Maria, I love my swap box. It is just perfect.

Maria sent me a few of her favourite things. Making everything even more special.

Pottery

The little batter bowl is so cute I actually think it would make a nice little gravy bowl with its nice wide spout. The rim is engraved with a Estonian Proverb "An Empty Belly is the Best Cook"

The Potter's name is Elizabeth Mostello-Harris from Goddess Earthworks.

Textiles.

I love almost anything Mexican and the Zapotec Woven Coasters are perfect. Love the patterns and the rich colours.

Maria's Choice

A jar of Stonewall Kitchen's Bellini Jam. A peach Jam flavoured with Champagne. Moe is really looking forward to trying this on his toast tomorrow. Or maybe I'll make him some biscuits or scones to have with the jam. I know once he tastes it it won't last long. A cute little stainless steel spreader accompanied the jam.

And Maria also included a sweet little key chain Crocheted to look like a cake. How cute is that.

And a lovely card and note. The card was painted by one of Maria's friends.

What a lovely swap package. Really like the pottery bowl. The coasters are lovely, and would also be nice on the patio. The jam looks wonderful, you'll have to let us know how it tastes. Cute little keychain. Maria your friend is very gifted, as the card is beautiful. You did a great job Maria! I know Ann will treasure it all.

I think 2 weeks is appropriate.I send mine out sooner usually,unless it is a casual trade with a friend,than it doesnt usually matter to us,but we both are in agreement. I am misunderstanding what you are saying also,has it been 6 weeks since you made trade arrangements? If so that is excessive and I would start to wonder if something did happen to the person that was supposed to send. I would send another email and inquire if everything is ok and if the person did receive your seeds. Do a search of the site and be sure there are no new posts by this person,if you do find new posts than I would send an email asking where the heck my seeds are...well not like that,much nicer of course...lol..

Which Blooms Did You Most Anxiously Wait to See??

Most of my roses came last year as bands, and not all of them bloomed their first season. Most of the once-bloomers threw a couple before they went into grow-only mode, and I got to see most of the repeat-bloomers at least once. So for this year, I'd have to say that the blooms I "most anxiously wait(ed) to see" would be on those roses I didn't get to "meet" in bloom last year. Thus far, the following have been satisfied: 'Blanc de Vibert' 'DLFED 3' 'Duchesse d'Angouleme (aka 'Wax Rose') "Grandmother's Hat" 'Mme de Sevigne' 'Paul Neyron' 'Reine des Violettes' 'Rose du Roi -- original' "Sombreuil" (the climber) 'Tuscany Superb' 'Yolande d'Aragon' But there are still a few more from last year I have yet to "meet" -- but it should happen soon: 'Baltimore Belle' 'Bleu Magenta' 'Ferdinand Pichard' 'Indigo' 'Orfeo' 'R. fedtschenkoana' And then a few came this year as well. Of those, I got to "meet" 'Crimson Glory' because it had an open flower (and an unopened bud) right in the box. Its reputation for fragrance is certainly well-founded. The others I'm still waiting to "meet" are: 'Big Ben' 'Carolyn Supinger' 'Happy Child' 'Heart's Desire' 'Mister Lincoln' 'Red Masterpiece' 'Velvet Fragrance' 'Vineyard Song' All this aside, thinking back to Winter, I'd have to say the short list of those I was most looking forward to seeing was: 'Nouveau Monde' -- I imagined it full of small, fragrant, pink blooms all across the railing of the back deck, and that's what it's doing now 'Souvenir de Victor Landeau' -- the full flush on all its self-pegged canes was awesome 'Orfeo' -- I can't wait to see red roses going up the hacked Callery pear, and while I don't think it will have a "flush" this year, I do see a few buds on it now 'Georg Arends' -- it's about to bloom now, and the blooms are such a beautiful, clear, solid pink, the scent so distinctive and strong, and the form like a big cabbage HP with rolled-back corners on the petals like a Tea And any of my pot-pet red HTs. Though to be fair, being a new gardener who endured a horrible Winter, I was elated at the first green leaves of Spring. :-) ~Christopher

Carol, That Cluster Goliath looks amazing. It makes me tempted to go to Totally Tomatoes and order the whole Goliath line. It's been 6 or 7 years since I've grown a lot of Goliaths (one row of them will give you all the tomatoes you need). I grew regular Goliath and Bush Goliath as early tomatoes this spring, but gave them away to a friend when I ran out of space for them. I gave them to our friends still in 5-gallon pots (they needed to be potted up or transplanted and all my larger pots were full and so was my garden) and covered with fruit and they were harvesting tomatoes a couple of weeks later. They harvested the first one before it broke color (lol) because they were so excited to have fruit. They have sandy soil with nematodes and had just about given up on growing tomatoes so I may have 'converted' them into container growers with those Goliaths. You tomato addicts (OK, we tomato addicts) are now becoming addicted to peppers. One fun thing we could do next year for the swap is that everyone could pick a favorite variety or two to grow in quantity for the swap. Then everyone could bring 'their' chosen variety or varieties to the swap and trade with everyone else. Of course, everyone could bring other extra peppers too, but we'd know Carol was growing Variety A, and Lynn was growing Variety B, and so forth. Someone would have to be the Pepper Coordinator and keep a list of who was bringing what, but wouldn't it be fun? On another note, like tomatoes, peppers are perennial. I have a couple of plants that are now in their third year because I overwinter them in containers in the garage. We went down to about 6 degrees on a couple of nights, but I know the garage stayed somewhat warmer...maybe it briefly went down to 15 or 20 degees on those 6 degrees nights. Anyway, the Red Sweet Bell Pepper I overwintered from last year starting blooming in Jan. or Feb. and set a couple of early bell peppers that I harvested in April. Then it set more in March or April. Those peppers are now a gorgeous red and ready to pick. This is despite the fact that the overwintered plant lost its leaves and some tips of some branches froze several times on cold nights although it never completely froze and died. This fall, when pepper production drops, I'm going to dig up and pot a few and try overwintering them again in an effort to get an earlier pepper harvest. It works with hots, sweets and ornamentals....the ornamentals were the first ones I ever overwintered. Finally, if y'all want 'pepper trees' to go along with my tomato trees, you'd need to start them in January for a late April swap. They grow a lot slower than tomato plants. Carol, I've held peppers in cups forever some years waiting for the weather to warm up and they always take off just fine when they're finally in the ground even if they were root-bound in the pots. This year a lot of my peppers (both sweets and hots) had flowers and tiny fruit when I set them out into the garden, and I'm harvesting those peppers this week. It seems like this year the peppers grew faster than usual once I got them into the ground. It likely can be attributed to the July-like temperatures that arrived in southern OK in the last half of May. I'll be canning something.....likely hot peppers and plums (not together!) tomorrow, and maybe salsa by the end of the week. When the harvest starts rolling in, it sure gets busy around here. Dawn

I am not at all surprised that Nancy packed such a perfect gift box, she has a knack of know what people would like. I love that batter bowl, I know that Nancy has access to local craftsmen and artists, so I'm not surprised she found such a beautiful gift. No one can have too many cookbooks, of course, and I've never had a bad product from American Spoon Food. I've got to admit, though, the maple cream is my absolute favorite on a warm scone for breakfast. Karen, I just know that you are enjoying every bit of that package. Nancy, you did a great job. Annie

The Estonian saying bowl is charming. Ann, I know you'll be able to enjoy the coasters during your next Mexican meal. The Stonewall Kitchen products are very good. I have some of their mustards.

I love those coasters!! I got some of those in Teotitlan Del Valle the last time I was in Oaxaca (2002)! I also love the Estonian pottery, which to me is more exotic than Oaxaca. I would frame the card - it is so beautiful!!

Mmmm, I'm going to try that jam. They carry Stonewall in some stores near me and that looks very tempting. How cute is that batter bowl?? Where the heck did you find it Maria? I especially love the little crocheted key chain. Things like that amaze me because I am all thumbs.

Coasters-- wow-- how clever to use those as the "fabic"-- you'll feel you're right in Mexico with those added to your meal, Ann.

I just love, love that bowl & really like the looks of that spreader-- jam sounds yummy .

That little batter bowl is very unique, I've never seen anything quite like that and the card is just beautiful.

Bellini jam? What a great idea, my mother would love that I think. I feel an experiment coming on.....
