View from the Malahat

Driving through the Malahat Mountain last week, on my way home from Victoria, I stopped at one of the lookout points. This is the view looking towards the Saanich Penisula. The big peak in the distance is

Thanks for the suggestions! We have Oleanders to hide the houses on the sides (very residential neighborhood). We are trying to shake things up with something different (also, I am not a big fan of Oleander with no flowers during winter time). But it's definitely a great option to keep in mind, thank you! The palm you are referring to requires a lot of maintenance, it needs to be professionally trimmed once every two years, and sprayed against the Red Palm Weevil (some kind of beetle that came from Asia to Europe and eats and kills that breed of palm trees) every 6 to 8 weeks. Treatment cost roughly 10 to 20€ per tree and the grooming can be very pricy (last year we paid about 500€ for the big one you see in the pic and 4 small ones). Also, once it grows, the only way to control its growth is to remove it. We are keeping this one and going to keep 2-3 of the ones we have but we are actually in the process of removing some.

We have an architect designing it. We're juggling a weird lot... To the south are traffic lights (it's right at an intersection) and a busy road, the city is making us build an average of twenty feet away from any 30% grade (restricting view and how big it footprint is, also the footprint goes further north as you go west.. We basically get one room that sticks out for view on that north west side), and entry has to be from the east. To the west is partially a view of the road, but also partially a view of the city. We are also going for net zero and budget is limited, so we are trying to be efficient with the space. We also asked for an open great room, so that factors into how rooms are laid out as well. Isn't the second option L shaped?

Oh yes I've driven that road many hundreds of times and it's always beautiful.

I love the Saanich Peninsula, but I've only been through Malahat a few times, going between Parksville and Victoria. I've lost touch with my friend in Parksville, and I'm a bit worried about him. The Christmas card I sent him was returned as unknown.

Great place for having a yacht! I loved sailing through the Straits of Georgia.

Ann, we briefly talked of Vancouver Island last night and those who are there, and those who might move there. Uh, can you guess that we were ready to 'get in the car' as dh says!?!!?? More likely that car would start after a flight to Seattle. Maureen
