Katie, you rock!

So yesterday I got home from work and headed straight to the garden because it's getting cold out there and I had to save the rest of the tomatoes before last night's hard frost. As I'm picking tomatoes, I ask Bob for a big box. A lightbulb goes on over his head - "Hey you got a box today." (screw the garden. LOL)

It was from one of my CF idols, KatieC. Katie, I've always been a big fan of yours because of your wealth of knowledge, great recipes, generosity (boy, is she generous) and your work ethic - take a break, girl! LOL

As I said in my thank you letter last night to Katie, I sure hope she took pictures because I don't have a camera right now. If not, I will borrow my sister's because I want everybody to see my cool stuff.

The first thing I found was a bottle of local wine. Really the only wine I drink is Pinot Gris and that's what this is. Cool, cool, cool, with a pretty label. Bob and I will toast Katie with it this weekend. WooHoo!

Next was definitely one of MY favorites - a garlic press. In fact, it's identical to the one I used to have but mine broke and I've never found one I like more than that one. I'm thrilled to have it again. We love garlic in our house and this will get used often.

A tragic thing happend as Katie was packing the box. Some homegrown garlic accidentally fell in - a couple of different varieties, no less. Can you imagine?! Fortunately, I am the lucky recipient of this mishap. Thank goodness she didn't cheat, though.

Next, Katie read that I enjoy baking, and my favorite cookbooks are ones with lots of pictures. Let's face it - I need them. LOL She sent me The Taste of Home Baking book. It's huge with lots of quick and easy recipes that I know I will use. These will be great to let the kids experiment with too, on their own, as my 12 yr old is really starting to get an interest in baking (it's all about the chocolate). We will get alot of use out of this book, especially with holiday baking coming up.

As Katie said, the book has "down to earth recipes by real people." And ya know how she knows that? One of HER recipes is in the book! It's her garlic-herb bubble bread (monkey bread, which we love). It's right there. In my book. MY book. Now THAT'S cool.

One other thing I forgot to mention: Katie sent a postcard of her area with a note. When I get my sister's camera, I HAVE to take a picture of the view from my house. (as I said to Katie, the similarities are amazing.)

Katie, I hope you got my thank you letter last night. I know how Gweb mail can be sometimes. Thank you again for everything. You did an excellent job researching the way I live and cook (love to get the family involved, but usually quick meals on the go).

As I said, I've always had so much respect for Katie's talent. You're The Bomb, Katie! Thank you again!

You know how one of the listers found out their dog had torn into their box? That would have been my husband doing the tearing if it was a box with home grown garlic in it. How very cool! Katie, it sounds like you did a fantastic, thoughtful job. Lori, I can't wait to see pictures. It sounds like a true delight.

I do have a white garden a section of the whole garden, if you don't count the coral Lycoris radiata in August nor the pink Crinum that I cannot kill nor the Spring and Fall crocus. It is unlike Vita's in that hers included many grey leaved plants to extend the effect. My leaves are an emphatically green background for the flowers, Taxus media, Vinca minor (white flowered), Nandina (white berried), Daphne odora marginata, Skimmia japonica (white berried), and the various leaves of flowering plants, roses, ('Katharina Ziemet', 'Blanc Double de Coubert', 'Sombreuil', 'Ilse Krohn Superior', 'White Pet', 'Mlle de Sombreuil', and 'White Maman Cochet' - 'Bolero' died but will be replaced in multiples), Helleborus niger, H.xhybridus and bulbs, Tulipa 'Purissima', Narcissus 'Thalia' and Colchicum autumnalis alba. The Gardenias, Citrus trees and Tabernaemontana grandiflora (an unfussy gardenia relative) reside in this patio garden in the summer so I guess that's more white. Cath

Congrats, Mindy. You're obviously really on top of your watering, I'd have trouble keeping anything in 3" pots going all summer. Even plants in 12" pots wilt awfully quickly on me if I don't water EVERY day. We got spoiled with so much rain this summer so it was easy to get out of the habit. I bought a coleus this spring that I really like. I've been rooting cuttings to pot up for next year, but since the original plant is in a pot, would it work to just bring it in before frost? I don't have grow lights or even super sunny windows. If I try, should I cut it way back? Last fall I brought in asparagus fern, which did very well indoors all winter. I also brought in a pretty red oxalis, which promptly died--or so I thought. I never got around to doing anything with the pot, just left it on the windowsill, and several months later it resurrected itself. I learned later that oxalis goes through a period of dormancy. I also have some fancy geraniums which never bloomed as much as they should have--I probably didn't feed them enough or give them quite as much sun as they like--but I'm wondering whether it's worth bringing them in. As much money as I usually end up spending on annuals, it's hard to see it all go away in the fall!

Garden Catalogs Arriving Earlier Than Usual

Moni, I love the garden catalogs....I can sit and look at them endlessly as the guys are watching football, for example, on a cold Sunday afternoon. Still, even after looking at the paper copies, I'll go and order online because it is faster. We do not have a lot of seed sources here in southern OK--mostly just Wal-Mart and Lowe's in Ardmore, and Home Depot in Gainesville, Texas. The farm and ranch stores don't offer much of a selection, and even less the last couple of years. I miss the places in Fort Worth that had a gazillion kinds of seeds, especially the ones with bulk seed in big cans that you scooped out and bought by the ounce. When we returned from doing a little Christmas shopping earlier today, I picked up the mail and noticed two new catalogs today: one from Vermont Bean Seed Co. and one from Totally Tomatoes. Both are owned by the same parent company, and it also owns HPS (two catalogs from them in the last 4 months) and Shumway Seeds (no cat. yet). If the grassfires or wildfires don't start up on this "Extreme to Very High Fire Danger" day, I hope to finish a fencing project in the next couple of hours, and maybe then I can squeeze in time to scan through the pages of these two catalogs to see "what's new". Sorry I abandoned this tread for awhile. My dad forgot to put my new car in park when he got out of it. It rolled off the driveway, DOWNHILL about 200+ yards thru the pasture. A large tree stopped it, killing it (my car) :( The most wonderfully awesome, perfect for me car EVER! 36 hours of crying can do some nasty things to your eyes AND face :( warmfridge, right now I have one of those small plastic liquid medicine cups in the mesh basket. I've put bottle rings and nipples in it. Small plastic forks and spoons but mostly, it's seldom used. It's not in the way to I chose to leave it :) magothyrivergirl, my Maytag was almost 10 years old. The repair cost ratio dictated a new one...Oh no! I did myself a favor a few years ago and gave away all my stoneware and replaced it with Corelle. I know a lot of people think it's tacky but maybe those people don't have issues with their hands and arms (YET!) I can pick up 4 or 5 plates with one hand at one time. They fit nicely and don't chip. We aren't wine drinkers so I don't have this problem but you can remove one half of the top cutlery try to give room for your stemware. Picture below. Any stemware should fit. You can put the extra silverware in the corner basket on the bottom rack or use your silverware basket that a lot of us have removed to make more room in the bottom. This dw seems to have endless possibilities! tress21, I haven't used heated dry in 20 years. It heats the house and costs more in energy costs. I'm glad I have it if I ever decide I need it :) There are two halves to the cutlery tray. You can easily take one (or both for that matter) out for tall stemware and you wouldn't have to lower the middle row. I keep forgetting about this when I have a lot of big pots and pans to wash. OY!

oh that sounds great-- a good garlic press is an essential and I bet it's one of favorite things alot of us will admit to-- and a good bottle of wine probably makes that list too.

I just love the Taste of Home cookbooks-- real people cooking for families-- you'll get lots of us from that. And how cool that it has one of Katie's recipes.

Homegrown garlic, that's so much better than the stuff we get in the stores that has been sitting around for a couple of months, what a tragic yet happy accident. LOL

I saw that cookbook at Sam's Club, Amanda really likes the TOH books and magazines. And katie's recipe is in there? Now that's really cool....

MMMMMMMM!!! Great! And what a sorry thing that homegrown garlic for the garlic press fell in!! How cool that Katie's recipe is in the cookbook, too! AWESOME!!

Sounds like the CF equivalent of a great date: "A bottle of wine, a garlic press, and thy recipe beside me"!

How cool to have a cookbook with your swap partner's recipe in it! And home grown garlic is even better than a garlic press! And something to toast your swap partner with! A very cool box.

WOW...fresh garlic and nothing is better then fresh garlic! What varieties were in the box?

Ahhhhh Wine! What would I do without my wine and I've been having a glass almost every night lately. Must be the weather...LOL!!

I didn't even think to take a picture....sorry!

I'm glad that bottle made it unscathed...I always worry.

The garlic was part of a set (with the press, dontchaknow?)So very legal. hehehe.

I hope you find good things in the book, Lori. I haven't thoroughly checked it out yet. It was a little strange to be standing in Costco thumbing through it and seeing my recipe in there.

lori, sounds like a fun box and to get a few varieties of home grown garlic, just excellent!!!! how great that your cookbook from your swap pal contains one of her recipes? how special is that!

Oh to have homegrown garlic...I now have to search labels for Gilroy or any USA grown stuff. Too much from China!
