Today I received a marvelous swap package from Shelley (ssomerville) in Langley, BC, Canada. And everything survived the long trip in good shape!

I was able to get a couple of pictures before my Digikam software started acting up.

First I have to say that I loved the wrapping paper - soft yellow with bees/bugs(?) printed on it - and the lovely card that Shelley sent. This gal likes her tape! Everything securely taped up and make you work to open her package!

We have some "sets" - the first being a complete boxed kit for Pizza 101:

pizza stone with rack, pizza cutter, rolling pin (good and heavy), pizza server, cheese grater (don't have this one), dried oregano, crushed red pepper flakes, two large oven mits (these will be used a lot), and wooden sauce ladle.

[I swear on a stack of cookbooks all this came in one box!]

The next two packages were a beautiful hand decorated black pepper grinder and a jar of Brandied Peppercorn Melange. Shelley said she "personalized" the grinder and I think she made the peppercorn mixture also as she included the recipe. It smells divine!

And last, but by no means least, is a Digital Instant Read Thermometer with a LARGE EASY TO READ DISPLAY! This is something I have been wanting very, very much (but wouldn't just go out and get for myself).

There was a copy of a Special Issue of Canadian Living magazine also in my package titled Holiday Celebrations. Can't wait to look through this tonight.

Shelley, this generous swap package is just perfect for me. I'll be trying out the pizza kit this weekend, I hope. The grinder and pepper will be put into use tomorrow. I can see my sons doing the peppergrinder routine like the waiters when we have our family Thanksgiving dinner. And the thermometer will be sooooo much easier to use than my non-digital ones.

Thank you, Shelley, for this delightful swap package. I'll think of you often when I enjoy all my goodies!

That was quite a pizza package. You are all set for Friday pizza night. (We do that every Friday and have for years!) And love that beautiful pepper mill. That is something to leave on the table or counter all the time. I know what you mean about "LARGE EASY TO READ DISPLAY". I need that now myself. Nice package Shelley.

Growing up in CT, I enjoyed picking wineberries, which my brother and I called "red blackberries" (not sure why...maybe my grandmother called them that?). Last spring when I finally got a house with a yard, I saw (lots of) them again and finally discovered their real name. While productive, I don't think that they beat cultivated red raspberries in productivity or flavor and they are definitely smaller. The Autumn Britten I put in were much tastier. But both me and my kids stripped the wineberries as soon as they turned red (around July 1st last year), anxiously waiting for the rest to ripen. They do have a bit of residue though which leaves your hands greasy/sticky. The wineberries also have some truly nasty thorns. Late in the summer I dug up half a dozen for my brother's yard ("that'll keep those neighborhood kids from cutting across my lawn..."). He may have more than he bargains for soon though, as they spread like crazy. I'm finding them everywhere in my yard, and I have a hard time bringing myself to destroy berry bushes...

You just compaired peatmoss to pudding stating:" is it going to increase aeration? - NO, drainage" The fact is that promix bx has less air porosity then hp because hp has more perlite. This shows adding perlite increases air porosity in peatmoss. This is a statment you made:"is it going to increase aeration? - NO, drainage" So then hp has no more drainage then bx? It has a little? Peatmoss is not as good as bark but does that to say we now should treat it like pudding? The partical size of peatmoss is quite large. The fact is you said adding perlite will not increase air but it does, just not as dramatically as when you add it to pine fines... I understand why you compaired peat to pudding and I know you used it as a exaggeration. I know you are trying to make a point about why peat really is not the same as bark. I do understand using little or no fine particals in a mix is ideal. I understand peat just fills in around perlite, where bark creats the macro pours like you said. It just seemed like you said adding perlite to peat does nothing when it does because I worked with both HP and BX before, thats all. Does HP have Higher Porosity because it has more dry spots when wet from the perlite? That really is it I would think.

Greetings from Vancouver. I'm having a terrific time, with special thanks to you all and your great tips. I've been walking all over this town, plus taking the bus too. It's wonderful. I visited VanDuesen, Chintz, Granville Island (and South Granville), plus Chinatown and most of the downtown-area neighborhoods. It's great. Tomorrow is the Art Museum and Queen Elizabeth park, oh, and Beach Drive too (thanks for that tip!). I haven't done my homework, so if anyone can help me cheat that would be great. Can I bring any plants/cuttings/seeds back to Seattle with me?? What about fruit? what a great package! I love my pizza stone! well seasoned! I use it for all kinds of things, including pizza. I almost included an instant thermometer in the swap package that I sent, too!

Yes! Shelley painted the decoration on the grinder! I just this morning found her signature on the edge. This makes it even more special! Beautiful, Shelley!

What a beautiful and personalized swap package Teresa! We have Sunday Night pizza, so I would always use that great pizza kit. The peppermill is a work of art, and you'll think of Shelley's amazing talent every time you use it. I'd keep it handy, because everyone's going to want a twist of that delicious sounding pepper blend.

Teresa, I'm in the market for a new instant read thermometer (DS got a hold of my old one for a science experiment:-( so let me know how this one works for you.

Shelley, you put together a wonderful swap package, one that Teresa will clearly enjoy. Good job!

The pizza package is fabulous....just fabulous!

The pepper grinder is wonderful and such a graceful design too. It will look so pretty sitting on your counter!!

Theresa, I am so glad it got there in one piece, and glad you like it all. Sorry about the tape, lol, I do tend to get carried away. My mom hates getting packages from me and my sister as she says we must go through a pack of tape per package, lol. Hope you enjoy the pepper mix, it has become a reall favourite around here. My son puts it on everything.

Looks like you started a pizza craving. I'll be calling the local pizza joint for dinner tonight.

Nothing beats a stone for cooking on. Love it.

Shelley, that peppermill is very impressive. Useful and pretty at the same time.

That peppermill IS impressive and I'd like the "recipe" for the brandied peppercorns, I use pepper on everything since I started cutting back on the butter, LOL.

Elery gave me an instant read thermometer that I use for making yogurt, but it sure isn't "large and easy to read" at all. Bigger IS better in this instance. :-)

Pizza night? Ashley would think she'd died and gone to heaven, what a great package.

what a fantastic package. i was on the receiving end of shelley's generosity last swap and she painted me a beautiful tray that sees so much use. what takent.

i love the pizza kit - what a wonderful idea to put everything together that you need and the pepper mill and pepper - that's excellent as well.

i've now added that thermometer to my (never ending) list.

Love the pizza kit. Reminds me of my pie kit. But a hand decorated pepper grinder. How cool. That is a great package.

Shelley, you painted the grinder? It's absolutely stunning! Can you tell us about the pepper mix? My husband is a big fan of spices.

The pizza kit is great! I especially love the sturdy rolling pin, my favorite kind. And an EZ read thermometer? sigh. It might be time...

Wonderful job! And my swap sister Diana55/Sophia Loren sent me that issue of Canadian living...I haven't been able to bring it home yet because everyone at work has been pawing at it! Lots of great stuff in there. Enjoy!

That is one amazing magazine! This issue, Holiday Celebrations, has a gingerbread type wreath on the cover and is chock full of recipes for appetizers, cookies, breads, main dishes, salads, spreads, and lots more. Some of the cookies are really unique! And hardly any ads!

What a wonderful package! I love the Pizza Kit -- Pizza Night sounds like such a great tradition. And the pepper grinder is truly beautiful -- makes me wish I liked pepper. Great job, Shelly; enjoy, Teresa! (And if you feel like it, share the brandied pepper melange recipe!)

Wonderful package! I love all the tools and the wooden spoon associated with the pizza package.

I have a small instant read thermometer which I love, and I'm sure you'll put to good use.
