Wheeeeee!!!!

I came home from work to find a heavy box waiting from me from North Carolina! I knew immediately it had to be from Susan because she'd posted it was waiting on someone's doorstep. Who knew it would be ME?

Susan put together a jam-packed beautiful package for me, full of wonderful goodies.

Inside was a letter telling me a bit about herself - what a nice touch, I have to remember to do that next swap! The gifts were in five groups.

1. Tied with a purple bow:

Things for the kitchen and dining area:

Four adorable grape napkin holders, can't wait to use these! A grape hot pad and two dish towels -- all of which are perfect in my kitchen!!

2. Tied with a pink bow:

Items from NC: Two bottles of wine, Blackberry - sounds very sweet but it sounds perfect to drink with AnnT's brownies which I have a few left over from the weekend so that will be a treat! And a bottle of Biltmore wine, Cabernet. Doris (ruddmd) had sent me a bottle of Biltmore wine previously and it was very good so I'm really looking forward to trying the cab!

Also a bottle of ZY marinade which Susan says starts out sweet and gets hot, sounds wonderful!

And Mama Dip's Cookbook which includes some hsitory as well as recipes. I love it!

3. Tied with a hot pink bow:

"Just cuz I like them." A grape wine bottle stopper, perfect for me because I love to have lots of these on hand. And the most perfect napkins - also perfect for me. I love this kind of stuff!! And as a matter of fact, wine IS a serving of fruit, actually more than one serving because who just drinks one glass??!

4. The Thing in Flowered Wrapping.

Susan decorated and sewed a pocket on this apron for me, it's just wonderful. I love handmade stuff like this because long after I've finished the wine and marinade, this apron will always bring Susan to mind and I can think of how sweet she was to take her time to make this for me.

5. Packages tied in string, for my boys.

They're both away for the summer so I HAD to go ahead and open them. Each boy got a Bert's Bees lip balm which is perfect cuz my kids always need this stuff (and it's made in NC!). And for them (or is it for me?) a plaque which says "The Golden Rule: Keep Mom happy and you're Golden"

Boy did she have you pegged! That is a perfect "MAY" package filled with grapes and wine! Susan you did an awesome job-- those napkin rings are super and the cookbook looks like something I'd enjoy too!

heheh -- Yep Sugar Moon and Neil Diamond are both going to be what I call "growers." I saw the size of the Neil Diamonds that got delivered to the Pacific Auction, and just looking at the bareroots gives you a basic idea of the vigor. These plants, which were just grafted two years back were all monster bareroots. Queen Liz, watch out. (Queen Liz was always a big lusty bare root in its time too). The size of that bare root was not a fluke. Neil the rose is going to be way bigger than Neil the person. Eyes for You, on the other hand, needs a lot of coddling here. And despite it's initial size, I don't think Chipmunk will get much taller -- but will fill out and get wider. Have fun. I got a Neil Diamond from Breck's also, but most everything else I got this year came from the auctions. I think I ended up with 33 newbies, almost all of which were varieties I haven't grown before, except for a couple of old favorites that were somehow made available on Fortuniana rootstock through the Huntington -- don't know how that happened, but I grabbed 'em when I saw 'em (Touch of Class, Oregold, and Sutter's Gold).

I've also been longing for a fringe tree but have never seen it for sale in my area. From what I've read about them they can be grown as either an understory tree or out in the open. My mature dogwood is in decline and needs to be cut down but my young redbud is going strong. I really like both trees. You really lucked out getting what sounds like large trees for free! wow..great 'Steal' uh..buy!! lol. Very nice pieces and I love the colors..You will get to use them for all of the Fall season. It's fun taking your DGKs with you..and they know DGM will allow them to buy almost ANYTHING they want!! lol. I must say though that you were lucky to go back and be able to still buy more...DH & I went to a Flea Market this weekend, and he saw an old camera that he fell in love with, but was unsure about buying it..he is definitely NOT like me..I see it... I like it...I BUY IT!! Well, when he fininally decided to go back to get it...right before his eyes, there was a guy buying it!! And, to boot, the dealer automatically said 'I'll knock of $12 for it'... Well, for the rest of the day that's all DH talked about..how he missed out!! So, I'm so happy for you..you've got to go with your first instinct NOT to mention what your Wallet can Handle!! LOL jane

Dawn, Yes, you may have found the mother-lode we all dream of. Pity, you weren't early enough to bag the cabs, but take what you can get! Anyway, yes, a lot of the parts can be recycled; windows, trim, flooring, stairs, etc., and if you can get permission it might be very cost effective to hire someone who knows how to dissassemble the whole house. To find someone with those skills I'd start with your local historical society, and local house museums, etc. These people maybe able to put you on to people who know how to do this in a way that keeps the materials useable. There may be some help in the phone book, but many demolition people are just rip it/ crush it guys, so they may not be what you want. But there are people who specialize in disassembly of houses. They will come with The tools, skills, and appreciation, and probably most important to the bank, the liability insurance, for the job. Taking out a few cabs is one thing, but when you start to get into structural parts, then you really need to know what you're doing. If you can get this organized, maybe the bank would appreciate a little public applause for allowing you to "save" a building. (Don't go public, 'til you've got it nailed down, though!) If it were me, and I had the storage space, I would save the entire thing, or at least as much as is salvageable. You never know when you're going to be in the mood to add an addition..... Worst case you can re-sell some parts, later. Good luck, and please let us know what happens and how you decide to go. Rescuing a house is probably the dream we all secretly have when we take on one of these structures. Lord knows it would be easier to simply buy a new one, but somehow the older beauties catch our eye and we are hopelessly smitten. To find a salvageable clone, would be a dream come true for most of us! Molly~

What a perfect package!! Everything is very grapey. I'll have to remember that -- wine is a serving of fruit. We should have several every day.

The apron is the very best and as you said, a long-lasting reminder of your swap buddy. What nice personal gift.

The grapes on the napkin rings look like they were dipped in sugar. How sweet.

You will have to try some of the Mama Dip recipes and tell us about them.

Mama's Dips? Can't wait to here about these. Please share. Imagine a whole book devoted to things you can't double dip into? =8>)

Actually, it's Mama Dip - that what she is called, Mama Dip. She's famous for her Southern cooking and not just dips. :)

I ate at Mama Dip when I was in chapel Hill with my sister a couple weeks ago! Yummers! Susan you did an outstanding job. Everything looks just perfect. Love the apron things (I am addicted to aprons, love them) Mae, you got a great package!

I'm so happy it arrived intact! On top of that I am especially pleased that May actually liked what I sent. I do believe I might be a little paranoid (my pardon for the self diagnoses) but how else would you explain the compulsion and anxiety I experienced today tracking the darn thing along with the loss of appetite and well -- indigestion!

Question is would I go through this again. Yes! (It's almost rivials white water rafting for the rush I got when I opened May's e-mail that said she liked her box!)

Another Mama Dip fan here! Great cookbook! The wines sound devine. I'd love to hear about that marinade that starts out sweet then gets hot! The apron is very special. Golden rule...yeah! Enjoy your package!
