From Cathy (Mustangs). Cathy's box would have arrived on Friday had it not been a Statutory Holiday here in Canada. And Monday was also a holiday for Federal employees.

Cathy's timing and gift couldn't be more perfect. I've been making Moe his own salad dressings. Mixing them up before I leave for work so that he can make himself a salad for lunch. And I was running out of vinegar. Moe was thrilled when he saw what Cathy sent. Not only Heirloom Balsamic but also a Fig Balsamic and a lovely bottle of white truffle oil. I'm going to have to hide the Truffle Oil from Matthew when he visits. He loves it so much I'm surprised that he doesn't drink it.

For those that don't know, Cathy is the vinegar queen. I think she posted recently that she has over 30 bottles of different vinegars. So this truly is a "Favourite" swap box.

Cathy, thank you so much. I will be putting your gift to very good use and Moe thanks you too. He is really looking forward to his next salad.

Oh that's a wonderful package! White Truffle Oil?????????? Ann you are so lucky!

I had french fries made with white truffle oil one time and they were very very delicious. I think I need to go back to that restaurant.

Ann I know you'll enjoy the vinegars and the truffle oil.

Oooh good gift! Cathy sent me a bottle of the fig balsamic in a swap. I love it and use it as a reduction sauce for pork and for fish. A salad with pears and pecans and blue or feta cheese would be lovely with it as a dressing.

Enjoy, but I know you will! Good going Cathy!

Sorry, but I haven't been on the computer for several days, so am just now seeing your posts. Jolana, I placed the seeds in a tray filled with moist seed starter mix, then slightly covered with more. Kept them misted and out of direct sun until they sprouted. Then I moved them to where they got a couple of hours of morning sun, and watered regularly. The next spring, they had developed bulbs about the size of bb's. I then transplanted to individual 4" pots with regular potting soil, watered and fertilized with all the other pot plants. The second spring, they were about the size of a dime, and I moved them to 6" pots. After transplanting, I added about a half inch more soil to kinda stabilize the bulbs because they were completely above ground. Continued with normal watering and fertilizing. The third spring the bulbs were about the size of ping pong balls. I had just built a new bed, so transplanted them into the ground, leaving the shoulders of the bulbs exposed. This year, the fourth, three of the bulbs are the size of baseballs, and have bloomed. The rest are a bit smaller and probably won't bloom till next year. I started 12 seeds, and have 9 now. The three that have bloomed are the same, but they aren't what I bought. The seeds, bought on eBay were from a huge, clear pink amaryllis. Hope this helps. Jim

I don't know how I missed this, but I just saw it today. How wonderful to receive original art - and it's so beautifully framed. I also love the trivet - very clever design. I may have to get one of those fish turners myself - that looks extremely practical. I'm not really familiar with chestnuts - I'm not sure I've ever had any, other than water chestnuts. Are they related? The ceramics are beautiful too - great package! Lars

The usual process is to take a few of those off the tree that haven't opened yet, and put them in a paper bag. Eventually they will open and the seeds wll scatter in the bag. If you are doing this because you think it is fun, go for it. However Blue Spruce are a mass produced tree and it is usually less trouble to buy small saplings.

Very special indeed! I've learned from the generous people here how delicious a salad can be with special oils and vinegars. That fig balsamic vinegar may be the only 'figgy' item for me! Don't like them otherwise, but that looks and sounds interesting.

That looks pretty good to me. I also love lots of different vinegars. Hmmmm. I don't like figs, but would I like fig vinegar Cathy? Is it real sweet like figs?

ROFLMAO.

Why? Because that fig vinegar has made the rounds here from Cathy, and everyone who has a bottle should be the envy of those who don't! (yes I have one too) Sherry, even if you don't like figs, that stuff is divine. I just opened the bottle to inhale it. Ah heaven.

Now I'm craving spinach salad....

Nice job Cathy, you are contributing to the Thibeault's health if they eat more salads because of your gift.

These vinegars and oil look like a special treat.
I make Ina Gartens Broccoli and Garlic...I bet they'd be excellent in that or green beans or a corn salad or oh, just lots of things!

I've had fig vinegar but never the fig balsamic, it sounds good.

I see a lot of really good salads in Moe's future, lucky guy that he is.

Ann - that white truffle oil will go really well sprinkled on some fresh pasta or drizzled on risotto! The fig balsamic on berries.....mmmmm Enjoy!

I've never had truffle oil or truffles period. It does sound intriguing as does the vinegars.

Mmmmmm, yum! Those vinegars sound so good. I've never had truffle oil, and I've been scared to try it because I'm afraid I'd love it! What a very special treat. There are so many possibilities for the vinegars and oil. Great gift, Cathy. Lucky Moe, I mean Ann!

How old is the vinegar? It looks like it has been aged a good while and therefore must be very thick and sweet. I'm just about out of my best balsamic vinegar and need to replace it, but the price just keeps going up. I love truffle oil also.

Lars, I'm sure I'm not the balsamic connoisseur that you are but this brand is my favorite fig and regular vinegar. I have tried probably 5 brands of fig and none are as rich as this.

OT: Those uneven labels on the bottles (the picture above) are making me crazy. Well, not crazy but uncomfortable.

most excellent gift, cathy and ann. it's one i would have no problem finding wonderful things to do with each of those bottles of goodies.

i love strawberries macerated with balsamic, served over vanilla ice cream and garnished with toasted pine nuts DELISH! and truffle oil drizzled over just fried potatoes and then grate some parmesaen cheese and season with S&P, not to mention drizzled over macaroni, seafood and even a good fried egg. recently i was at a friend's who served a cheese course with honeyed walnuts and fig oil and told us after dinner he made a mistake, it was supposed to be served with figs and drizzed in walnut oil. it was good nonetheless and everyone ate the course.
