Hey ShaunÂhope you received my earlier email .

"an apple a day keeps the doctor away"-- & it worked--- havenÂt seen a doctor all day ! But what I did see was a marvelous box--- waiting on my back stoop when I got home from SILÂsÂBIG box with a red top.

And inside : three more red packages

Package #1 was a delightful cookbook "the Apple Cookbook"; full of great sounding recipes and facts about the history of apples in the US , varieties and which is best for what & info on the Heirlooms at the oldest agricultural research station in the countryÂthe USDA Plant Generic Resources Unit in GenevaÂ(about 25 miles west of me).

Package #2 held something IÂve been going to purchase for doing Applebutter & freezing applesauceÂit will be a big help giving the darn RA--- an apple peelerÂyahoo !

Package #3Âa stunning ceramic Apple pie plateÂcomplete with leaves & stem , and such a cheerful red !

Thank you so much , Shaun Â IÂll get lots of use from these wonderful things & think of you when IÂm filling up that pie plate .

Very nice. I see lots of apple pie in your future Diane. Those apple peelers have always fascinated me, let us know if it works as good as on the cooking shows. Great idea Shaun!!

Thanks Don for sharing your insight and experience with me. I am prepared to prune like it is going out of style. My back yard is not very challenging to me right now with not much to do in it vegetatively. Even my garden I expanded this year had been very maintenance-free. I think I only pulled half a dozen weeds out since April. I've worked on creating a compact garden and a berry bed in the inside-side of the fence. My back yard is small and only extends about 24' back from the corner of the house. I fenced most of it in. I left some space on the outside of the east side where these trees are going. The soil is especially murderous on that side of the yard. I suspect when this house was constructed a little less than 3 years ago that the access road for the neighborhood construction was through that area. I notice contractor people here like to spread heaps of plentiful limestone rocks around construction sites for their machinery/keep mud down. It gets compacted and pressed down with that heavy equipment as houses are built. Then after a house is built it appears topsoil is added on top for sod, but it is never spread evenly. This explains why the west side of the yard is much easier to put shovel in than the east side. All my neighbors complain about their yards being the same way. Here's an example of what happened to all the rocks dug up in my back yard: I dug the final hole for that Mcintosh this evening and the soil was considerably easier to dig in. I had watered the spot where I wanted the tree a couple times this week and notice before doing that.. that the grass was more lush there. I can visually see where I will have a chore digging and where it will be relatively easy with not nearly as much shovel aerobics to pry out boulders and stones 'glued' into the ground. I hope these trees, as close as they are grow like wildfire because I want more privacy in my little yard. Notice in my picture the houses at the top of the picture... There's always people staring down at my wife and I from those balconies/roadway. We'd much rather they stare at fruit trees. I hope they grow 20' tall. ;) I will be sure to let you know how my Mcintosh grows (or dies). Last winter it was always colder on that side of the house. The path between the houses adjacent to mine act as a wind shaft to convect cold air along that area. Maybe that will be beneficial to the Mcintosh. Time will tell I guess. I will plant the Mcintosh probably tomorrow. I want to mix in some of that fertilized tree/shrub mix with our limely clay soil as I had for the two other trees. I could cram one more tree along the fence, but I have a white pine in the inside that should complete the blocked view (someday). I say I don't mind pruning now, but I may be saying different in 3-5 years eh? :)

Good luck. I have one who will eat any live plants, and another that doesn't descriminate between live and silk LOL. I'll think I found a safe spot to put a faux arrangement, and it seems like it is being left alone. Then one day I will walk by and notice every single fake bloom has been stolen from the top of it's stem. ARGH! Of course, I can't help but laugh and that doesn't really help, does it? Sometimes she will just take a piece here and there, not really enough to be noticed and I will move something (like a case of water on the basement floor) and find a little stash of assorted silk leaves and plastic buds and things. And pony tail holders. Lots of pony tail holders. So now I live with no plants, or plants in inaccesible odd places.

Jali, when I emptied my rain gauge on Wednesday it had 1.4” in it. When I emptied it yesterday morning it had another 2.4” in it! Flood of '65, indeed! I emailed Barb last nite to let her know I had arrived safely—tense, but safe—and I mentioned the Flood of '65 to her! She's not old enough to remember it, but I am! It rained, like this time, for a week or whatever and everything was saturated—and then, like you said, it DUMPED and that was all they wrote! All the bridges in/out of Denver on the west side of town but ONE washed out, including one that was just a couple years old and had been built for a “500-year flood!” I have pics of a span of that bridge laying in the middle of the Platte! Huge sections of I-25 and the train tracks between Denver and the Springs washed out! I still have the newspapers from right after it with all the pics! But I hadn't stopped to think that this was the 50th anniversary of it!!! Cherry Creek Dam was still new back then, and there was near panic on the news that it was going to break—they were releasing water as fast as they could. I lived in an apartment about a half a block from Speer and we were listening to the radio so we'd know when to RUN—and then the power went out! I'm still here—so, no, it didn't break! And 25th anniversary of the Limon tornado! Wow! Some years to remember! Guess you remember that one well! What I remember was I was watching TV weather and all of a sudden the radar went down! Switched channels, and no radar! Switched again—nobody had radar anymore! That's when we knew it was “serious!” If the Limon radar was wiped out—what else in Limon was wiped out! Wasn't long and the channels were picking radar up from the airport, and that's when most of them switched to doppler! Memories! I've been watching Denver radar today, and the forecast, and at least it looks like this is about the end of it for right now, so, hopefully, no repeat of '65! Rick off hand I don't know anyone that would be interested. Bob should be returning to the forum very soon, I know he is a fan of Pachyform plants. The Pachy seeds did real well Rick. A few had difficulty shedding their casings but germination was good on all except the Baroni. Those didn't come up but I am not fretting because I have a nice crop of newborns! I have an apple peeler like that and really love it, just the thing when you have a bushel of apples staring at you. Diane I'm sure you'll give it lots of use. The pie plate and apple book look great too!

I like that red color too, and I have one of those peelers, even the same brand, I love it.

Diane, you're so gonna love that peeler when apple season comes around. Mine also slices, so it makes pie a snap, or slices for canned apple pie filling or for sauteed apples to go with a pork roast. Ashley even uses it just to peel and slice an apple for eating, but I think she just likes to play with it, LOL.

That is one of the neatest themes. I liked my cupcake theme and now an apple theme. Unfortunately my theme, is stuff that fits in a box.

I don't know what I would do with out my apple pealer, Last year the late frost and freeze left me with no apples to can, but the year before I think I canned 100 pints of applesauce in all sorts of combinations. Glad I did because Hayden just loves the stuff.

Now I want the apple pie plate, you don't think 20 pie plates is too many to want another one do you??

What a great swap package! Love the colour of your apple pie plate. The cookbook looks interesting, you'll have to show us what you make from it. The apple peeler is great for peeling potatoes and then frying them as well!

Ok, I have to break down and buy one of those peeler/slicer/corers. For the two or three times a year I make apple pies in bulk, it would be so worth it. Especially hearing the testimony from all of you apple experts:-)

Diane, that's a mighty nice group of swap gifts you have there. Shaun, you did really good! The theme is a real pleaser, since pretty much everyone loves apples! The cookbook looks very interesting, and the pie plate will brighten up Diane's kitchen with it's cheery colors.

Last night we watched A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy, and Woody Allen peeled an apple using a similar apple peeler. It made me think of this package.

What a cheery package! That apple peeler looks like a real machine -- you can plow thru tons of apples with that.

A theme! I love it, and how fabulous...right down to the wrapping. The plate looks so pretty! And I love my apple peeler...except that I bought mine with potatoes in mind. I know that it doesn't go with the theme but maybe if you try red potatoes?

OK I admit it. I suck at presentation. I just throw my stuff in a box. No wrapping. I even had my ebay seller wrap the item so I wouldn't have to do it.

So I am in awe and jealousy of those who DO take the time to make a nice package; kudos to you!

Shaun you did great with a perfect package for Diane. I know she has the RA and I think that apple peeler is just the ticket!

ROFL about not seeing a doctor today....what would doc say to that?
