My package arrived, my package arrived, and I don't know who's more excited, me or my kitties!

Two of my kitties are eager to see what they got from Nina.

Much to my delight, Nina went on a shopping spree at Trader Joe's for me, and put together a "gift basket". I've long had Trader Joe's envy, but no longer. She sent me a sampling of her favorite things from there, including 2 delicious sounding vinegars - White Balsamic and Orange Muscat Champagne Vinegar, plus some Mango Ginger Chutney and some Olive Tapenade spread - 2 things I've never had before. Yes, I admit it, I've never tasted Chutney or Tapenade, but I'm sure looking forward to it. Who doesn't like Chocolate? She really nailed it with Espresso Chocolates and with chocolate dipped chocolate chip cookies. I've already gotten into both, and after eating that Espresso chocolate candy am hoping I'm not up all night! (it'll be worth it, they're delicious!)

But wait, there's more! She also sent me a set of Fiesta Ware Ramekins. (I forgot to mention these in my email to you - sorry!) I love Fiesta Ware, also, and have a set of plates, with hopes of collecting more. You nailed it!

Not finished yet. She sent a beautiful set of serving spoons/servers, which will come in so handy. They are elegant, and I plan to use them next time I entertain, or maybe even sooner.

She didn't disappoint my kitties, either. They got some twisties to play with, but I think they're more interested in the box, and have already had fun jumping inside it. But what's more special than ever, she remembered my grandson, Christopher. He got his own gift, and Thomas the Train toy. I can't wait to share it with him when I get to see him. Finally, and this has me probably the most excited of all, she sent me some of her own recipes. One for French Bread and one for home made Manicotti, made the real Italian way. I love Italian food, and am loving exploring bread baking. I can't wait to make both her recipes, and keep making them till I've mastered them. I just may have to keep trying over and over again...;-)

What a great box. In one of my swaps I had someone help out on my TJ's envy. Their food and snacks are the best. I love the ramekins, I have 32 place settings of fiesta ware and would love a set of the ramekins to add to my collection.

First and foremost... Congratulations, Daddy! Imagine that... your own little Co-pilot! We've become such a close knit little family here, that I find myself unable to stop a few tears of joy for you and your wife! :-) You are both truly Blessed! What wonderful news! Oh, my... I suddenly find myself at a loss for words... give me a second or two... I'll recover quickly! As a step-mother, I missed out on the pregnancy and the infant stages of my three... my youngest was 5 when I joined the family. You have so much to look forward to, Ryan! You've begun the ultimate journey in life... that of parenthood... and while it comes with an undue amount of stress and worry, it also brings unfathomable love and joy! I missed quite a bit by not having my own babies, but God has a plan for us all... my three needed a mother, and I needed those three children to teach me about life, as well. There is no greater bliss than looking at your newborn child for the very first time, and sharing the birth experience with your partner in life... I got a little taste of that feeling as I held my newborn granchilden for the very first time! I thought my heart would jump right out of my chest! Anyway... you've been in training for some time now... as a patient gardener, nurturing your bulbs and plants! That's all going to pay off really soon, if not even now! Hug your wife every day, and be understanding of her current hormonal condition... oh, my... this is exciting! My very best to you and your wife... you'll be in my thoughts and prayers. And, of course... mum's the word. Next on the list... I'm sorry, Ryan... I didn't realize you already had lights! That's good to know! I don't recall you mentioning them, though you could have... my memory doesn't work like it used to! I have one suggestion, though... as much as your plants need all that light, they also need some darkness to complete the photosynthesis process... I would recommend giving them about 14-18 hours of light per 24 hour period, followed by the remainder with the lights off. I just picked up a two pack of light timers at Meijer's for about $9... a good investment. They're for seed starting in the basement. My lights go on at about 5am, and go off at about 11pm, or thereabouts. Haitidoc... you are correct that the propane heater is not vented, but it's a very dry heat! There's no moisture from it, at all! The humidity level in our apartment fluctuates between 28% and about 33% during the winter months... which is very low. I try to keep a few pans of water around to help, and I mist the plants that require more humidity... but I really need to get humidity trays made in sizes decent enough help the entire plant alcove maintain a better level of humidity. I, too, have a Ponytail Palm! It's always been one of my favorite plants, and probably what got me interested in bulbous plants to begin with! Beaucarnea recurvata, I believe it is. Mine was purchased in a 2" pot, and the base was a little marble sized thing! It's now about the size of a baseball, and continues to gain size every year... a very interesting plant, to be sure! I would love to see a photo of yours! 12' is very tall, and 400 pounds is huge! It must really be something to see! We really have a diverse group here... pilots, surgeons, floral designers, housewives... and many more, from all over the world... and soon, we'll add new Daddy to that list! I think gardening is both an outlet and a huge help for each of us. It teaches patience, helps us relieve stress, gives us exercise, and satisfies our need to nurture. We're all very lucky to be able to garden, and to share our experiences with like minded people! Once again, I'm overjoyed to hear your news, Ryan! This year, 2009, is going to be a very good year! I am referred to as "the tick magnet" in my household. It is not uncommon for me to walk across the lawn, spend 10 minutes in the veggie garden, and come in with a tick. I've gotten so I can spot a wood tick sitting on the top of a plant, waving its little legs and waiting to grab hold. I'm going to repeat what I said in the post from last fall that Claire linked. I live on an old farm with a mix of field, brushy growing-up field, and woods. I use bug dope with DEET, though I put it only on my clothing and I don't always use it. I own several pairs of the pyrethrin impregnated socks and I tuck my pant legs into them. (Along with my bug net during black fly season I usually look pretty dorky when I am out in the garden.) I don't really worry about ticks because during the height of the season I might find 6 or 8 on me over the course of a day, but I do take them seriously. Instead of worrying, I do a complete visual and touch check whenever I come into the house in the spring and fall. Clothes get stripped off and examined along with my body. I again do a complete visual and fingertip check at bedtime every night (until it gets too cold for the ticks to be active) standing nekkid in front of a mirror so that I can see places like under my arms and the middle of my back, etc. in case I missed any the first time around. I also comb my hair with a comb having close-set teeth and do a careful touch examination of my entire scalp. Clothing I take off doesn't go into the bedroom. I view that nightly 15 minutes as the dues I pay for being able to get out beyond the lawn areas at my house. When we first moved here I used to freak out about getting a tick, but there are so many (mostly wood ticks, though there are some deer ticks) that I just don't have the energy to get worked up about them. I'd rather put the energy in to doing careful checks afterwards since it takes a day or more for a tick to get seated and spread disease. I do this check religiously, every single night, even if I have not worked in the garden. It's part of my bedtime routine, like brushing my teeth. It is my understanding (and fits in with my observations here) that rodents are a large part of the cause of the "deer" (more accurately referred to as "black-legged") tick problem, so the tick tubes, which target the application of permethrin specifically to rodents, make good sense. I haven't used them, however, and studies vary in their evaluation of effectiveness. Last season was the first we had appreciable numbers of black-legged ticks, so we are just starting serious consideration of management for them. I haven't previously seen reference to nematodes as good for controlling ticks, so I did some reading. It seems like around here they aren't too effective since nematodes live in the soil, and when are ticks are in or on the ground, it's too cold for the nematodes to be effective. They are also more effective on adults that the nymphs that often spread disease. However, I did come across a fungus that it supposed to be better in this part of the country, Metarhizium anisopliae, that has met with EPA approval for tick control. Unfortunately, it appears to still be in the product development stages. As others have mentioned, keeping areas with brush or long grass mowed will help reduce shelter areas for ticks, and reducing areas like stone walls where rodents hide will help as well.

Thanks, guys! My wife is actually a little nervous about the magazine coverage, because she doesn't want everyone in town calling me up and wanting me to help them with their gardening problems! Of course, I'd love to do that, but I do have a bunch of projects at home she wants me to focus on. I'm finishing our basement right now, which is definitely cutting into garden preparation time this season, although I did manage a few hours to prune the fruit trees on Saturday. Thank you all for your comments! I had just needed to vent and I felt better after I wrote it all down. It's just such a stressful situation and to have this girl's mom calling me as well, leaving messages, is just...I don't know. I think you are very right...having her stay in a hotel is a very good idea. My first instinct is to just have her go home if she decides she can't control the things she says, but underneath the hurt I feel, I know that's probably the right thing. I know I definitely wouldn't go to a hotel, if only for the simple fact that it's Christmas and I have small children - 6 and 4 years - and they are greatly anticipating Santa tonight. :) But I did leave this summer when I knew she was coming and I guess that's kind of the same thing, although I went to visit my family and not a hotel room. But honestly, I did feel some resentment over it but tried to put it in it's place. My husband and I had some big fights over this because that's exactly how I felt - why should I have to leave my own home because this 'girl' can't control herself? My husband would only say - Well no one is making you leave! But I think that just misses the whole point when my only options were to stay and suffer through the poison this girl emits or leave. Anyway, in the end, I just decided that this was bigger than me and that for him to reestablish a relationship with his daughter was important for him. So I left and it was ok I guess. This girl has never wanted anything to do with my children. Before we had children she would say all the time that if we ever had kids, she would never acknowledge them as her siblings and that they would be nothing to her. But now, years later, she is beginning to say that she wants to get to know them. She's only seen my older son once or twice when he was younger and she's only seen my youngest when he was a baby, as she's not been back to our home since. HOWEVER, she wants a relationship with them without me being around. She asked my husband if it would be possible to spend time alone with my kids without me being around. Fortunately my husband told her that that would not happen under any circumstances - I guess he knew I would really go ballistic if he told her anything other than that. It made me feel good to hear that he told her that our kids are a package deal. I want the best for my kids and I know that one day I will not be around and that these girls will be some of the only family they have. I have never said a bad word about either of the girls in front of my kids, no matter how I've felt and I never will. But right now, this girl is just too filled with bitterness and hatred and there is nothing in this world that would make me leave my kids alone with her for 5 seconds. Honestly, as bad as this sounds, I wish I could just make this girl vanish as if she's never existed. Oh well. Thank you again for all your thoughts! Sally, you scored! I have never seen FiestaWare ramekins. The colors are great and those serving spoons are gorgeous and you can't go wrong with TJ's! I have to go back now and look at everything - I really want those spoons! Oh, and the recipes! Nina, you covered all the bases - I love your choices.

Ahem. Sets. The ramekins were a boxed set, as were the servers. I did take some leeway with the Trader Joe's stuff but (thanks to careful forum sleuthing) I knew that Sally didn't have a TJs near her & that she had really wanted to visit one. So technically the TJs stuff is a gift basket, without the basket. I'm so relieved that nothing broke!

What I didn't know was that Sally like Fiesta ware. I have a ton of it & I just love how cheerful it is & how durable. The ramekins are so handy that even the non Fiesta smitten can find lots of uses for them.

As for the "extras"- I remember how excited Sally was, hopping a plane & hoping to make it in time for her grandbaby's arrival & how nicely he cooperated. My son loves his Thomas trains & started playing with them when he was about a year old so technically the train isn't for Sally. And the twist ties? Those are my tiny grey cat Gremmie's favorite toys. She will stalk & hunt those things all day & night. I find them all over the house.

Sally, I am so glad that you like everything & that you made it safely. I wrote out the extended directions for the french bread because you said that you had never made it before but I use the basic recipe for pizza dough all of the time & it's wonderful. The manicotti are so easy, any questions just email me. My gardenweb email is old, Ann T has my current one.

And I'm especially glad that the cats approve! I had a hard time keeping Gremlin out of the empty box, too.

Sally, that Orange Muscat Vinegar is wonderful. I make a homemade dressing with that stuff that will knock your socks off! Peppi keeps my pantry full of it because I don't have a TJ's anywhere close to where I live.

Oh, good, I've been wondering how best to use the orange muscat vinegar. I've already put the balsamic vinegar to use in my salad for lunch today. I mixed it with some cilantro pesto I made the other day, and topped my spring greens with it. Different, but tasty. I can't wait till my lunch break!

I love that swap package. The ramekins are really special. (course, if you looked in my cupboards you would find tons of mini things)
And I especially just LOVE the accounting system, LOL. We are a pretty ingenious group at getting around those "limits." Nina, you did a good job. I am sure you had fun putting that one together, and you did it well.

Aww Nina, you did real good! That's a super swap box, and it's obvious that you did some good sleuthing since it's all perfect for Sally. The Fiestware ramekins are very versatile, I have 4 yellow ones and wish I had more. Not having a TJ's anywhere near us in Florida, I think the basket of yummies from there is a superb choice! I sure do love those serving spoons Sally, and they will serve anything like salads, pasta, etc. with style. Enjoy it all, and tell those of us with "Trader Joes Envy" what you like the best.

Lovely swapbox! I really like the colours of the fiestaware ramekins. I am going to have to do some more research on fiesta ware. I am in dire need of dishes and all the ones I buy just seem to chip to darn easily, or the plates crack. Great bunch of stuff from TJ's! You'll have fun sampling.

That is a great package! I have a set of servers similar in design to those, they were my Grandmothers. I love the shape of the "bowls" on the serving pieces.
The rami's are gorgeous! I love how bright they are!

Well I love TJ's and I think you've everything I haven't tried yet! LOL

I wouldn't wait for company to use the salad servers. I like to use things like that whenever I have salad in a large bowl, which is not often enough.

Did she also send the Thomas Train?

Oh yes, the ramekins are beautiful, I love the colors, but the serving spoons was really nice, I think I like them best.

TJ's is great fun, isn't it? We bought snacks there several times while we were in California and when I go to Elery's we drive into An Arbor, less than an hour, and shop just for the heck of it.

I also love the orange muscat vinegar but the chocolate, oh my, that's the best.

What a great bunch of stuff! I wish I had a TJ's close, too. I've been a couple times when traveling, and EJ sent me some stuff - but it'll be a long while before they put one close enough to me to be convenient - lol.

I was gonna say that Jessica started this "bunch of stuff from TJs = one item" -- so whatever, LOL!

Very nice assortment from TJs. The ramekins will be very useful. I use them for "mise en place," among other things. The spoons are very unique. Another smart shopper Nina!

It's funny how our pets get so nosy around a package.

Wonderful package! That Orange Muscat vinegar is one of my all-time favorite things from TJ's. Oooooo....Fiesta Ware - always useful and beautiful. Lovely serving spoons too.

Someone else already said it so I'm going to say it again.....cheaterpants!! LOL Okay, really, that is a super swap package that I know Sally will enjoy for a long time. Nina, you went all out with this one for sure. If our resident "rat" loves this Muscat Orange Vinegar...along with others...lets just say I'm jelous and envious at the same time. Wish we had TJ's down here in mhy neck of the woods.
