WANTED: Told You I Was South! Told You I Was South!

I arrived home tonight and there was Kathleen's box sitting on my front porch! I just knew somehow that she was my swap partner. I'm sorry for the suspense, but photos will be posted tomorrow. Since I can't post photos until tomorrow I'm not telling you about the nice things inside until then either. I know, I know, I'm a spoilsport!

Beverly, there's another box coming UPS, prob Monday. So make Michelle wait till it all arrives.....lol
I hope you like what's in the box, I bought so many different things that are my favorites, and tried to get help from Marigene and Cindy M.
You can just tell me if anything was broken, but don't tell ..you know who... what's in the box.

Redsox - it seems I've come full circle in my rose growing choices. I started out growing roses in Maine, then New Hampshire and then Vermont. So when I began I only grew the once blooming Europeans like Albas and Gallicas along with a few Canadian Explorers and hybrid Rugosas. Then when I moved to a warmer climate I started experimenting with Austins, teas, chinas and noisettes. It's taken me 7 years of experimenting here at my current home but I'm finally refining what I can and can't grow here. Let me preface by saying I don't spray so I have limited myself considerably. When I started out here I tried many teas, tea noisettes and chinas. I gave them three years. Most have been replaced, sad to say, with moderns like hybrid musks, shrub roses, and hybrid rugosas. Of the OGRs I still have are Maggie, SDLM, Marie Pavie and her sister, Marie Daly, Marchessa Boccella (in a pot because I don't like the damask crud she gets here), Great Western, Reine des Violettes, Koenigin von Danemark, and several hybrid rugosas that don't really qualify as OGRs as they hover around the 1900 date of hybridization. After all these years of growing roses, along with getting older, I've just decided that roses must be a part of my landscape, and treated just like all my other landscape plants. Accordingly they must perform up to par to be kept in the garden. This year I'm adding more albas, some more rugosas, more of the hybrid musks I really love, and some species roses. I'm considering ramblers. As I'm running out of "backyard" space I'm expanding out toward our 5 acre field so I won't be able to water and tend like I do near the house. I'm leaning toward a more relaxed garden, I'm now looking at a painting of Alba semi-plena hanging on the wall of my office, that's the effect I want to evoke in my gardens.

Talk about strange rules: I can raise a variety of hot peppers and either sell them ripe or dehydrate them and sell them that way. Ditto for fruit. But with peppers, I can grind them up (and I can cut up fruit) then mix them together, put the spice in a baggies or bottle and sell the blend. But not fruit, unless I have a certified kitchen. But what I can do is put together a container that has X amount of dehydrated apples, bananas, cherries, apricots, peaches, blackberries, raspberries, etc., as long as they are each in their own bag/bottle and sell it. Zebra mussel, LOL! I really did laugh out loud at that one :) I found a deer skull last year right by a path I walk at least once a month - most of the skeleton was there. I cannot believe I never saw this dead deer before it was skeletonized (or that dear doggies didn't whiff it). I brought the skull home, which has one nice antler (that was buried in the ground) - and one gnawed off stump that the rodents had been at. I have to wonder if it floated downstream and was washed to where I saw it? There's a large stream nearby, but I don't recall a flooding event big enough to move a buck carcass. Makes me wonder if I'm as observant as I like to think...

This is one of my pet peeves. We are interviewing contractors for our kitchen project right now. Some of them look at the plans, listen to what we have to say, and then raise a point or two like, have you thought about x? I am fine with that and happy to have someone point out things based on their experience that I may not have realized. Then there are the contractors that say things like, "Induction? You don't want induction. All the best chefs cook with gas." Grrr. These guys have probably never gotten near a cooktop in their lives other than to install one. That doesn't seem to stop them from giving their very definitive advice. Or the guy who said - "you have to do dark wood floors." Me - I don't want dark wood floors. I love how they look but they show too much dust and I know I won't be able to keep them clean. Him - oh, no, that's silly, you have to do dark wood floors, they will look great in your kitchen. Well, guys with an attitude like that will NEVER get my business. We have spoken to about six contractors, and with each contractor, I raised the issue of make up air requirements. Each and every one of them dismissed me and said something like "I've done lots of kitchens, never installed make up air, and never had a problem. Crack open a window when you use the hood on high." This makes me crazy. I wish at least one of them would listen to what we have to say and respond - well, I haven't done it before but I'll ask my HVAC guy what he thinks.

And have I told you about my rag collection, dust rags, wash rags, old tee shirt rags. Good for dusting, mopping, wiping, cleaning the car, etc. How I would love to share my favorite rags!

Well I worried all weekend for nothing! I just knew it was me as I am the most south (I think). We were out of town, returning late Monday night and I worried about the package sitting on my door step for four days. I even called a neighbor to check for the box.

Beverly, take your time posting, I'm catching up with email and reading the forum so I'm in no hurry.

Sorry about your worry Cathy.

I'm sure Kathleen worked very hard trying to put together a swap package that I would like so I didn't want to post any peace-mil (sp?) pictures. I wanted all of it posted together. If the other box did get lost I will post pictures in a couple of days though. I don't want you ladies to be inside those caskets instead of out.
