WANTED: Sol Makes Me Pucker Up!!!

Well, another swap package arrives when someone needs it and mine came from Sol on a day I'm home sick. What a cheerful, sunny (sol) package it is! Lemon is my favorite flava, whether savory or sweet, and Sol packed it full of citrusy goodness! I love it!

Thank you so much, Sol! What a fantastic job you did. Sol is another swapper is mathematically challenged because there are way more than five things in that box.

First of all, gorgeous lemony yellow placemats and napkins. Beautiful! I think they'll look great with my Fiestaware. And she got me the coolest outdoor glasses. I had my eye on something very similar a couple of months ago but I refrained from buying them. Thank you!

There's a great book of lemon recipes which I cannot wait to read. I love lemon! And a bottle of lemon juice. Hey, baby, this ain't RealLemon. This is in a very cool bottle.

And a glass reamer! Insert your sexual innuendo here. But it's like the wooden one, which I can now discard, except it's glass and you can do lemons and limes. I am a woman who likes variety so very suitable!

The ramekins! They are so cute, I just love them. Lemon pots de creme, here I come.

And saffron! I bought some Valencia rice a little while ago and I see some paella in our future.

Of course, the final item, and it is pretty puckery in not a pretty way, is the Cat Butt Gum! Hilarious!

Sol, you just outdid yourself, darlin', it is such a cool package. Vicki calls it summer fun. I can't thank you enough... well, um, not sure I want to do a house swap over winter. But you come on down, girl, and I will make you something to make you pucker! Thank you again!

Wow that's wonderful! I love the glass reamer. I use my wooden one all the time and never even knew they made them in glass!

What a bright cheerful package! Cat butt gum.......um, maybe I really don't want to know! Love all the yellow! The lemon/lime reamer is pretty cool, too. Great job, Sol!

I couldn't disagree more!! Potting soil or soil suited for growing in containers has very different requirements than soil necessary for inground growing conditions. This is primarily because container culture is a closed environment requiring frequent, often daily, watering, offering a limited root run and with a need for exceptional drainage. Too much organic matter (in the form of any kind of compost) will eventually adversely impact drainage, as it continues to decompose and compact, reducing pore space. The best container soils generally contain no real soil and very modest amounts of OM. Peat or coir (cocoa fiber) is a good base (yes, they are OM but very slow to decompose) and you do need the addition of pumice or perlite to facilitate drainage and provide porosity. High fired clay (Turface) is a great substitute for these if available in your area. Bark fines will help with moisture retention plus provide necessary texture and pore space. Check out the Container forum for many excellent DIY potting soil recipes, especially any of the posts by Al (tapla). If you have access to Gardner and Bloome products, look for their Blue Ribbon Potting soil. I've used this product for years and it is an excellent medium for any kind of container growing, especially for long-term containers, which can be a challenge to maintain with quality soil conditions and fast drainage.

i can certainly feel your pain in this one. when i moved to my home, the outside (i won't even comment on the inside) had not been touched for 12 to 15 years. the house was owned by a woman in her mid 90's when i purchased it. other than her front lawn (which no longer exists), nothing, and i mean nothing, had been touched. my yard, was an absolute jungle. it took me a year to get it to a forrest, another year and it became a plain tapestry for me to start from scratch. the sad part was she had everything and everything growing and i was really able to only salvage about 10% of it. all that could be salvaged, i took my chain saw and buzzed them down to ankle level. they grew back and are now managable. i hated it in the beginning, but it was the only way. i made the big mistake of working everywhere, in all directions, as opposed to properly working one area at a time. then the light bulb went off and that's what i did - concentrate in one area at a time. i started with my front, ripped out all those nasty hedges and yews and dead azaleas. i have no grass now, it's beautifully landscaped (if i do say so myself) and laid a path to the back. from there i worked on other sections. i'm in my house almost 11 years and i'm not done. from what i understand, you are never done. i still have one problem area, but cement is really starting to look good LOL - it is probably the only part i will ever have done professionally, because i need a bobcat to come in, dig and level. the one thing i did learn was how to separate all the perennials, i also took whatever anyone gave me - especially if they grew well, and put them in where ever i ripped something out. that's one of the things i highly recommend. if you are weeding an area, make sure you put something in it's place to force weeds out completely. split your hostas, iris, as well as those native orange lilies (oeople call them ditch lilies), sedums work well too. under some of the trees, kill off the grass and lay mulch - even that playground mulch and here and there put little sitting areas or even that ground ivy or pachysandra. there's so much you can do. as for your downed trees, cut some of the trunk enough to bury a little in the ground for it to become stepping stones. the wood that remains that is "rotted" rent a chipper and have it ground up and then mix that with some good dirt and use that as mulch. (you might want that to sit for a year). read up on lasagne gardening and it will save you digging and weeding. start now and by fall, you can get a boatload of bulbs in it and it's one last area to worry about come spring. my biggest suggestion to you - as a fellow gardener - is DON'T GIVE UP. i know an old house in and of itself is a royal PITA, but gardening shouldn't be - it's such great therapy. best of luck to you. i always keep a shovel and gloves in my hand, so....if i'm passing by, i'll stop and dig and weed for ya :) just have some...

That is a drop dead gorgeous package..and your photography, gee Diana, it could have been an ugly package (which of course it wasn't) and it would have been beautiful with your photography.
Anyway, Sol, you did a wonderful job. I love the puckery lemon stuff. (That lemon juice bottle is gorgeous too)

Diana, you're welcome! We had no computer access at all yesterday, so I couldn't check. But, I'm glad the package got to you when it did. As I'll be off (Annie and Jessica, to you I say: Shaddap!) on vacation in a few days, and was afraid I'd miss it.

I have to add, I experienced that sinking "uh-oh, I stepped in it again" feeling, when I sent off the package and suddenly realized I hadn't taken any pictures of the contents. I hate that; especially when I go on and on, admitting my estupidez in public forums. ;-Ã

But anyway, I breathed a sigh of relief when I remembered that you were the professional photographer here, so, if anybody could make the contents in that box look good, it would have to be you. And as we can all see, I'm right on both counts: You are a magnificient photographer and I'm never wrong. Case adjourned.

Diana, I'm glad you liked the citrus reamer, which is why I had to get one for me too.

Regarding the Cat Butt Gum, I'm so sorry. That darn thing landed in my shopping basket when I wasn't looking. The sender accepts no responsibility for anything suggested, hissed, burped or puckered. Again, my apologies [G]

Ellen, I knew about Diana's collection of Fiestaware, but I didn't know about her "citrusy kitchen." It must've been the psychic (or psycho) in me that nailed it.

What a great theme! And I love that glass lemon reamer -- that's the kind of thing you want to hang on the wall, rather than store in a drawer, so you can see it all the time. It looks summery all by itself, and more than a little magical.

I sent Cat Butt Gum to a friend of mine -- purportedly from my cat Frank. Haven't heard her final take on it either....

Ah, a gasp escaped me when I saw the photo of the citrus reemer; had a major 'O'-over it!!

I love yellow!! My new apartment will have yellow walls somewhere (Let the sunshine in, oh let the sunshine in.....size = +1>color=yellow> Drat! That's hard to read!

Anywho, Diana and Vicki are two of the sunniest people I've ever met, just add vodka to them lemons and limes and watch 'em smile.

Let's see, the cheery linens, unbreakable glasses, the book.......sigh! Everything, Sol, is so happy!

Butt gum? Not going there! HeeHee

That bottle of lemon juice IS really cool, as is the ramekins and reamer! That is one sunny package, Sol (doesn't sol mean sun in Spanish, BTW?) ~ great job!

Whta a perfect box from our Sunny Sol. And no, I won't "shaddup", I know you've been off. Nearly as long as I have. (grin)

I really like the brightness of that whole box and I love lemon anything. That lemon juice is very interesting, I've never seen anything quite like that.

Of course, I've never seen Cat Butt Gum before either. Ahem.

Dear, dear Doris, I knew exactly what you meant. In fact, I had a similar ugh-reaction when I first saw the gum. Then I giggled like a little hooligan who thought she was getting away with something.

You don't own any kitties, do you Doris? There might be a cat butt gum coming to a mailbox near you. ;-)

Msafirstein, I can tell you a bit about the book. As you've probably noticed, these swaps sometimes get a little out of control. Translation: I bought the same book for me too.
This book contains information about Lemons, starting with their history and recipes (There's a Meyer Lemon marmalade recipe in this book that I - a member of the non-canning brigade - would love to make). Followed by crafts, how to grow lemons, as well as, its more practical, household uses. This little book contains a lot of pictures too.

Thank you Diana and Annie Banani! I won't be leaving until tomorrow, so I had to drop by and hang wit yous guys.

Diana-I love everything about this package! Lemon is my favorite flavor, too! The placemat and napkins are a pretty color. Cool glasses. I'm dying to hear about the lemon pots de cremes you make!! That saffron sounds good. I love that bottle the lemon juice is in!! I think the juicer is almost too pretty to use! It's great. Cat Butt Gum? Huh??? That's very funny! Enjoy!
