Hubbies TV Stand

So this is my husbands first attempt at "furniture".

He had to build it strong enough to hold his GIANT TV and wide enough as well..and then it had to fit in the corner perfectly.

It also hold our Stereo Equipment.

He's not pleased with the doors..He says they are the prototype. LOL

I've pointed out to him the he needs to put a back on it, so that we don's see all those DAMMED cords. He hadn't even thought about that.

So now my house reeks of stain..lol..and he doesn't think the dog bed should be touching his masterpiece! ...

and I see a hand print or two on HIS screen..better tell him it needs to be cleaned..rofl...

Next project..smaller version, no doors for the boys room tv....and then a coffee table/ottoman type thing..

Nice work Terri's DH! You can get cord controllers/organizers from online places, can't remember what they are called.

It would work. And it might be exactly what you are looking for, once you make the modifications you have in mind. But I am not handy and don't ever want to make modifications, unless they only require new knobs, pulls, or maybe a different fabric on a chair seat. Try using "buffet" or "sideboard" or "credenza" as your CL search term and see if you can find something you wouldn't even have to modify. Red

No plasma here yet, but I do use a vintage oak buffet for our TV stand. Here's a photo from today...the kitty was having a cozy nap. Sigh...what is it about photos that make all the 'stuff' show up more??? Gotta figure out what to do with some of that 'stuff' on the floor...except for the big fossil. That's too cool....or maybe it needs a table to go on. Anyway, the buffet works for us...hides lots of components.

I moved the DVD player to the bottom shelf which is really too short to hold anything else. Then I moved the baskets to the center. That should be enough to allow you to hide the cords. Of course, I just spent $115 on the chair and I don't know how much on the monstera, but I suppose it's still cheaper than a new media cabinet. I decided against art on the wall.

Of the two, suggest a console under the TV. Hard to suggest a style, but your room feels earthy/modern. The art can stand on its own, but if you want to add something, keep it low so you don’t have to raise the art. A bench is a good choice, with a slightly modern feel to complement the art.

You could hang a towel on the back side of that shelf to hide the cords.......hee hee hee

Hmmmm, funny how he's good at his own projects, LOL.

Still, he did a pretty nice job, he should be proud of his handiwork. Especially since so much of today's commercially available furniture is so junky.

As a professional furniture designer, I had to laugh when I saw the picture that you described with "furniture" in quotes. You have to start somewhere, however. Did he have his plans on paper before he began? The TV looks a bit high, but then I've had a TV fall over in a quake, and so that position is a bit scary for me. If the cabinet is on casters, there is less of a chance of falling over in a quake. I remember a good sized quake in Washington state back in the February 2001.

My father built furniture when he was young, as did his father and my mother's grandfather (in Alsace). I guess I have furniture in my blood (among other things).

You might want to consider going to a store that sells molding to add a bit of decoration to the front. I've built very little furniture myself, and most of that was very utilitarian - like the stand for my scanner, which covers my computer and has a shelf for paper. I have a very tight space that I had to fit that into, but it's very functional. I might build a shelf to go beside my stove in the kitchen.

I was going to build a stand for my widescreen TV, but I went to the unfinished furniture store in Culver City and found one that matched my dimensions to a fraction of an inch. I bought a three-drawer cabinet for the surround sound system to go beside the TV and hold DVDs in the drawers, and this I also found at the same store exactly to my specifications. All I had to do was stain the furniture, and then I put a beeswax finish on it, which is easy to maintain and repair. The TV delivery people were very impressed with the stand I had for the TV. They couldn't believe it fit so perfectly, but I got lucky.

A lot of commercial furniture is terrible, but the furniture at the unfinished store is all solid wood and not badly made, with some exceptions.

Lars, I agree on the height..but he assures me that it's "eye level"...for him maybe..LOL It is on little legs with felt on the bottom, so that it can slide easily out of the corner for me to clean behind it. (nice touch huh?) LOL

I suggested trim, and had several pieces already stained to match, leftover from my kitchen remodel..but he wasn't so sure, so put this tiny "trim" around the electronic shelves.

The TV weighs a zillion pounds..okay as much as a small grown man! LOL (160 or so)
I didn't even think about quake problems..It's been about 7 years since the last roll..which was really just a 5 second ripple.

Lastnight I was telling hubby your comments..he'd not thought of earthquake concerns..(we are lulled into a false sense of security here?) but now his hamster wheel might be turning..

Anyway..he leaned back on the couch in his "spot" head all the way back and said.."yep it's perfect." I said what's perfect.."the height of the tv"...

My TV is very specific regarding height and angle - it's an old HDTV (2002), and it has a narrow viewing angle. The top of my screen is at 58" and the bottom at 34" high - which gives us the correct height when viewed from the sofa. We are planning to get a new sofa soon. In fact, we need to leave right now to find one!
