Yay me! Jesse was my swap partner.

First things first, Ceramic - a lovely Hanukkah Platter for the dozens of latkes I make every year. In past years I've used a teacup for the applesauce, so this will be a VAST improvement. LOVE IT!

Next, Paper - a large selection of awesome notepads. These are perfectly Jesse and perfectly hilarious. My favorite is "The secret ingredient is resentment.", but the other are also great -

Best part, they're magnets so they attach right to the fridge.

Oh, but that's not the best part. The best part was the last selection of Jesse's choosing - homemade spiced kumquats and fig preserves! And a can of delicious looking tomatoes. Can't wait to try them all.

And, EJ was kind enough to throw in a craft for the kids, which I'm insisting they not open until Hanukkah.

Thanks Jesse - you rule.

Wow, what a lovely platter. That blue is really stunning. It is so nice to get homemade items! I am sure you will enjoy it all AM.

I've had the fig preserves of course, but homemade spiced kumquats? You must come back and tell us what that's like - drooling minds want to know!

I love the latke plate and the notepads sound like just the thing for busy moms.

If that soil in that geographical area doesn't have ANY worms and shouldn't have any worms because of naturally occurring conditions, then fine, it could be good soil without them,(and good for what?) but I find it hard to believe that there is soil that supports other insect life and plant life devoid of ANY type worms anywhere. And when I say worms, I mean just that, worms, not worm I.E. Eisenia foetida, there are many types of worms on this earth and as long as there is one type of life, there is almost always another. I have found that when a GARDEN is devoid of worms there is a reason. On the compost farm, I searched for weeks for Eisenia foetida and found none, I did find worms in the soil near by,(about 1/4 mile away) but not many. on the farm the soil was tilled and and compacted and all manner of farm chemicals were used for decades before I got there and I am sure this had a effect on all the life that would/could occupy that area. I would also say that if an area is completely devoid of ants or spiders or beetles/grubs or mice or rats or whateva that would naturally occur and if it is devoid of those creatures because of something happening, usually humans can be connected to the absence. AND I am not saying that Eisenia foetida are pure good creature that do no harm, imho they are just another example of an invasive species just trying to live and prosper like good ole Darwin sez. I am always amazed at the strong reactions of people who say they don't like Martha. I have to agree with previous posts, that I don't think these people have actually seen her show or read her magazine, because many of the reasons they give for disliking her are simply not true. For those of you, I'll tell you a little about her show. On her show she features guests as well as her own experts (employees), who show HER and her audience how to. That is what she is about - if you WANT to, you can do it yourself. You don't need to eat at a 5 star restaurant, you can have the 5 star chef show you how to do it at home. That is why she has guests do something they have never done before, or are not necessarily comfortable doing. To show that you can do it, and do not need to feel intimidated. Her show/magazine also features EXPERTS in their field give advice on health, gardening, taking care of your pets. Great tips, practical tips, inexpensive and expensive tips. Why is this so offensive, I'll never know. Obviously, if you aren't interested, then don't watch it/read it! I don't need to think she is the most personable woman in the world to like what she does. And who cares what she does with her money? Calling her materialistic is ridiculous. What about the billionaires who spend their money on solid gold faucets and million dollar parties? She is frugal by comparison and created a center devoted to geriatrics. If you ask me, she can spend her money as frivolously as she wants, she made it, what she does with it is none of my business, besides, I don't care, I have better things to get angry about. I'll save my anger for violent criminals, animal abusers, child abusers. As for her being a poor example for our daughters, I can think of worse, namely the Paris Hiltons and Lindsey Lohans of the world. I believe those who dislike her are INSECURE. They somehow believe that others feel they should "be like Martha". I don't feel I should to be like Martha, but I sure have gotten some amazing recipes from her website. I have a blackberry mint julep recipe that is out of this world. And shame on you for your rude remarks about her hair, my 6 year old knows better.

I wish that Savlon was available in the US. I guess I could buy it off of Amazon. This is a great thread, it's so old though, probably most of the products suggested have been discontinued...HA! My best beauty SECRET is something I just heard about a few months ago and have been doing it ever since. While watching an older (62) youtuber (what exactly do you call these people?) she was speaking of beauty tricks and she told us that years ago, she heard a plastic surgeon say that if women would do this exercise daily, they would never need a face lift. So of course I started do this since I'm in my fifties now. What you do is make a face as if you are smiling as big as you can possibly smile, teeth together but lips apart, you tighten your neck and raise your eyebrows. Do this for 15 seconds, release and do again 10 times a day. Since I have been doing this exercise, I have noticed a remarkable change in my saggy jawline. I have also noticed that my eye lids aren't as saggy either. I will continue to do this forever! I'm sold!

I don't really have a recipe for Ranch dressing - I just make off the cuff. Anyway, here is my method: Take 2-3 cloves of garlic, chopped roughly, and mash them in a mortar and pestle with some Kosher salt to make a paste - probably about half a teaspoon of salt, but you can adjust that to your taste. For some reason, mashing the garlic this way affects its flavor and seems to mellow it out a bit. Then add about 1/2 to one teaspoon of freshly ground black pepper, and mash that together. Next add some fresh dill - about two tablespoons chopped, and mash that with the garlic. Then transfer all of that to a bowl and add the juice of one lemon. Then add 1/2 cup sour cream and 1/2 cup mayonnaise, stir together, and store in the fridge for at least an hour to let the flavors mingle. At this point, it is a very tasty dip for vegetable or chips, but if you want to make it into a salad dressing, you can thin it with buttermilk to the consistency you want. This dip is very addictive with potato chips, and so I warn against serving them together, except at a party. You may want more or less lemon juice than I use, and so add that to taste, like the rest of the ingredients! If the flavor is too intense, you can add more sour cream/mayo. Sorry I can't give you exact measurements, but I always just sort of throw it together, and so I do it by sight. Making it in the blender does not yield the same results as making it in a mortar and pestle - the garlic needs to be smashed with the salt, but you can also do this with the side of a knife on a chopping board. What a cool and unique platter. Those notepads are so neat..especially the sayings. Kumquat and fig preserves sound heavenly, and I've heard those tomatoes are the best.

Oh good AM I'm glad you like it. I was really holding my breath on the notepads....but I just couldn't resist the thought of 'Make your own damn dinner' on a fridge.

The recipe for the kumquats is Kumquats in Spiced Syrup. Jim, a kumquat is a very small citrus which you eat whole. The peel is sweet and the inside is sour.

I couldn't in good conscience just send one inexpensive can of tomatoes, so I had to add to round it out! Some of you remember that Teresa and I RAVE about that brand of maters. Validation here........ordering instructions are on there somewhere...

AM you'll have to post your latke recipe for the deprived. And the depraved - that'll be me.....

Jessica, you did good. The Latke plate is so pretty. Can't wait for Arabella to load it up with latkes. I'd be putting sour cream in that little centre dish to serve with them. And the note pads are too cute.

Sharon, I can't believe having lived in Toronto that you have never had a Latke at one of the many wonderful Jewish Delis.

What a nifty platter. Jessy, you always find great stuff. That reminds me that I want to order one of those "weiner men" for my nephews in law for Christmas.

I also have to catch up on my Jewish food. I've never had a latke or a blintz. Strange, because my BF is Jewish and I practically have a synagogue in my backyard. My mom does make a mean matzo ball soup, though.

Oh boy, I NEED that platter! It's beautiful and just the ticket for serving potato latkes, or even soufganiot (jelly donuts) and maybe some cinnamon sugar for dipping?? Jessy, you put together the nicest swap packages, I can't decide which of those note pads I like best:-) The fig preserves are sublime, on a bagel with cream cheese. Enjoy it all AM, and maybe we can start a Chanukah thread with all of our latke recipes!!

Great package EJ! Love the platter, perfect for AM's holiday entertaining. The homemade things add a special personal touch as well. Guess I'll have to order some of those tomatoes, I've yet to find them in the stores here.

Enjoy it all AM! Oh, fill us in on the kids surprise when they get it.

I make lots of latkes, and so I can relate to that plate. I also make fig preserves and so I know how great it is to have some of that!! Sarcastic notes cards... I think that's possibly a female thing!!! Have fun with them! I'm sure your kids will appreciate them.
