that would do that if I had a bower constructed over the gate. On the list but toward the bottom I'm afraid.

Beautiful roses and spring flowers Christine and Eileen.

Christine is that a New Dawn rose by any chance? I wish I also had a garden arch and a cascading rose like that.
But this isn't really the ideal climate and growing roses is an uphill struggle in our location.

Sharon, it's Dr. Van Fleet. I think New Dawn is a sport of it. The flowers are identical, but this one doesn't repeat. So I decided it must be Dr. Van Fleet. And I don't think New Dawn gets big enough to swallow everything in its path, as this one does. It was here when we moved in thirty years ago.

Eileen, your CÃ©cile Brunner is beautiful. I love these delicate pinks. And that intense California sky!

OMG, CC, those are just beautiful. I don't have a lot of flowers, I mostly grow vegetables, but I just love to see other people's flowers...

Annie, that Cecil Bruener grows in spite of me! I grew it from a cutting one year long ago. The cutting came from a monster bush on my MIL's hill behind her house. The deer LOVE it. I started a whole bunch of roses from cuttings two years in a row. I had a lot of success except with some of the heirloom varieties, they were more vulnerable to molds and that was the year we had a very moist spring and early summer.

I grow parking lot plants. ;-) I'm actually a capable gardener but I don't have the time these days.

Oh Karen that is lovely. What are the blue and white flowers? You have put a lot of work into your garden.

My poor peonies had just opened when the big storm came through. They got clobbered.

I wish I had more time to work on my beds. One of them is still only half mulched.

Pam, the blue and white flowers are Campanula persicifolia, peach-leaved bellflower. Very easy and adaptable. If we ever have another Philly suburbs get-together, I'll bring you some.
Thanks for all the nice comments, everybody. This is such a great time of year, with so many flowers at their peak.

Oh yes I see that Dr. W. Van Fleet produced New Dawn as a sport. I'm just looking now at one of my rose encyclopedias and there are some stunning photos of Dr. Van Fleet and it really is a vigorous climber isn't it. I love so much those masses of pink roses cascading all over an archway.

I remember we had a lot of those blue Campanulas in my grandpa's garden in Canada when I was small.
Spring flowers are the best aren't they.
