WANTED: Shelley did great....

I was out most of the morning and when I got home I hurried to check the mail...my swap package was sitting on the porch! I couldn't wait to get it opened. I almost forgot to take a picture!

First off, I read the beautiful handmade card she enclosed which explained this was a dessert themed package, then perused the copy of Canadian Living magazine (which I had just subscribed to a couple weeks ago, but hadn't yet received), then I got down to business opening packages.

The first thing I opened was a set of magnetic measuring spoons, which by the way, came at a good time as I had them on my shopping list for this weekend! Next opened was a set of very pretty gold color ramekins. I see molten lava cakes being made this weekend. Last, but certainly not least, was a set of gorgeous dessert plates with different fruits. Guess what the lava cakes will be served on!

Shelley, I can't thank you enough for all the wonderful gifts you selected for me. You couldn't have come up with anything more perfectly suited to me!

Such nice pictures!

Now I want to see pictures of MLC's served up on those beautiful plates and ramekins.

Oh how pretty! Everything is wrapped so nice. But those plates, I LOVE them! Gorgeous.

The ramekins are very cute, they look almost like little pumpkins and the spoons are great too...no more hunting through the drawers for the elusive 1/2 tsp measure. Very nice, Shelley!

Really....RRV was never used as a control method nor was it introduced from anywhere. It has been around the U.S. since at least the 1940s. Was it likely spread by the use of multiflora as fences and such? Sure. But being mad about that would make as much sense as being mad 20 years from now if we discover that something we can't currently detect that is found on say Knock Outs, causes all other roses to die. Multiflora as a fence was a conservation idea and it works quite well if the person who uses it is willing to maintane it. Have there been things introduced that back fired? Sure. But the list of invasive and devasting ecosystem criters that have come here on their own is a far longer list: Japanese Beetles Fire Ants Raspberry Ants Africanized Bees Cactus Moths Asian Citrus Psylid Mistle toe Water Hyacinth Snake Heads Armored Catfish Formosen Termites etc etc etc. Do Chemicals have a place? Yes. Should they be used exclusively or all the time-probably not but that is your decision. The above linked article was an uninformed paper from 2000 and I haven't been able to find any evidence that people ever used RRV as a control method. He was writing as it showed promise as a possible control method. In case you don't realize how this works currently, they test it extensively in controlled situations prior to using it as a commercial control. They have been testing a parasitic wasp to control fire ants for over a decade and still haven't released them.

I just didn't get to do everything I wanted to do this spring but I was happy with what I did get done. Planted lots of new stuff that was similar (only improved) from old stuff I used to have and that died out with all the moving of plants necessary with my hardscape budgets. I just didn't get all the seeds started that I had hoped to do. Well, Great intentions and everything just never gets done. I am not going to have any self seeded lupines. I deadheaded them all right after they bloomed. I wanted my plants to get established, not stress themselves making seed. But I just love the lupine area. It perfect there in front of some daylilies. The lupines make the spring show and the daylilies the summer show. The lupine folliage looks good there in front of the daylilies all year long. In fact those lupines are growing lots of new leaves and look happy. They do get some shade, which is good in this hot weather. Truthfully, they are in the perfect spot for my yard and garden. I do alsso have that row of the Woodfield hybrids lupines which are an improved strain of Russell hybreds. Those were the tiny plants I bought from Bluestone on half price. They are not so tiny now, growing really well. I put them in another area, this time in the back as this type has taller blooms. I hope it looks great next spring. But these really seem to like there spot also. They look green and lush.

You know, it just dawned on me yesterday that Pat's popovers look far and away nicer than the ones pictured on the popover pan box. And I never thought to check Joy for a popover recipe...guess what I'll be making this weekend? I agree about the clean oven too, btw. If you've been bitten by the Fiesta bug (I feel like a drug pusher!) many stores like Macy's, Kohls, Boscovs & Dillards carry it so that you can see the colors in real life. I'm thinking that Peacock might be perfect with your dishes. Granjan- my husband did about three books and then the firm stopped calling him. I know that the freelance work was slowing down but it's been a few years. I know that he enjoyed it and would do it again in a heartbeat. Personally I thought that his indexes were great and I always half jokingly compliment him on Raising the Bar because I, too, would always complain about the indexes in cookbooks and how bad they were. The one in RtB is ideal! It's like he took all of my complaints to heart. So of course every time I have to look something up in the index I go "wow, this index is fantastic" but I really do mean it. Diana- the only thing that would make me happier than sending you the recipe would be sending you the popovers themselves but I'm afraid they'd be pretty stale by the time they got to you so the recipe it shall be. I'm so happy that my partner likes her stuff! And Pat kindly posted the recipe for the Maraschino cherries over in discussions. It's time for a new batch in our house as well. Nina

Jessy is STILL HAPPY, Terri! I used the blue baker on Friday night...one of them...because I found another exact one at a store by me and now I have a matching set of TWO!!!! And I have your rub recipe printed and taped in my spice drawer to replicate when yours runs out. And I'm using the candle on Thanksgiving. And one of the two dish towels LIVES in my drain board, rotating in the laundry. AND that Tayberry jam is still hidden from my family, none for them, its ALL MINE!!!! Thanks for another GREAT SWAP, Ann! When is the next one?

i've never met a ramekin i didn't like! those are excellent, as are the magnetic measuring spoons and the plates. my kitchen (is presently) fruits, so how perfect would they be?

shelley was my partner in a previous swap and i get plenty of use from the items that she sent me, as i am sure you will, marigene.

Magnetic spoons? Will they stick to all the other metal stuff in your silverware drawer? LOL

I love the plates, those are so darned cute and just the kind of thing for marigene.

I'm looking forward to pictures of stuff on those plates...

Beautiful! I love those plates, and the ramekins, and the spoons are so neat! It looks like they measure both teaspoons/tblsps. and ml's. Is that correct? How cool is that?! What a lovely swap gift, Shelley! Marigene, I bet you'll get lots of enjoyment out of all of gifts.

Marigene, I am so glad you liked your package. I have the same plates but with veggies on them, (but I like the fruit ones better), which is why I got you those ones.
Ramekins are my new favorites and I have them in black, white, and three differant sizes. My new favorite dessert is creme brulee in all differant flavours, and I meant to include some favorite recipes but I forgot, (but I will forward them on to you privately). Those ramekins I liked because the colour matched the colour in your dishes, (so I thought you could use them together), and they looked more rounded not like the typical flat bottomed ones, so I thought they could do double duty as a dessert bowl as well. Plus they were handmade in Portugal and I really wanted to get something that was not factory made, (as I didn't have time to paint something which I was hoping to do). The Measuring spoons I love (my hubby bought me some) because they are metric and non metric measurement, plus they can fit into spice bottles, (and they supported breast cancer with purchase).

This really was a fun swap and probably one of the easiest, so I am so glad you liked my favourites!

I would like some more information about the plates - they remind me of Audubon illustrations. Were they made in Canada? They look nice enough to hang on the wall or display in a glass cabinet. The magnetic measuring spoons are intriguing as well. Nice to have the metric option.

Magnetic measuring spoons? YES! And that they are double sided makes them extra handy.
I'm a ramekin nut and know that the ones Shelley sent will become your favorites Marigene :) And to have dessert plates to match...well a terrific swap package indeed!

I love the measuring spoons because of the cancer support and they fit into spice jars! Marigene's creations will photograph beautifully on all the plates. And who can't use MORE ramekins!!!
