Appropriate and Beautiful - Thank you Lars

It's me! I am the lucky one! I got Lars in a box:) Just a week ago I was asking for help with window treatments and Lars gave me some advise and I responded that I needed a Lars to come help me. Well, this is just as good - better!

I will let the bowls speak for themselves. They are stunning and sexy but yet appropriate! Beautifully hand-crafted and signed by Frank Parker and numbered. I believe they are Maple burl. Can you tell us more, Lars and also advise me on care instructions?

I spent about an hour with chaos going on around me trying to get photos to do them justice! So, Lars - if you have photos please post. I know this is a kitchen swap but these are going to live in the LR. I have a cherry coffee table with walnut and maple inlay. In the middle I have a piece of stone and these are sitting on top. They were born to live in my home:)

Those are the most beautiful bowls ever, Maggie! Lars, you have exquisite taste. Lucky lucky you, Maggie, the bowls will make anything you put in them, or even near them, look stunning.

Where would one find bowls like that?

The bowls are fantastic. When Lars said he was sending one thing I knew it was going to be good. I wish we had some people around here that did work like that. I'd never run out of swap ideas.

Death Valley is a very good vacation place, and so far we've seen lots of French, German, and Japanese tourists, as well as a few Canadians. Saturday we went to Zabriskie Point, Golden Canyon (drive through), and Dante's view - all before lunch. Then we met my friends from Utah, who had to wait to get into their room, and after lunch we went to Rhyolyte and Beatty NV with Mark and Greg. Yesterday we got an early start to go to Ubehebe Crater and decided to stop by Scotty's Castle on the way. We could not get a tour for the inside for an hour an a half, and so we only did the outside self-guided tour, which I felt was enough. Then we went on to the craters, which Kevin and I had explored before, but Mark and Greg made quick work of hiking down and back up the 500 feet of elevation change in the crater. Kevin and I went toward the smaller craters. Next we went to the racetrack on a very bad gravel road that took three times as long as it should have, but we got some great photos there of the "floating" rocks. After that, we decided to make a loop across Hunter Mountain to have dinner in Panamint Springs, instead of turning around and going back the way we came. The six mile road from Teakettle Junction (where we had lunch) was a dead end, but we decided to take the other road, which Kevin and I had taken 12 years ago and almost got stranded in mud from melting snow at the top of the mountain - and we got lost along the way at a "Y" in the road that went to a dead-end at a cliff where there was a dilapidated building and a rusted out 1920s car. To be continued - computer and internet service acting up! Lars ETA: The road we chose to cross Hunter Mountain was closed due to damage from rock slides, floods, and landslides, which removed or covered parts of the road. There was no warning of this from the Teakettle Junction end of this road. Thanks for the warning to stay safe, but it came perhaps a bit too late! Petra, I agree with Mustangs as I don't know why you want this pulled or that you want to stop posting. I saw your smiley and I did one too at the end. You did state just Southern states (even after Mustangs and I posted) and believe me people cook this way all over the US and beyond and like it. You just prefer them a different way which is fine but there is nothing wrong with a person that wants to cook them to "mush" as you call it either. My MIL was born and raised in Pekin, IL and cooks them that way. She is far from the South. Some people have very warm memories of the days of eating that food that their grandmother cooked in the country. Maybe not for you but for others, yes. Those people are gone out of our lives and it's a way to "feel" like they are with us again. Plus, there is nothing wrong with Southern Cooking IMO. I don't cook like that everyday. I think a lot of people watch Paula on TV and think that we eat that way morning, noon and night and that is just not true.

I remember the "down below" convo came up on GW a number of years ago, and a member who has since left the forum was adamant that there's something weird, wrong, and perverse about women who "'scape" down there. I remember being taken aback by the things she said, thinking it such a personal matter, that I couldn't imagine anyone possibly caring about what someone else does to the hair in their nether regions! I still feel the same way. Shave it, wax it, grow it long and strong... whatever one prefers --- and for many, there ARE definite preferences.

Ohhhhh! I just want to feel those bowls all over! Very nice find Lars. I'm sure Maggie is going to use and treasure these for years. I have no idea why you thought they wouldn't be appropriate. You have good taste (and good luck in finding these!)

I keep seeing the word "exquisite" used over & over again in the responses and that's the exact word that came to mind when I saw the pictures. I can't believe how beautiful, how warm, how radiant those bowls are. True treasures.

Oh Wow. Lars you did good. Those bowls are works of art. Love the grain and the colour. I just want to feel their warm smooth surface. Maggie, I know that you are going to have and cherish them for a very long time.

I have to run off to work now - I just checked in this morning briefly and was shocked that Maggie received these bowls already!! I was expecting them to be delivered today or tomorrow.

Maybe you can understand why I had to ship them right away or else want to keep them. For those of you who mentioned touch, I would have to say that the bowls are indeed very sensual to touch. They have a very satiny feel, which is one of the things I like most about them.

Maggie, I included some care instructions with the card - did I forget to include that? The bowls were made by a craftsman in Mendocino County, California, and they are made of California Myrtle burl. I was especially attracted to the burl figuring in the small bowl.

As for being inappropriate - what was I thinking?? They will be perfect for the living room, I think. Maggie, the pictures you posted are great! I don't have any better ones, and I think you did them justice. I'm just glad that you're happy with my choice.

Oh gosh, when I saw Myrtle on the bottom of the bowl, I thought it was the artist's name.

Beautiful, Lars. Did you see the root bowl in Bubbe's kitchen? These remind me of it. So lovely (trying not to use the word exquisite, though it fits).

I should have signed up for this swap!

Those are so pretty and unique. I know as a mama so many things are bought and used just for being practical. But this has form, function and beauty, perfect for a busy mom.

In all the excitement I didn't even notice the letter! I opened the card and read that but somehow missed the letter. Sorry, Lars - I could have given a better description. I just found it right on top of the box. I am even more thrilled to know it is California Myrtle wood. Just makes it more special:)

No problem on the Carnauba wax; I live right next to a surf town with a few surf shops.

Oh man, those bowls are very unique and special. Lars, my hat's off to you for sending one item....a challenge for sure....I'm trying to follow your lead. I've found the one, just wondering if I should add to it????

Maggie, I'm sure they will look great on your table for sure....do put them to use when that special ocassion comes along. I've held out with some of my previous swap items but I did finally use them.

Looks like we are of and running with another great swap.....love it!

Lars, you really started things off with a bang. Those bowls are just gorgeous, truly a work of art.

Those bowls are gorgeous, Lars. I'll have to show them to DH so he gets inspired. He's learning to turn bowls on his lathe. For his first project he started out with a big chunk of wood...it's now about 3" in diameter, lol.
