Island to island my swap package arrived!

The mail carrier rang the bell just after 8 p.m. and delivered a large mailer which could be books from TitleTrader Â or possibly my Gardenweb swap package. It turned out to be the latter.

My package came from Lori in Rhode Island.

The first thing I pulled out of the mailer was a cookbook: Modern Greek by Andy Harris. It's a large format book and has many mouthwatering photographs of the dishes. Despite the title, it contains many traditional Greek dishes, like Spanakopita (spinach pie), Kourabiedes (shortbread Christmas cookies), Baklava and halva. Thank you so much Lori! I love Greek food and did not have a Greek cookbook in my collection. I think I will make some Kourabiedes for Christmas.

The second thing I pulled out was a gorgeous home-made cookbook with my name on it. It has photo pockets for pages, which will come in handy for keeping clipped and hand-written recipes. Included are some recipes from Lori, a mixture of family and forum favourites.

The last thing was tin of Nantucket Rub, a spice mix for fish that I look forward to trying.

Lori, thank you for a wonderful swap package.

The cookbook sounds good, but the homemade one sounds even better! That rub will probably be interesting on local fish, LOL!

Jim: I'm starting with one foot in the grave given it's size. I really want this fella to have the "Fairest" shot of surviving but I think I might have to do what Wetsuiter suggested on extremely cold nights. Size wise, I probably can throw a large plastic garbage can over it in a jiffy. xero: I spoke to Americana at Manhasset and suggested they try my Fortuneis. I'm still waiting to hear back from them. The Port Washington Yacht Club wanted them but the wind coming off the Sound was way too much for Fortuneis. I suggested Waggies but for the size they wanted, it would have cost too much. Prinbama: That's what I thought they were. This place is located in Island Park which part of greater Long Beach on Long Island's south shore. Seems like a very young crowd...I'm married, in my mid-40's so I'm guessing they'd look at me like an old fart. Wetsuiter: Great suggestion/compromise given the size. I'd say the general populus wants to see if my formula is for real sooner rather than later so I think I will have to follow your advice and make exceptions, just for specific weather events. In other words, I will leave it unprotected 95% of the time. When it gets bigger and reaches it's true cold hardiness, then we can see what it can take. I also agree that this place got bad advice as to which palms they should use. Plus, the pots that they are in seem to be 30-gallons at best, so what kind of healthy root system could ever be established-given it's size? Those babies must have cost a fortune, what a waste. The owner has another place on the water in Lindenhurst, and has another 20 there. He had to have spent a minimum of $1600 per palm at very cheap wholesale prices...probably more like $1800.00 to $2000.00 given what I know about pricing. He probably flushed close to $80K down the toilet.

Tracey, I'd love to send you some snow but we hardly have any ourselves. Our annual dog sled race, the Yukon Quest, left from Fairbanks (AK) enroute to Whitehorse (YK), but this year because of the small amount of snow we've had, they've had to turn back and finish the race at Dawson City (about 7 hours northwest of here). I like Michigan cherries also and especially with dark chocolate! I also love the Michigan maple syrup and always look for it. The cloths are definitely cheerful and look especially nice in a bundle. I'm not a dog person, but JoeBear is especially cute (I'm okay with small dogs), and photographs very well. Pictures of snow scenes always look like alien planets to me, and the colors are always so weird - but that might be from clouds. By my calculations, winter should be over in another week, since March is officially spring. I do remember being shocked at how drab New York was when I first went there in December. I love the blue foil paper too, if that's what it is! Lars

What a lovely package. I just love that homemade cookbook (Are you a scrapbooker, Lori?) The Greek cookbook appeals to em, also. Have fun cooking Greek, netla! Nice job, Lori!

I know Lori was worried because it took so long to arrive. So now she can breath a sigh of relief.

What a wonderful swap box. I love Greek food and that looks like a great cookbook. Oh Lori the homemade cookbook is beautiful. What a great idea.

Fish rub? I don't think I've ever heard of that, I'll bet it's good, coming from the coast.

Nice job, Lori! Netla (Johanna!) you'll love the Nantucket Rub. It's got a bright, fresh taste with just a bit of punch. I use it on all kinds of fish, even on chicken sometimes. Nice package!

Whew! I was so nervous, Netla!

The handmade had me stumped because I can't can (yet) and I didn't want to send any other food stuff that might spoil (since now I know this took forever to get there - glad I didn't).

Netla, I know you said you like to keep your notes of different recipes, so I thought this would be a good way of organizing them. I've never done scrapbooking before but I think now I will. You can add pages as you go along (there happen to be blank pages in there...sshhhh, not cheating.) I added one recipe for each category to get you started. Some are mine; some are forum favorites.

I think I want to go back and get the Greek book for myself! LOL

This probably sounds silly, but I just love it when swap packages are color coordinated!! I think this is a particularly classy groups of items. Great job Lori. Sounds perfect for Netla.

Wonderful package Lori. The book you made is beautiful. I got the same cookbook in this swap Netla! I love it; I'll be making Ktipiti "Spicy Feta and Pepper dip" on page 21 as the starter for my soup and grilled sandwich virtual dinner this Saturday. The Nantucket rub looks very interesting; I'm curious about what spices are in it.

I know you'll enjoy everything Netla.

Lori, I see you were enticed by the same wonderful photos in the Greek cookbook as I was! I think your idea of making Netla her very own cookbook is genius and so creative. It's also lovely to look at. Good job Lori! Netla, I know you're going to enjoy it all!

Well I think it's just way cool! The home made cookbook is so nice. So is the Greek one, but I just love that home made one. What a clever idea. I've made one for myself, but it's just a tatty recycled binder I dug out of my closet. Your's is so pretty. The spice rub has got to be good, too.

Wonderful package Netla. All three things sound good to me because I love Greek, I've never had the spice rub and putting all the recipes you like in a book and giving it to someone is just such a great gift. Lori, a very high five for this one!

Netla, I know that the arrival of your swap package made two people very happy. Lori can breath a sigh of relief that her wonderful swap box arrived. I also enjoy Greek food and I'm sure you will enjoy trying some new recipes from the cookbook. The homemade cookbook is beautiful. What a super idea.

That homemade cookbook is a very cool and unique item like so many of the others in this swap. I'll be looking for a recipe from the Greek book too. I've yet to meet a dry rub that I didn't like. Enjoy Nelta! Great box Lori!

This entire package is great. BUT, the homemade cookbook is just fantastic! What a wonderful memory of Lori...the inclusion of her family recipes makes it so special...great job, Lori!

A friend gave me a similar cookbook years and years ago. I still pop clippings into it. It was such a thoughful and useful gift. Lori, your book is also beautiful.

The Greek cookbook looks interesting, as does the rub. The kid, who brought home gyro-makings for dinner, wandered in just now and said, "Greek. Kewl." lol.
