WANTED: Summer Time, Summer Time, Summer Time Swap....

I know that some of you have been very patiently waiting for a Summer Swap. So here it is.

Limit is three items and the theme will be "Summer Time". You can be as creative as you wish with this open Theme. Patio Dining, Grilling, BBQing, Picnicking, are just a few ideas to shape your theme around. Although the limit is three items an item can be a set of anything that naturally comes in sets. ie, place mats typically come in sets of 4 or more, cocktail plates, wine glasses, ice cream bowls, salad bowls, candles, etc.....

Same rules as the last couple of swaps.

In order to participate you must be an active participating member of the Cooking Forum for at least three months or have participated in a previous swap. Although I hate to put a number on the times someone needs to have posted, active means more than 20 times since March 1st, 2007. Most members prefer to send and receive from people that they have come to know through participation. If you don't qualify for this swap, please continue to post so that you can play in the "Fall Swap".

You must commit to spending at least $30.00 on your swap box. The cost of Shipping is EXTRA.

Mail your gift box on or before the "Mailing Date" (Friday July 6th, 2007)

Once the packages have started to arrive please try and participate on some of the follow-up threads.

Now, I know that many of you like to "Cheat". I've been guilty of it too. But based on some of the emails I've received I am asking everyone to please stick to just "Three Items". So, if you want to wrap your gifts in tea towels or antique linens then send a set of tea towels and count them as one item.

If you are interested in playing please sign up as soon as possible, between now and Thursday June 7th (6:00PM).

I have Friday off this week and I will try to get the names matched up and the emails out by Friday night.

One crop per year, if you are lucky....;-) You don't need to spray insecticide after harvest unless you see a specific issue. Usually it's just the fruit that needs a set schedule. You should check the insecticide to be sure it's what you need, cleared for fruit, and what the preharvest interval is usually listed in days before harvest. Don't spray closer to harvest than that interval.

Pretty, and definitely "different"-looking, great accent plant. What conditions do alliums like? I have success with regular ol' garden chives in average soil, part shade - would the allium bulbs like the same conditions? (aren't they related?)

Are there forums for each state? I can definitely keep up on the watering & mulching, no problem. I have a Hydrangea coming in this week, but it will be planted in a spot that gets filtered sun. I have to run to Walmart in the morning, and I know I'll come home with more plants! lol. They put the nursery by the dog food. They know they got me. :) I've actually bought some nice plants from them this year. In a rural area, beggars can't be choosers.

Mary, It is amazing how little I shop now (online or off) that we live out in the boondocks. There's just almost no place I want to go badly enough to spend all the time driving there and back when there's always so much else to amuse me at home. It is just as well. The money I used to spend out shopping at the mall (conveniently located midway between my place of employment and our house when we lived in Ft Worth), well, that now is money spent on the garden and on food preservation supplies....and I am much happier now than I was then. Our idea of a big shopping excursion is to drive down to the metroplex, go to CostCo, get gasoline at the CostCo station, then go next door to the Steak and Shake place for lunch and then head home. On the way home, we'll stop at Sam's Club in Denton if there is anything they have that we need and which CostCo does not carry (often it is certain supplies for the VFD), and then if we can think of anything we didn't get at one of the big warehouse clubs, I pop into the Wal-Mart next door to Sam's to get it. Our final stop is a Lowe's or Home Depot if we need anything they carry. It sounds like a long day, but we do it all rather quickly....bam, bam, bam. In and out of each store quickly, getting only what is on our list and zipping on to the next place. The whole time I'm thinking of what I could be doing if we were at home. There's always so much work in the garden and kitchen calling out to me. Because the garden provides so much of our food, we buy a lot less food than we once did which further shortens the shopping trips, other than buying he kinds of things we need to can or to preserve our food in some other way. Malls just don't hold the same attraction for me that they once did. I'm too busy to spend time in them. Maybe once every month or two, we add Central Market to the list to pick up a few favorite items that are hard to find. After even a half a day down in the D-FW metro area, I'm ready to go home and to go back into hibernation. Johnny, That's so true. One of the things that drives me crazy is how much fossil fuel is used to ship food not just across the country but around the food. The average food item in a grocery store travels at least 1500 miles to get to the store. The average home-grown food we love travels 150 feet at most from our garden to our kitchen. gotta say no, two times in a row! wah!

It's just too busy this time of year. End of school, cabin at State Park, Out of town guests - I may not get anywhere to shop. And there's not really very good shopping at State Park - lol. I could send bug spray and the makings for s'mores!

Lori, same situation here... life's just been crazy and the summer doesn't look like things are going to slow down any. I'm really looking forward to seeing these swaps, and look forward to the fall swap.
