Beer Can Chicken or Drunks can Cook

This is my bar night an no time to "cook".

So I put the charcoals on the sides like this... ya only half lit.

Thens we plop a well washed bird like this on the grate...

Cover it with the vents open. Ya my grill is dirty... you would be to if you sat outside for 7-8 years. Off to the beer garden... this IS the garden web right?

After drinking beer at the local bar for a couple hours I arrive home to this...

Inside the house on a plate. Peeled back some skin to show how nice and crispy it has become... ya I ate it.

Shortly after this picture was taken both legs, wings, and a thigh were eaten. Bit dry in the legs and wings but then I took no care of the bird other then washing it. Could have injected it, pinned the legs and wings, rubbed the skin with herbs. Really would have helped if I had piled the charcoal further out. Can't complain... at the moment I could easy eat the whole rest of the bird.. OINK! Not a bad meal for a $3 bird.

Nice pics! Funny too....lol, tho isn't 3 hours a bit long for the little guy? Did you actually stuff the bird with a can of beer? I've made beer can chicken before & always "stood it up" so the beer steamed the chick, I also added some hickory chips & close the vents 1/2 way so it's a smokeybeerbird :)

You certainly can do it in the oven! Probably won't burn the tips of his little legs off, either. lolol I always stuff a few bits of garlic and onion into the can and into the cavity before cooking it. Need a recipe? I swear by this one. I also have the little stands that hold a can upright. You can use apple juice if you don't want to use beer. Beer Butt Chicken 2 whole chickens, about 3 pounds each 1 T. paprika 2 tsp. chili powder 1 tsp. oregano 1 tsp. black pepper 1/4 tsp. cayenne pepper 1/2 tsp. garlic powder 1 T. packed brown sugar 2 12 oz. cans beer 1 small onion, diced 2 cloves garlic, diced Trim chickens of any fat. Rinse inside and out, pat dry. In a small bowl, combine paprika, chili powder, oregano, salt, black and cayenne peppers, garlic powder, and brown sugar, mix well. Rub about a teaspoon of the mixture on the inside of each chicken. Rub remaining mixture over the surface of the chickens. Open beers and pour off about half of the beer. Stuff the onion and garlic into the cans. Ease the chickens over the beer cans, feet down, until chickens are resting on the cans and their legs. The beer cans must remain upright at all times. Scatter a handful of soaked hickory chips over hot charcoal that has ashed over. Place chickens and beer cans on the grill over the fire. Close lid, leaving vents open. Grill for about 2 hours or until legs and wings wiggle easily, adding 6-8 briquettes to fire every 30 minutes. Obviously this is a grilling recipe, I cook at 325Âº in the oven for at least an hour, no wood chips. lol

The part that's in contact with water may be lower than boiling point, but the part that's not in contact will reach 350 to 450 degrees in an oven. How long would it take to wrap alum foil on a beer can? 5 seconds? BTW, FYI, my cutter for lobster is a stainless steel cutter, and the bacon clips are of a gunmetal finish, not paint. So-called broilers or standard size whole chickens (usually no more than a few months old) are about 4 pounds or a bit more. Something in the 6-7 pound range or more is likely rather older and as mentioned would be called a roaster or stewing chicken. Anything can be overcooked. It's true that dishes like coq au vin (coq is French for cock) originated to cook older and tougher birds long enough to be palatable. The problem with chicken (in my view) is that after spending a stewable amount of time in liquid, not only might the meat be stringy but also rather flavorless, as the flavor from the meat and bones are given up to the liquid. Nothing wrong with that, it makes the liquid tastier but it leaves the meat not so desirable. That's why with many dishes that cook for a longish period of time, like soup, some portion of the meat is taken out once cooked (or cooked separately) and returned to the dish just before serving. Or, the dish is cooked with broth and the meat is cooked and added separately.

Way to go, pqtex. Chicken soup is great for treating a cold and a great comfort food. I have chicken stock and cooked chicken in the freezer because when I got them I had to process quickly. Now that I've gotten everything caught up, I will be canning the rest of my approved soups, veggies and chicken. I'm even getting too many eggs from my chickens so will be needing room in the freezer for quiche and eggs. Donna, I love Aldis. Been shopping there for years and I'm not afraid of anything they sell. I hit good sales everywhere and as a result, my freezer is full and my shelves are filling up with things I've canned. My 40 year old dehydrator is sitting here just waiting for me to start using it and I will. Happy preserving, everyone! Madonna

Michael, have those kitties been urging you to drink beer again? They do that so you'll make chicken for them, you know.

Truthfully, that "neglected" chicken looks a heck of a lot better than anything I've ever fussed over on the grill. It looks like some beer and a little neglect on my part would improve my grilling...

Canning Camp! At best I can do a drive by. Work has gone nuts again. New product for me to make so it is a very good kind of nuts.

Sol... I don't remember seeing any chickens.

Annie... Luna who lets me know when she wants some of what I'm eating tackled me on this bird. She not only wanted some but wanted seconds and thirds. Now that you mention it I do suspect some sort of manipulation. Like when Yoko wanted a new tractor...

As for "grilling" birds this way it really is that easy and that is what tempted me to post these pictures. While this was a very minimal effort the results were very good. The legs and wings got to be jerky like but then turkey jerky sells for $13.99 a pound and this was every bit as edible and tasty. I have to tease Jessy by pointing out that the breast and thigh was most tender and succulent. Sticking a beer can in the cavity and standing the bird up works excellent but on the grate works. On the grate is the only way with large birds like a turkey.

Hickory chips or other smoking woods can be put on the charcoal to give a stronger smoke flavor. Injecting the bird with cajun or italian spice works very well with this style of cooking. Meat from a bird like this will retain a smoke flavor and pass that on to any dish that it is added to. Family next door likes to take a bird like this and pull all the meat off the bones and mix it together. That way everyone gets both light and dark meat. This style of cooking makes it very easy to seperate the skin, fat, and bones from the meat for feeding kids or making sandwichs & salads. Very little waste because it all becomes lean and tasty. Economical because whole birds are the cheapest to buy.

Okay... nuff about chicken. Past my bedtime.

See, I knew it was the kitties! LOL Luna sounds like she's pretty much taken over and settled in nicely.

I do hope you make it to Canning Camp, at least for a meal or a drink, you work too hard.

Oh, and nice tractor!! I won't bait Sol by starting with the Country music again. (grin)

That's after a few beers? I'd never have remembered it was even on the grill, Michael, until the fire dept came to tell me! That is a great looking bird, cooked to perfection!
