My great-grandma's rose

I have some of my GreatGramma's rose growing in my yard. It is so pretty - I just wanted to share. *too bad you can't smell it, it's heavenly!*

I loved the way the buds were beside the big bloom, like accent diamonds on a diamond ring. LOL Anyway, enjoy.

Lovely, whiteorchid...which variety is that one?

I may do a rose or two again, and one thing for sure is it MUST have a rose fragrance. Maureen

What variety? I'm not sure, can only say it's the passed-down-from-generation-to-generation variety. LOL

It's very hearty, hard to kill, fairly resistant to buggies and disease. It's a rambler-type, does quite well on a trellis.

Hmmmm, mebbe I should post this over on the rose forum at GW and see if anyone there knows! *Now my curiosity is peaked!*

It is not 'Excelsa', nor is it even related to that class, the Wichurana Ramblers. The foliage and growth habit is entirely wrong for a Wichurana. This is a "modern climber" of some sort (and don't let anyone tell you it is 'Dr. Huey' because it isn't that either) but not one I am familiar with.

Lou, I have had one Republic of Texas for about a year now.......got it from ARE last year. It is a pretty compact plant so far. I might have snipped a couple of errant branches off recently but didn't do any pruning to speak of. Mine did bloom last year and I am, naturally, expecting a bigger show this year. I didn't find that the flowers were as bright a yellow as the picture in the ARE catalog but we'll see what happens this time around. I don't recall any problems with disease; it may have gotten a spot or two of BS but that was about it. It seems to be a good little plant to interplant with - nothing spectacular about it but a really nice supporting player. Mine is planted in front of, believe or not, a Vielchenblau rambler and they seem quite happy together!

Chloe........never knew gutta percha was used in jewelry making. Thanks for the link. I started reading up on jewelry made of it, and I found the remark that gutta percha jewelry was usually moulded and not carved (makes sense since it starts out as latex, doesn't it and would be liquid at one point). Even though the photos the OP posted are excellent, I certainly can't tell if it were carved or not. Doris........not saying your family doesn't know what they are talking about....LOL. What I am saying is I do genealogical research and even though I do not discount oral history I have found out that alls it takes is one person along the line to make presumptions and repeat them to the next generation, and it's usually accepted as absolute fact whether it is or not. Is it valuable? I dunno in a monetary sense. For one thing, it depends on the material of which it's made. Then one has to consider the antique value on it. Even bakelite plastic jewelry now is very pricey. So you may not be able to get the complete story from a jeweler. They know their gems, but may not know antiques. If you google prices on old gutta percha and jet jewelry........you can find similar items from ten dollars to hundreds of dollars. If you have numerous items like you said.........you may need to get appraisals on all of them (not just opinions from any of us, regardless of how accurate we may or may not be) and then get a rider on your insurance for the kit and caboodle of them. That's what I did.

I bought for my DS savings bonds, like his biological father's parents did for my engagement ring. DS cashed his in and I went with him to purchase have the diamond set into an engagement ring. Marriages did not work out for both, so now I have it in a pendant that I wear often. Mine is not a biggie, but I love it.

Dawn, we have a rose like that at the farm, it was a cutting from Aunt Esther's, a couple of generations ago. It grows way over my head, up to the top of the wood shed, and smells heavenly. I wonder if they are the same type (although mine won't bloom for a month or so, yet).

Ours spread like crazy too, does yours?

Yes, it spreads like wildfire. It's threatening to take over the section of yard I have it planted on. And it outgrew the trellis I had it on, and made it's way to the carport! LOL

Mine smells amazing, too. Could be the same! :)

Wow, it COULD be the same. As soon as mine (well, Dad's) blooms, I'll take a picture as close to the same angle as yours and we can compare, although I don't know what it is either, it's just "Aunt Esther's Rose".

Dawn, that is gorgeous - I love the fact that it is your great-grandma's....one of my favorite memories of my grandma is some kind of rose scented something from avon. she had a whole dresser top filled with those little sampler lipsticks and something that smelled like roses. When I smell a rose "scented" something I always think of her. :-)

Funny thing is, my grandma ate dandelion greens, and never owned a "real" washing machine. She was about as "down home" as you can get, yet I remember those silly lipsticks. I don't think she ever wore them...

Dawn - that's a lovely looking rose. It's similar in colour and shape to David Austin's Mary Rose, but Mary Rose isn't a rambler but rather a shrub rose which grows about 5 ft. tall and wide. Why don't you go over to the rose forum and ask for an ID on it, giving as much information as you can, such as it's growth and blooming characteristics. Does it bloom just once a year or is a repeat bloomer. Also mention the size of the flowers and how many leafs there are to a stem - more than 5 ? I'm sure they'll help you out over there.

Ok Dawn....I checked over there but now you have me confused. Here you say it does quite well on a trellis but over there on the rose forum you say it doesn't climb a trellis. It would be important to know the growth pattern to be able to ID the rose. The colour also looks darker in the new pics. It's very full so it looks like an older type of rose. Really lovely and I can just imagine the beautiful perfume it has. If it was from your great grandmother then I imagine that would predate David Austin's English roses, such as Mary Rose since he was born in 1926.

I'm sure someone over there will know as hopefully there are still some of the experts who were there some years ago when I hung around that forum.

I got the titles wrong over there - labeled my great aunts rose as great grandma's rose, and vice versa. *was posting tired with multiple windows open AND watching Zane!* Got the pics/growth habits right, though.

This rose does quite well on a trellis, when it has one to climb. *DSW took it off the trellis for some reason last summer and then my FIL cut it back VERY harshly, thank god it comes back fast*

I have serious rose envy! Our land is not hospitable to roses; too damp and cold in the winter. I'd love to have a spreading climber but the only way for me to grow roses is as annuals. The winters are harsh and the summers damp with Japanese beetles and deer. So alas, I have to settle for enjoying at yours.

My grandma has wonderful rose bushes; my mom too. The climate in NJ, where I grew up was ideal for them.
