WANTED: 5.6 earthquake tonight - glad I already sent my box.

That was a real wake up call tonight. Reminded me painfully of the 1989 one we had. It was a real roller coaster that lasted a long time for an earthquake. I yelled at my son to get under his desk. I held on to my dog until it was over then she jumped off the sofa and ran to the door and barked. I guess she thought the rumble was someone knocking at the door. Boy I am glad I got my package mailed early. You just never know when the Big One is going to hit.

I'm glad everyone was OK. How scary! We had one (in non earthquake prone NY) in 85 and I remember thinking that the alarm clock was unusually loud and...why as my bed shaking? Is your area prone to earthquakes?

I love how Elvira went to tell the earthquake to "get lost". Hope you didn't get any damage.

I'm glad everyone is okay. I thought the latest advice was to shelter next to a large solid piece of furniture (a bed counts) rather than under one. The survivors of building collapses have been found in the void formed next to large furniture. I'm not sure how much that applies to wood frame one story houses as opposed to high rises.

I was awakened by the Oakland 4.3 quake last July - many stories up in a hotel room. I rolled off the bed and crouched next to it - then wondered if it really was a quake vs a bad dream but the next morning the news confirmed it.

Morning all! Fran, I put in a bit more postage than what it was for me to mail my package to you. I don't think that I'll get back what I sent because we have a lot of veggie growers here, BUT if by chanace you dont have enough postage I'd be happy to send more if you need it to get my package back to me. I'm so glad that I bought the veggie seeds, I could almost hear how excited people were when I offered them up for grabs! Mabel, when I try those huckleberries, I will report on the taste. I already know that I am going to like them, I am a fruity kind of person.:) Cathy, I have a very small and sharp knife that I use for peeling the loquats, I saw the knife recommended in one of those Cooking Light magazines. It can also chop herbs very fine. One day's picking is a lot of fruit, tomorrow I will be making an almond crust loquat pie. Later in the season I will be making jam and maybe chutney. And I hope to share the fruit with my friends also... Here is the recipe that I used. Loquat Crisp Fruit Mixture: 6 cups loquats, seeded, peeled and cut in quarters 1/2 cup granulated sugar 2 TB all-purpose flour 1 TB fresh lime juice 1 pinch salt Streusel (keep in fridge cold if making ahead): 1/4 light brown sugar 4 TB butter 1/8 tsp salt 1/2 cup flour 1 TB grated orange zest To make Fruit Mixture: In a stainless steel bowl, combine the loquats, sugar, flour, lime juice and salt, mixing well. Place the mixture in an oven-proof 2 qt. baking dish. To make Streusel: Using a food processor fitted with the metal blade, pulse together the light brown sugar, butter, salt, flour and orange zest. Pulse only until it is combined and looks like the texture of small pebbles. Preheat oven to 350. Cover the loquat mixture loosely with the streusel. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, until the fruit is bubbling and the top is golden brown. Remove from the oven and serve hot. Makes about 6 servings. Silvia

Lori, the package did make me feel special :) I really love the glasses, used them last night. I know nothing about wine pairings but we had some Sauvignon Blanc, which I love, with a pasta dinner and toasted to Karen! Larry said who is Karen Riverrat? LOL! I totally love these glasses! GranJan, I didn't notice any fingerprints, they were very light and very nice in my hand. The wine stayed cold. Maybe get a couple to try. I'd recommend them in a second! Thanks for the link, Jessy! Carol, I am so glad you like your package. I was so happy when I got your email, you really made my day. When I read on the cookbook thread that you like Ina Garten, but already had a copy of her new cookbook reserved I started looking on online at her cookbooks. So, Jessy you will have to share the credit with foodnetwork.com. It was a toss up on wine or peanuts for regional, but after thinking about peanut allergies, decided to go with the wine. I had intended to send salsa for the homemade category, but when I saw the silverware bracelet at the craft show I changed my mind immediately. May, I bought the bracelet in Amarillo at a craft show, but it was made by a man in Wichita Falls. I thought he really did pretty work. He had bracelets, earrings and key fobs. But, I didn't even pickup a card with his name on it and wish I would have. I would like to get some more for Christmas. Carol, I hope you will enjoy your bracelet and DVD's. I am assuming that the wine is gone or almost. LOL It was a joy to have you for a swap partner!

Nina - No damage, thanks for asking. Just some frayed nerves and brought up some bad memories from the 1989 earthquake. We are close to a major fault here, about 4-5 miles. But it didn't scare Elvira who is a courageous little Dachshund!

Clare, so glad you're OK! It's scary when you think that earthquakes happen so quickly, with little to no warning. Of course it's understandable that this last quake dredged up memories from the one in 1989. Sending you wishes for safety and peace, plus a couple hugs for you, Elvira and your dear son too! Thanks everyone for your well wishes. When even a small one hits, it is in the back of your mind - Is this IT! Part of the price you pay to live in CA.

I'm so glad you are ok. I always worry about you guys in CA when it comes to earthquakes. At least I can run away from the hurricanes that come our way.

Norm and I were in the balcony of a theatre when it hit! I was thinking it was not the place I would choose to be. But afterwards I dedcided it was better than being UNDER the balcony!

Interesting that no one got up. Probably because we were anxiously awaiting the discussion between Ruth Reichel, Alice Waters and Calvin Trillin. Ane it was worth the shake up!
