Bubbe's Second Seder

Hi,

We a wonderful Second Seder. The kids and Grandkids got into it and planned an hasty reenactment of the Exodus about 1/2 hour before we all sat down. I had planted the thought in their heads earlier in the day and here is a bit of the goings on.

Oh my gosh! Renee, how wonderful these pictures are! I feel like I was there in person - I'm laughing and getting teary eyed at the same time - those grandchildren are just beautiful, can I borrow your beautiful little girls and Solomon some afternoon when I need a lift? :-)

Shank Bone Quandry

May, I know a few families that will freeze their shank bones to use for next year. I don't do it, because it just doesn't appeal to me. When we lived in South Florida, it was very easy to find the shank bone every Passover in our local Publix. Since moving to Central Florida, I can't always find it. So, I've done what Sue and Jessy do twice already, and it sure was convenient. I can't STAND the smell of the shankbone when it's roasting, so that's another reason to just use a handy chicken leg bone:-) If I find the lamb shank bone, fine, if not, I fall back on the chicken leg. I have wondered too how many years in a row would you be able to use the bone from the freezer???? DONNA

Oh! Westsider's must be the quickie way. I've never done them in a covered pot. It's great that the butcher is putting all those parts together for you, agmss, so you don't have to break down the chickens yourself to get them and still make the best use of your sister's chickens. Since she's giving you fat, here's what I do to render it: Rendering chicken fat Put the lumps of fat in a little pan with a small onion or half a large onion, cut into large pieces. Don't put in too much onion or it'll soak up all the fat. Never turn your back on it while it's on the heat. Start on a medium high heat until the fat starts to melt. Turn it down a bit so it won't spatter Once all the fat is melted, turn it off and let it cool just a little.. Pick out the onion and any other solids with a fork, or use a strainer. Put a spoon in a clean glass jar (sterile if you're not going to use it all up right away). The spoon keeps the jar from breaking. Pour in the fat, carefully. (Remove the spoon.) Cover and chill. Keep in the refrigerator. When the fat solidifies the onion juice will separate out of it, on the bottom, as you'll see through the jar. The fat will be yellow from the onion, as well. Once it's solid, chicken fat can be frozen in an airtight package. Don't put a glass jar in the freezer. ------------ So, in my house, he who wants to eat chopped chicken liver gets to make chopped chicken liver. :) I checked. It's the sinew that makes it bitter, but it's easy to remove. Here's a great little how to de-sinew chicken livers video. Also make sure to remove any bits that aren't the right color. :) LPink, I don't judge! If the mix suits you, why not? Some mixes are very good.

Breville Smart Oven is terrific! We have the Compact Smart Oven (it's smaller, doesn't have convection), so it's not as useful as a back-up or second oven, but certainly quite useful for its size. We love it! I was very reluctant to spend the $ on it initially. When the timer knob (?) broke on our second or third replacement Delonghi toaster oven, I looked at every toaster oven out there. Many seemed flimsy (and poorly made), and/or looked too chintzy to leave out on the counter, so I bit the bullet and got the Breville (@BB&B with my coupon!). No regrets (though it would be nice at times to have the larger one). My parents got one, too when their toaster oven died, because they knew how well-made ours is. Bubbe, that looks like a wonderful seder, and possibly the best re-enactment of the exodus ever.

I loved Moses and Miriam and the burning bush, but how in the world did they ever get Solomon to stay in that basket?

You set a beautiful table too, I love the flowers and the blue linens.

It was as perfect a seder as I can remember. I wanted everyone, regardless of age, to feel involved and they sure were.

Carol, The kids are real cuties; each very different looking and acting. They live a couple of hours apart so these gatherings are infrequent.

Everyone was engaged in the goings on, even the baby; Solomon was so eager to be part of it all and was taking it all in; intently looking from one face to the other trying to comprehend what was happening and his role in it. He is quite a happy baby, he seldom fusses over anything.
Thank you for complimenting my table. I bought those linens several years ago at Pier 1, and because they are organza and very sheer, I bought a bolt of white felt to make liners so the table wouldn't show through.

I just added a couple of photos at the end; one of Daniel and his birthday cake (that was his actual birthday), and one of the girls with older cousin Jason.

I'll probably put some First Seder photos up too.

It looks like a wonderful seder. There isn't anything quite like families getting together, is there? The table is beautiful. I love the Exodus play -- my favorites are the burning bush and Moses! :)

I had to go back and check out those last pictures, Bubbe. I especially liked the last one with the cousins, and Jason has the "happiest" eyes in that picture.

The pictures are all wonderful, and the look on little Solomon enjoying his first brisket, too cute for words. I also liked the last picture with the cousins sitting together. And I swear that little girl on the left looks like a pint-size RenÃ©e.

But LOL, only Solomon is my biological grandchild. But then, some say that Arthur and I look related, so there you have it. I'm thrilled by all the comments liking these grands to me. As a matter of fact, little Gabrielle is a lot like me in personality; impetuous, gregarious, outspoken, eager...but I'm a grown up, right? Right? RIGHT? Oh, and such an Aries. LOL

I've been three times now to visit your lovely photos RenÃ©e. So good to see such an extensive and loving family. Reminds me a lot of my family in Canada when some of the younger generation were that age. We still get together for special celebrations but now most of the little ones are in college or out working. I still have two young grands age 8 and 10 though. And yes, I would have also said that little Gabrielle looks very much like you.
Look forward to your posting some more family pics. How are the twins doing now ? I'd love to see their latest photos as well.
