a puppy has arrived

No name yet! DSS a friend and co-worker brought her to me this morning. She has fleas so a bath was in order first thing and when she is dry we will go get medicine.

Just a quick update. We've been to the vet. He did an Xray to confirm heart problems and said that Ginger is Stage 3. According to the vet, this is not too late for medication to give her a good quality of life, although it certainly can't cure the problem. He put her on three medications. One to strengthen her heart. One to lower her blood pressure. One which is a diuretic and she is taking a fairly high dose for several days, and if her coughing goes away he will slowly reduce the amount until it seems right. The medication caused diarrhea the first night. She is still having the spells where her legs give out and they are worse than they were at the beginning. We haven't even taken her outdoors lately. I put puppy pads by her bed, and sometimes just the effort of climbing out of the bed to use the pad will bring on a spell. The vet seems to think that will improve. I hope so because it scares her when it happens. It scares us too, but it's her we're worried about, not us. We hate to see her frightened like this. We are holding on to hope for a little bit, but we won't put her through this indefinitely. Only a little while, as the vet seems to think there is hope and says today's meds are really good. He did say that her tongue is nice and pink and that is a good sign, compared to when the tongue turns bluish for lack of oxygen. Of course, he also reminded us that at 15 1/2 years of age, she is quite elderly and medicine is not expected to keep her feeling good (even if it gets her that way at all) indefinitely. My heart breaks for her. I will let you know how she is doing again later on.

Thank you guys! I love it too...Austin hates to get his pictures taken and usually melts down. He occassionally has a good moment! I was sure this couldn't happen! We got a few good ones from the last photo session too....more bad than good, but happy to have a few good ones!

One of my dogs also doesn't like to have her feet handled. When we first got her it would take two of us to clip her nails, one person to hold her down and the other to clip. However, she has never bit anyone for trying - I might touch base with the breeder on that and see if there were some negative experiences or if they have dealt with this issue before. It seems like quite the reaction for a pup that young to me... What I've done with Chaos, who loves to have her belly rubbed, is to pet her and rub her belly, and while doing this also touch her feet. Only for a short moment and don't make a big deal of it, just keep repeating it. Ideally you want to do this when you and the dog are both tired and relaxed, for us a good time was in the evening, when we were sitting in front of the TV after a full day. Once you have done this for a while, get a bowl of treats and take the puppy's foot, give him the treat, and let go of the foot. The idea is to get him to equate foot touching with yummy treats and think "take my paw again, I want a treat!". Then we graduated to doing the paw & treat thing while I'm holding the nail clippers. Eventually, when Chaos was all relaxed about the clippers being there (which originally made her nervous and jumpy) I would clip one nail, and keep doing the hold paw & treat routine as if never happened. The key for us was not to force the issue. If I insisted on holding her foot until she gave in or until I clipped all of her nails in one session at first, it would only get worse. Trust me, I tried it (cause some people said I have to show her who's the boss). It's like buying a house - you want both the buyer and seller to think that they got a good deal. Now we don't have to hold Chaos down to clip her nails. I do it myself by asking her to lie on her side at the top of the stairs or on the couch (because it's less bending and easier on my back). First I clip each of her nails, giving her a treat every other nail or so (I just use regular dry dog food for this). Then I go back with a Dremel and grind the edges of her nails smooth. When I'm finished she looks around like "what, are we done already?" and that is exactly the reaction I want her to have. This has gotten a little long, sorry about that. I just wanted to add one more thing that we used to get Chaos used to foot handling. We taught her to shake a paw, with each paw (depending on which hand I hold out) and to give a high five. This really helped to get her over the initial foot touching aversion (with lots of treats, of course).

Dolly Dog seems to be the current working name. We passed the first night. She is figuring the house training bit out real fast and barked at me to let her out in the night. I've not had a dog in awhile so I figuring it out again.

DSS's dog had a litter of puppies. She was my dinner friend at work that moved to day shift. Her daughter still sits and eats with me every day. Rumor mill at work has us practically married... just friends and probably stay that way because we have to work at the same place. So Dolly Dog came to me in a little blue sedan driven by DSS and her daughter. They were going shopping and we had arranged that she would just drop the puppy off to me.

Even Luna needed a little extra help adjusting to the loss of chair space. Suppose I can buy a new computer chair again and give the old one to the animals.... we already have two. The couch is not close enough... they want right next to the human.

I can see right now that she loves you!!...And that's very important!
Got snow, eh?? LOL! Likely preferable to the 16 degree temps here without benefit of snow cover.
So this makes....what? 2 cars and a dog? That all?!!! No current bunnies?
