OK, some of you may or may not know that I had surgery two weeks ago. I feel so much better today because of my new friend that Gina sent me! Isn't he cute. She wrote in my wonderful card that she couldn't find a bear that had had a colon resection so this cute little guy would have to do. I love him. Yes, I decided this Gotta Get a Gund bear is a he. After all I will be sleeping with him.

Yes, DH and I love to sit on the porch with our morning coffee and contemplate our navels. We now have new Starbucks mugs to enjoy our coffee. I love them and they match my kitchen well!

Your caring written words make me proud to be your friend and you to be mine. Thank you Gina.

I'm still blown away by the support, caring and love I feel on this forum everyday. This is one example of why.

Gina, Thank you for this wonderful swap experience. It will not be one I soon forget.

Danielle, I'm so glad you want the Gold Lace Juniper and I've already got it potted up for you! It's pretty large (I didn't prune it before potting), but it's in a nice, 3-gallon-ish fiberglass/plastic(?) pot I had laying around so it's not heavy. I would love the Navajo Salvia and the trailing Veronica sounds great too. Thanks!

I personally don't think buying seeds for someone else is necessary. Nor is it expected. If you want to, I guess that is fine. I look through other's lists and some are getting 3 things and others are not getting any (from me). But as I see it, others that have things that I don't have, and will have some for them (the person I din't have any for) and perhaps none for someone else. If someone has a short want list they might not get much of anything since we can't fill their wants if they don't want anything. The host will have to fill in the gaps for them with extras seeds, and hope there is something in there that might please this person. If the person with a short list is not sure what they want, perhaps they can be vague and say I like blue flowers that like the shade. Or any flowers, I am new and I have no clue what will grow here yet. Then maybe someone can toss in something that fits that requirement. Personally, I am tossing my extra veggie seeds in the extras baggie. So, if someone that asks for any veggie or any tomato, Fran can fill in with my extra veggies in a fair way. I have no way of knowing if one person needs more seeds and another has an overflowing amount already. But really, I think this should be fun, and as Fran said it is not a one for one thing, just share what you have, and it will all be ok. (really) For example: I once participated in the give to a newbie thing as a newbie gardener. I really did not receive much of anything I could use (mostly flowers). But is was still fun. I kept what I could use and SASE'ed what I did not need. So the seeds found nice homes, even if not mine. All is good. Surprises are fun. Giving is good for the heart, and sole. I hope my interpretation of this Swap is not not way off. Yes I should try starting seeds inside in early spring. I found out out that natural beginnings seeds starter mix is a very good all natural mix from gardens alive. My rutabagas did very well in this mix. I had always thought of starting seeds inside as a northern thing to do. But I guess it is not. We are trying to beat heat and the northerners are trying to beat the frost. I have some soup peas in damp paper towels now to try to give them a early go for it this spring. Last spring direct sowed peas took 3 weeks to come up. So by the time they matured, it was too hot. I'm learning. My garden is on the side of the house were veggies get shade after 2 pm. First year I made the mistake of thinking full sun, I will plant on west of the house. UG. Learned that, that is too much sun for Texas! So this year all will hopefully be better due to: water ditches starting some things under pop bottle cloches Sprouting peas inside living mulch verses dead mulch cover crops over winter reorienting garden beds so sorghum and sunflowers can help shade off the rest of the garden. avoiding overly thirsty crops smaller tomato varieties trying beany things along ground But anyway, time to go to the dentist. I have to realize I am not the only one having garden woes. It is just that since I am a new gardener, all years have been extreme weather years. I have nothing to compare it to. Welcome Pharoh. Thank you so much for sharing those kitchen photos, which of course totally blew me away like everyone else. Being a biologist with a particular interest in thing aquatic, your kitchen was like a dream to me, like a "I've died and gone to heavan" kitchen. My own kitchen is very small and completely lacking in counter space. Since it is a row house, no chance of expanding, lol! I'm a vegetarain too, although no gourmet. I'm basically what I call a "hash cook." I have no patience for manipulating and arranging my food, so I specialize in stews and soups! Also cheap food. I can no more do good phyllo than play the violin, lol! I love eating Indian and Asian food, although I don't cook it that often, I just don't have the ingredients around for it. I seem to specialize in mediterranean cooking, I have yet to find a mediterranean cuisine that I didn't love, most recently I have been doing N. African due to the influence of this forum and one of our virtual dinners. How I envy you living in CA, you have access to all the best ingredients all the time. Welcome, glad you're here! Lpink

I thought I'd close the loop on this thread, since my original intent was to chronicle our adventures with a contractor. We're DIY-ers and this was our first foray into the world of hiring others. We had a few issues come up near the end. Here's what they were and how we resolved them. I strongly believe that the fact that we still owed him $10,000 helped us resolve them without too much trouble. 1. He told us that he could recommend someone to do the soffits and gutters, we told him that was in his bucket to do. He said he hadn't included that in his bid. We referred him to the plans, which were very detailed about what was to be done, and highly specific about which things the owners (us) were doing. The plans were referenced in the contract we had. He groused about it, but we politely but firmly told him we didn't feel responsible if he had overlooked their inclusion in his bid. He called out a sub and got them done. 2. The floors of the addition were not level with the existing house in 3 of the 4 places they connect. Fortunately, the one place they were was where we need to continue existing tile from our kitchen into our breakfast nook, so we were okay there. He told us that they lined up the nook with the existing floor and built it level from there, so the part our sunroom attaches to was not level (subfloors are off 3/8"). The flooring will not be continuous, so we agreed to deal with that ourselves when we refloor the family room. Haven't decided whether to build it up, use a transition, or do some sloping of the floor to graduate the transition. Upstairs the new floor was 1/4" higher than the old floor, and we're continuing existing carpet. There was no excuse for this, IMO, and he said it was because our existing joists had shrunk, and the new ones he used were higher, so what did we expect him to do, plane down the joists? Yup, that's what we would have asked for if he had pointed out the issue. He suggested pulling back the carpet, and putting some leveling compound down. I suggested he do that. He gave us a $200 concession. 3. Change orders: He had 3 add-ons to our contract price. $250 for attaching the transom to the slider (he said normally they come attached, and this was a pain to put together); $125 for some extra cutting in the brickwork (he had told my DH about this); and $250 for hanging 2 sets of french doors. We protested about not being told on the slider/transom (change orders were all to be in writing), but agreed to pay it. Hanging the french doors was in the plans, so we once again referred him to those, and he withdrew the charge. Soooo, bottom line, we paid him $40,175 for the beautiful shell he built, plus we bought the windows and doors, which totalled around $6,000. Hopefully we can eke out the inside so the total comes in under $50,000 for the 500 square feet we added. And here are our final outside photos. We got hit by the remnants of Hurrican Ike that blew through the midwest, and it stood up like a champ, shingles and all. We plan to take Thanksgiving week off and do a blitz on the inside then to finish it up for the winter. And next spring a new deck....

Renee, I'm two weeks and 3 days from surgery date. The first 4 days, I had this wonderful solution called Dextrose and Normal Saline plus some Potassium through an I.V. in the top of my wrist. Whoooweee! Let me tell ya cher' that was some good stuff! Then the next five days I had broth and jello. The next week I moved on to baked chicken, mashed potatos and that sort of thing. I'm now *almost* back to my normal diet. I haven't tried chips and salsa yet! I think I'll wait until next week to give my colon a workout!

I may need your navel soon ;-)

Heck, if you get tired of your naval, we could all just rotate and you could stare at EVERYONE'S naval. Then again, that might not be such a good idea....

What a cute little bear. I'm glad to hear you are at least eating potatoes and chicken, I'd starve to death on that jello stuff. Ewwww.

I thought he was pretty darn cute too - so did Odo - he loves stuffed toys but he can't have them becauce he systematically kills and dismembers them, eyeballs, ears, noses, then limbs, then stuffing. Hate to see what he would do to a possum or gopher!

Hope you're back to eating tasty foods soon Karen.

Antonio Banderas? Too girly. I ordered a Clint Eastwood but he scared me so I sent him back!

LOL Gina! Does Odo know that you talk behind his back like that? Some little hunting dogs just don't know they're not supposed to kill something that was never alive in the first place! No mam...Odo with a possum or gopher would not be a pretty sight!
