WANTED: Curiosity was killing my post office gal !

I missed the mailman yesterday so had to run today to our little local post office to pick up & sign for a package--new gal behind the counter

was real curious about a pkg from Canada containing homemade pickles so I had to explain about our Cooking Forum & the swaps &

members from Canada, Iceland, Australia, Germany , Japan & all over the States -- she thought the whole concept was so great. ( & no Sharon didn't cheat-- just sent a gift for the family)

Oh Goodness ,Sharon--- !! I love everything--it's all perfect ; beautiful, unique and useful-- and just my style,

every single piece I would have agonized over getting for myself if I had seen them someplace-- they certainly speak to me! And so nice to get local artisan's work.

(Doc's at Deer Camp with my camera -- I won't be able to take pictures until Sat evening & would really like the forum to see these beautiful items. So I emailed Sharon & she came through with hers)

I absolutely love the shape & texture of the wooden bowl-- & signed and dated by the Craftsman (Kenneth H Jones ) -- 15 x 8 & 3 inches deep, hand distressed with a small metal insert in one end, feels very good in the hands too-- I just love the feel of well worked wood-- it's beautiful enough to use as a display piece tho I think it will be filled with the cranberry/walnut rugelach I'm taking to DD's Thanksgiving Dinner-- first of many times it will be used I'm sure.

And the gravy pitcher & it's drip saucer-- a stoneware pottery piece by Donn Zver--dark browns fading thru green in the unique glaze treatment-- and check out the curly bit on the handle-- the spout looks like a "drip-less " one. You're right about it being the perfect size for my brood-- & timely--- for our family Christmas this year I'm planning to do a boneless Prime Rib & introducing the family to Yorkshire Puddings-- and won't that pitcher be perfect-- and being stoneware will keep the gravy well warmed.Wish my camera was here so you could see how well it looks with my good stoneware ( which is a gray/green speckle & flower pattern).

The place mats & napkins are very nice-- a bit "rustic" like me but the trim gives them some style -- needed here.

PS-- Sharon's pickles are going to DD's for our Thanksgiving Dinner . So when we go around the table & each of us mentions what we're thankful for she'll be included in a family's " thank goodness for friends" . The chili sauce I'm not sharing-- well maybe Doc can have a little.

I never ship USPS...they are unreliable, and take too long. I use DHL or FedEX....DHL is cheaper and faster. For $4-5, their ground service is a MAXIMUM of 3 days (except at Christmas, when it can stretch to 4). Their tracking system is the best, and they have real, human customer service people who will find the location of a package that has not been delivered and even refund charges if a package isn't delivered in time...things the USPS does not do. Try calling the USPS with a problem...and the best you get, if they answer the phone, is a bored voice telling you 'I dunno, nothing I can do". It costs nothing to open an account with FedEx or DHL, and you get free pre-printed waybills. The USPS, IMO, is the worst shipper.

I had this top hanging on the door to my office for a long time before I quilted it. I miss it. I live in a military area, and I am a Navy Brat - my Dad is retired Navy, so I really feel honored and proud to had worked on this special quilt. Sharon is right, you can't help but feel a sense of pride in your heart - I think it is the simplicity of the Yellow Ribbon and what it has come to mean. Thanks for your nice comments.

I guess in a way it does sound archaic but only since it's been around so long. Guess it's been around since firearms were invented. But things that used to be done even though archaic, aren't all bad. Scratch cooking, repairing things rather than run to the store, walk to the neighbor's place and more are all, technically archaic, but still good ideas. I think firing squads are a good idea too. And yes, there's some old ideas that are not good too! I've never heard of only using one live round in a firing squad! That's not going to work. The theory of the one blank is valid for some people to have the doubt. I haven't really found any credible source to say for sure whether it is true or not. While a blank will have less recoil, I'm skeptical that many people could really tell for sure in a firing squad situation. When you're used to a certain gun, caliber and the like you get used to the recoil. But a different caliber, different firearm and such will have different recoil. The use of non-use of a kickpad will make a difference too. It's not a situation where you're used to taking the old twice-barrel shootgun off the mantle and go hunt us up some squirrel for supper. I highly doubt you provide your own firearm so it'll be strange to the person. Even different powder loads in the same type of shell and bullet will give different recoil. Plus being at closer range it's highly likely the loads will be different than for hunting deer for instance. Interesting question though. I think I'll do some research and see what I can find. I think some of these slimeballs should be used for veterinary experiments. Let them serve a purpose. And of course Joe Arpaio is not in the Federal prison system, never suggested he was. He's Maricopa County's Sheriff. However he doesn't actually save the money represented by many. The cost of defending lawsuits alone outweighs the planned savings. I saw the figures on that that and it was staggering. I had friends in Phoenix filling me in on more of the details. However, the cost is still justified IMO to operate it as he does since it is an effective system. And contrary to what many think, there *are* a lot of repeat offenders in Maricopa Co. so they're not exactly scared straight all the time but again, I still believe it's a good system in many ways.

more perfect items for Diane. That bowl is absolutely beautiful and I love the gravy pitcher and plate. I can just see Diane's table set with those beautiful red checked placemats and napkins.

Diane, I know that you are going to enjoying using everything that Sharon sent you for many years to come.

I just adore the gravy picture. It sure makes more sense than a gravy boat -- less surface area to get cool, and easier to pass! What a pretty bowl. I agree that hot crusty rolls in that bowl would be just perfect.

These swap boxes have been so nice and thoughtful. I am sad that there are no deliveries on Thanksgiving.

Super package you have there Diane. Sharon packs a great package....I was lucky enough to receive one from her a few years ago. Beautiful bowl and I love, love the pottery! Those dills are delish...Enjoy!

Great swap package Sharon, I love all of the things you chose for Diane. My eye is especially drawn to that lovely bowl, I can imagine all sorts of good things to eat being served from it. Pretty napkins, and they will go with lots of different settings too. The gravy pitcher is the perfect size - I'm thinking warm maple syrup as well. And the best ending of all, a big jar of homemade pickles to serve with Thanksgiving dinner. Enjoy it all Diane! Sharon, you did real good:-)

wow, I like it all. I think the bowl is my favorite, but the pitcher is really nice and could be used for a lot of things besides gravy.

Very nice choices, Chase. And the dills, of course.....

Wow, Sharon that is really stunning. That bowl, is it from the downtown store we looked at, the one that had all the beautiful wood furniture. Wow, it is really nice.

I love wooden bowls like that, and the pitcher is great also! The napkins remind me of an Italian restaurant, and I would use them whenever I make Italian food. Very beautiful package!
