Foodie road trip

Saturday DD, her b/f and I took a road trip to Cincinnati to purchase cake supplies for her up comming baby shower. First we went to Sugarcraft.

Sugarcraft has a store in front and a huge warehouse attached. It has most anything you would need for baking or candy making. We spent 2 hours there! They only have an online catalogue so I printed out my order ahead of time and they filled it while we browsed.

There was so much to look at I forgot to take pictures inside the store.

We decided we would have lunch at a little Caribbean themed restaurant. I had high hopes of reliving some of my childhood food memories(the owner was Puerto Rican) I ordered carne asada with red beans and rice.

The food was meh, ok but not great.

Next stop was Jungle Jim's- " a 4 acre food lovers paradise-the tri states largest and most unique grocery store"

All I can say is wow! This place is huge, and has hundreds of varieties of cheeses, meats, and about anything you can think of. The prices were good too, except for the $119.99 a lb. prosciutto I sampled-yummy! Again there was so much to see and sample I forgot to take pictures, Next time I go I will bring coolers and stock up on everything that I can't find locally. Oh and I will wear jogging shoes!

Here is a trial cake using some edible images I got at Sugarcraft. I'll have to practice using the images, they are fragile and tear easily. Yes thats a bite taken out of the cake! DD being silly.

Di, this looks like a fun trip and it's nice to have alook at you and your daughter -- a couple of cuties. I never saw stores like either one of these. No wonder they call it Foodies!

I never heard of an edible image, but the cake is darling even with the missing bite.

You should post a link to this on the Conversations side so everyone can enjoy it. I think most people forget to check in here.

Looks like a fun foodie day! You look fabulous and your daughter is adorable, when is she due?

I have never heard of edible images, either, but I'd have taken a bite out of that cake, too! Looks delish and I am not even a cake lover!

I just got mine (2011 version from Publications International, edited by Linda Z) today, literally just finished it and came to post. It really does just repeat what the NCHFP site says, I'm not sure all of the recipes are there but the basics are (no soups or meats, just fruit and veggies) but it is very clear and easy to follow, I like the spiral binding. I also like that it's half the price of So Easy, and that I don't have to refer to website or Ball book (not a spiral binding). Very good for beginner - I was going to give it to my sister, but she's moving to Japan so I may have to hang onto it for a while ;-) - or she may find it very handy there, the problem might be finding jars, though new guidance is that you can reuse commercial jars as long as standard rings and flats fit. I can send her some flats and she can reuse rings over and over. Though I think they tend to use a lot of plastic packaging over there, not glass jars.

Road Trip for Peaches??

Hey Beth, I'd love to comparison test, not as competition, but for the pure joy of the peaches. It's just that I've eaten more SC peaches, having had a daughter that lived in Spartanburg for several years. My experience with Ga peaches has probably been from shipped peaches, and that was an unfair statement, so may I take that statement back? We all know that straight from the orchard is far superior. One of our greatest pleasures when the peaches come in is peaches, cut up, and sugared on hot buttered biscuits for breakfast. We eat fresh strawberries the same way. Nothing wrong with what Linda said, either...eating out of hand with the juice running down your arm. OT, but I had a glazed black raspberry turnover, that I bought at one of our Farmers Markets yesterday, for breakfast this morning and it was very good. I don't usually like that sort of thing for breakfast but I had been up for 2 hours so it wasn't like rolling out of bed and eating immediately. And the tartness of the raspberries cut the sweet of the glaze...very good! Ah the fruits of summer!!!! jude

We did it about 5 yrs ago. We live in CT. Our itinerary was 3+ weeks and involved flights, but, FWIW.... here is what we did. We drove to Burlington VT. Stopped for lunch in Great Barrington; cute town on the way. Did the bike ride along and "into" Lake Champlain. Loved it. Stayed 1 or 2 nights. Then we drove to Montreal, spent the afternoon, (shopping and lunch, must eat at Arthur's!), and continued on to Quebec City. 3 nights there, highlight was plein aire Cirque du Soleil, and the food. Bayard IIRC. Casual. Then we *flew* to Toronto, and from there drove to Niagara on the Lake (the charming Canadian side). Great food again Treadwelll (farm to table), and a jet boat tour of the Falls. Then we flew (IIRC all the flights were Westjet) to Halifax from Hamilton, ON. From Halifax drove to Cape Breton, spent a few nights there. Did some hiking and whale watching and beach walking and moose spotting. Drove around the island to get to the PEI ferry. Took the car ferry to PEI. Spent a few days there. Singing sands, jumping off the bridge at Souris, touring Cavendish Park, and the home Anne of Green Gables. Loved PEI. Drove over the PEI bridge and stayed in St. John to break up the drive and stay at a cool hotel for the kids with an indoor/outdoor slide. On to Bay of Fundy, where we stayed in Canadian Park Svc yurts overlooking the BOF. Walked the BOF, also ziplined over the coast. Misc hikes. The drove to Bar Harbor for a few days and hiked in Acadia. Lovely park and great little town. Then we drove to Rockland, took a boat out to Vinalhaven, and then private transfer to our very own private lighthouse (Goose Rocks) where we stayed 2 nights. Kayaked. Then we drove to Portland ME. Cute shopping, fabulous foodie town (Central Provisions is TDF), fun ferry system to surrounding islands. Next we drove to Ogunquit, Maine, did he beaches, lighthouse, walked the Marginal Way, Charming. Yummy food again, Northern Union, Brix and Brine. From there, home. In re border crossings, easy peasy into Montreal. You need passports of course. Took very little time. Same thing when we crossed at Vancouver about 3 yrs ago. No big deal. HOWEVER you want to avoid high traffic times (google for more info)

Di, I'm glad you said that about the edible images, I have some I want to use for Ashley's birthday cake and I've never used it before, now I know to be careful.

I went to Jungle Jim's last year, it is amazing, isn't it? And I love the "porta potty" bathrooms, LOL.

Thanks all, we had a good day. DD's due date is August 9th the shower is June 28th. And it's a boy!

About the edible images, the sales lady wasn't that helpful, but the man in line behind me was! He uses them all the time and gave me some hints. Get your icing as smooth as possible, then lightly mist the icing, fondant or whatever you're using with water, then apply the image. Obviously I didn't have my icing smooth but I did mist it, I was in a hurry to see if it was the look we were going for, so I was not overly careful and just slapped it on which resulted in air bubbles, and when I tried to fix them I tore the images. Not pretty but tasty! So if you're careful and take your time they should be fine. He also said you can do them days in advance, they dry and the images meld with the icing with no bleeding

Very cool Di. I'd love to go to Sugarcraft. The cake looks great. The edible images are very cool. They're a lot easier on a flat surface [like on tops] so you did good. If you're careful you can also mist the image back too and that helps. Have to work fast and carefully once you mist it but it might come in handy sometime.

Congratulations on the Grandbaby.. another little Leo.. yayy... lol.

You probably don't need the hint because it looks like this is what you did...but when you're trying to smooth the sides make sure to keep your spatula straight up and down and keep it still and move the cake around. This is when the turntables really come in handy. It's hard to get a super smooth surface on sides moving the spatula. HTH

Nice to see you and your daughter Di. What a nice trip out for the two of you! Your daughter's appearance reminds me a little of my elder DD (long brown hair) but she had her last baby 22 years ago (yikes has it been that long!). August 9th is a perfect day for a birthday (it's mine, so I know) since school friends will be on holiday and free to come to birthday parties, and you can have pool or beach parties with lots of outdoor summer birthday fun!

I have to admit that I don't know what edible images are, but I guess they are self explanatory. Cake looks delicious!

Thanks coconut, I can use all the help I can get! You are very kind-I used a butter knife on the cake in the picture lol as I said I was in a hurry and wanted to see if we liked the design. I also used chocolate chips around the edges just to see, I will pipe the icing on for the real cakes. I bought extra images, so I can practise a few more times. Hopefully I can get them smooth and presentable.

Hi Sharon, yes I think August 9th would be a good birthday! Mines in August too!

I would love to go to Sugarcraft and Jungle Jim's, they are both my kind of shopping, or would be if we had anything like that close!

Congratulations on the new son/grandson, I have two and they are great.

I think that is such a good picture of you and your daughter, you both look so happy, as well you should.
