WANTED: StacyS: I am going to throw me a party!

My boxes are here and in great shape. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! Yes, not 1, but 2 boxes from Stacy and I love my party items.

First, Stacy did a wonderful job of wrapping everything up so that nothing would break and then she wrapped them very pretty too. You will notice that when I first opened the boxes, the card that was enclosed was marked for me to read last. I was sure I knew who sent it but still she had me guessing. And to prove that I waited, there is a photo of everything unwrapped but the card.

You did a great job. In the boxes were a beautiful cheese board made of black slate, four cheese knives/speaders, along with some great dipping oil with balsamic and herbs. To serve the bread and oil, a ceramic leaf shaped dish for the bread and a smaller leaf for the oil. All this can be served with Stacy's favorite Pinot Grigio. And in case the bottle is not fully consumed, a hand carved stopper in African zebrawood. Stacy wrote that this is from a local craftman too.

Plus she sent a gift that I have already started, the book "Chicken Soup for the Cat Lovers Soul". I adore the Chicken Soup books, they always make me smile, laugh and shed a few tears.

Boy, after seeing that I realized that I really, really need to work on presentation, lol. A Lovely swap for sure. I just adore the leaf plates.

Suebot - don't think i'm going to tell you anything that somebody else hasn't said, but since i've had too much experience with deer & rabbits, i figured i'd concur with the remedies that worked for me. i used to live/learned to garden on nantucket and martha's vineyard, where the deer are at least as unreasonably tame and probably more abundant than they are in ct. i've heard stories of people standing 10 ft away from them yelling at them while they chomp on their hydrangea flower buds. one woman i was talking to claimed she saw the deer attacking her dalmation!! anyway, my first thought about your original message was are you sure all damage is due to deer and not rabbits? - when they stand on their hind legs, they can eat quite high - on a couple of my client's properties on the islands, i had more problems with bunnies than deer, especially with my daylilies & echinacea. so, i also found success with the deer away spray products; i can't remember which one i used, but i believe it had garlic & mint in it and i actually liked the way it smelled. the directions said to spray every couple of weeks (??), but i found that i had to spray every couple of days or so & definitely after a rain. it was pretty time consuming. unfortunately, my other success was fencing in the gardens. i just tried to be decorative about it - i used nice cedar posts with caps, bird netting @ 4' high (you can't really see it, so the garden still looks nice), i hung rope along the top of the netting (for a nautical look...). I did throw netting on top of the gardens in the spring until things grew too tall, but i have to admit, the deer hopped in a couple of times (- that would've been a mess i kind of would have liked to see). i now live in maine and have a large cutting garden in my back yard, a good distance from my house and i use the bird netting as the fencing (simply because it was the only fencing i could find that would be high enough in one piece) and it works (doesn't handle snow load, though). i see deer in the back and they walk right around the garden. chipmunks are now my problem. unfortunately, my true feeling is that if the deer want to get to something, they will. sorry to be so lengthy, good luck. just out of curiosity, do you have phlox and is it being eaten - that always gets destroyed the worst for me. -mara

What is the relationship with his office workers and boss? Warm, respectful, friendly? You don't have to be outside work friends to enjoy celebrating a milestone with a coworker. On the other hand, if you don't think there is such a relationship between coworkers and your husband, it may feel awkward. In that case, I'd let the office organize whatever they feel appropriate. If there is that genuine fondness, respect between DH and his coworkers, then I think a party in your home would be very nice. Your DH sounds much like mine - not anti social, but just one who could think of many things he'd rather do with his free time than make small talk at a party. But, this is a big occasion for him, and while he may not admit to wanting a party, he probably would be pleased with a small gathering. If you think he would truly not want a party, I would think an alternate way to celebrate would be to plan a big trip somewhere where the departure date is a few days after his last day at work. Europe, a cruise in the Mediterranean, or even a cruise to Alaska would be a special way to celebrate. Perhaps you could invite family members to come with you to celebrate his retirement and to kick off this next phase in your lives.

I agree with lindac (as usual) -- you don't need games or planned activities. If you really are afraid that people won't socialize, then have a party to watch a game or other special event on TV. But I would trust your guests to enjoy getting to know each other. If you think these people simply won't enjoy each other, don't invite them all to the same party! Why don't you want to serve supper? If I were invited to a party on a Saturday evening, unless it starts really late -- at least 9 pm -- I would assume you were giving me dinner. It doesn't have to be a sit-down meal or anything fancy, but substantial enough that people who didn't eat before won't go hungry (or scarf up all the snacks before the rest get any!). Cold cuts, chili, etc. all cost as little as appetizers and are a lot easier to prepare and serve, too. Are you planning on indicating when you invite people that it is a birthday party, or just inviting them to "a" party? If the former, they will probably bring gifts, so you definitely don't want to seem skimpy with the food, as if you were trying to get gifts while spending as little as possible. I know that is NOT why you are having this party! But you want to make sure that none of your guests gets that feeling.

Dear Talley Sue & AlicesRestaurant, ( and everyone with your very kind comments about my writings!! When I felt like such a failure you all managed to find something to lift me up and make me proud and happpy) As, Talley Sue suggested, I had a great supper. DH took me out so I did not have to cook or clean up afterward. So,I am going back in a few minutes. I have a long week-end ahead of me. Worst case, when the Kids come over, I will ask for their opinion. Also, this time they are going to make it into the front seat of my car, or better their cars! ThatÂs the plan. DH almost blew a gasket when I told him that I need more clothes. He has seen the bills and he knows I have been buying something. He just does not get it, but I am not going to stream about his insensitivity. ( after all I don't get it either LOL) I am moving forward. So, I think by this time Friday, I should have done something done. I think I am going to start by picking out seven work outfits for next week. That way my Sunday night challenge is over with. Ok, bye for a while, Oh Thank you all, I mean, I really am about to walk to the closet, here I go, OK, OK, OK, bye now...

That IS a lovely swap package, and I really like those leaf shaped bowls. The winestopper is very unique too, I love things made with wood.

Those leaf bowls are amazing. Stacy, you must have some great shops near you. I just have the usual chains. Sigh. I guess that means one day I'll have to visit you!

Okay - I went one pic too far - #7 is a tart of somekind (apple?) that I really really want a piece of right now.

Such pretty wrapping. I love it all but I especially love the cheese board.

You just about gave me a heart attack. I looked in my records and I see that you are suppose to be receiving from Tracey. My biggest fear when I'm trying to match up names and send out emails is that I'll send the same name to two people. I'm thinking Oh boy, I really screwed up this time. Now what I'm I going to do. LOL!

Tracey, what a wonderful swap box. I especially love the slate cheese board. I love how you can write the name of the cheeses on the board.

Peppi, the stopper would look wonderful on a bottle of olive oil too.

OMG! Tracey, sorry on the name mess up! What I didn't write was that a tummy bug hit me yesterday morning fast and bad and I was not functioning at my best when the boxes came. Boy do I have egg(with stringy stuff) all over my face.

I am not sure if the photo's do the leaf serving peices threir full justice, but they are a perfect match for my kitchen table cloth. They look so pretty on the table I still haven't moved them. Tonight I am opening the oil and wine with dinner!

Maggie, that was a french apple tart I made with the tart pan Sherry sent me last spring. I do need to make one again, it was so easy.

Peppi, Glad you're feeling better. My best friend calls me Stacy, she always has.

Jessy come for a visit but there isn't much to do around here or many places to shop. I have one place that happens to have unique things. They recognize they can't compete with the big stores so they carry different things. I just love to look there.

When I clicked on the pictures I immediately went to the picture of the tart. I thought, wow, she received a tart pan in the swap and to show off the pan, baked a tart before taking pictures. :)

Love the slate cheese board. I saw some similar in my swap shopping adventures and it was one of the things I almost bought for myself. Isn't it funny to see all the goodies everyone receives and see a few things that a) you did buy for yourself or b) almost bought for yourself. :)

Tracey - love the wine and cheese theme. Peppi, enjoy your boxes of goodies.
