I am zone 9 - very hot dry summers. JC never got over 3 feet for me - had her about 6 years. I just moved and have been rose shopping. I went to nursery last year in our record breaking hot spell - over 105 - the only roses blooming in their black containers were Doris Day. All of them were blooming - so thats the yellow rose for me.

If plants are in the same type of soil mixture that the plant has been in all it's life, that could be bit of problem: they usually come potted in peat from growers. Peat may be difficult to keep 'just right' as moisture goes, and usually stays too wet for too long, or becomes hydrophobic. When later happens, water does not penetrate it, just runs/slides around and out of drainage holes - making one think that it drains very well. Yet plant is not able to get any moisture. I would like to know how do you make sure/how do you know ..."it is aerated well under the top layer of cactus/succulent soil?"... Layering different substrates is not such great idea. Potting mix should be thoroughly mixed, no layered. For succulents, fast draining mix is the best. That could be achieved easily and simply by using min 50% (or more) of sifted perlite mixed thoroughly with C&S soil. You could use different ingredients - as long as they provide fast drainage (grit, pumice, scoria, and many more). They should be of approx same size - mixing fine with large particles doesn't work well. Fine sand and vermiculite are best avoided. It would help if you added your general location/growing zone next to your name as others do - usually, it helps to give better advice.
