My package from phyllis_philodendron was waiting for me when I got home just a few minutes ago. I tore into it immediately, of course. She sent some great stuff but you're going to have to be patient because DH and I have to grab a bite to eat and then head out to a meeting but as soon as I get back I will write a proper report, I just didn't want to make Phyllis (not her real name, who knew) wait any longer to find out if if arrived safely.

Here is the killifish tank a few months after I set it up, notice there is not much moss yet. This is a photo I took of the right side tonight showing the moss and ferns. I took a little tree fern mount that once held my Bulbophyllum moniliforme (RIP) and mounted it to the cork to see what would grow from it. I was not disappointed and within a few weeks tropical mosses and ferns began to grow. You can see a little Hoya kanyakumariana, a few little Bulbophyllum pieces I stuck in there and a little Pleurothallis. There is a hideous black algae growing over the moss on the wet wall so I have turned the water lifter off and just mist every now and then in hopes that the algae will dry up. I wish I knew a good way to discourage algae because it can smother the moss which takes it's time to grow. I may try mounting more tree fern panels over the areas with algae because the tree fern never seems to get algae due to it's airiness. I may try to mount the Siginnias to the wall using some sphagnum moss or I may drill out a cavity in a piece of tree fern to make a pocket where I can add appropriate growing media. Here are the Nothobranchius guntheri that live in the water portion of the tank. These fish are annual African killifish that live in temporary pools during the wet season and breed like crazy, their eggs survive in the dry mud until the rains return. I am hoping to move these fish into another tank so that I can house my new Rivulus cf. ornatus in this tank where they will be able to develop into a small colony. They should look good. I sure did plant enough. The thing with lily bulbs is that I consider them a great investment as they come back year after year. I bought a whole pile of annuals yesterday and those get pricey and really add up. They do give so much color to the garden the whole summer long but next year, there I go having to buy the lot all over again.

Mrsgilly, I've never ordered tomato plants from Gurneys, so I can't comment on them, and aside of occassionally buy a tomato or pepper plant on impulse when I visit a nursery department or garden store, I have started most of my tomato and pepper plants for many years. Two places with excellent reputations are SelectedPlants.com in Alabama; and HeirloomTomatoPlants.com in Southern California. The owner of Selected Plants, Darrel Jones, is a delight to work with. When you call him, he can tell you exactly which plants he has in stock. He has grown everything he sells and can tell you about them if you are unsure of which heirloom and open pollinated tomatoes you might like to try. Laurel Garza at Heirloom Tomato Plants Carries a few Hybrid plants and has photos of many varieties on her site and also grows all of her own plants. According to people who have ordered from them, both Darrel and Laurel do excellent jobs of packing and shipping plants and are very easy to work with if there is a problem with the plants when they arrive. I have personally dealt with them in other respects and found both of them to be fine people. I do suggest you order early from either or both of them next year. I believe that if you do, they both make sure they plants seeds specifically for your order. Otherwise, you can find out what is available and they can ship it out. I hope that helps. Betsy

I don't live in New York but I've been a few times. If you are looking for something sort of out of the ordinary to do, I would suggest looking into some food tours. I've done three different ones: Brooklyn Pizza tour, Greenwich Village walking tour and Lower East Side walking tour. On both of the walking tours, we did a fairly small area but got to taste a large variety of foods in several establishments in addition to learning about the neighborhood and the culture. On the Brooklyn Pizza tour, we took a bus from Manhattan across the Brooklyn Bridge and ate at two different pizza places in Brooklyn. They drove to several locales where movies were filmed and showed us the clip of the movie while were passing through the same spot. Very fun. Speaking of the Brooklyn Bridge, that's also a fun thing to do. Take the subway from Manhattan to Brooklyn and walk back to Manhattan across the bridge. No lines but great views of the city. For play tickets (if you don't already have yours or want to see additional plays while you're there) I definitely recommend the TKTS booth in Times Square. Don't be intimidated by the line! It moves very quickly and in fact, we usually have barely made up our minds about what play we want to see by the time we got to the front of the line. They sell half price tickets for that day's performance of selected Broadway & off-Broadway shows. If you have time, I'd run down to the local library before you leave and get a book on NYC. I've found great hints in some of those books. Have a great time! I love New York!

O.K. I'm back. Now for the details.

First, there was a nice letter which explained some of the gifts. There is a mug with a picture of Vidler's five and ten cent store on it as well as some other local landmarks which are located near to where Phyllis lives in western New York. I didn't think that type of store existed any more, it sounds like a great place to visit expecially the candy counter. Vidler's even has its picture on a post card has been mentioned in Martha Stewart Living!

And for in the mug, a container of Ghirardelli hot chocolate mix, yum. Phyliss wrapped the mix and added a cute label warning about overuse of the product leading to, among other things, an uncontrollable urge to visit the cooking forum for extended periods of time!

Phyllis did some research and learned I like to can and found 3 old canning booklets on Ebay. I've only had a few minutes to look through them but I know that I will have a great time reading them. One is from 1942 and talks about having to do without many food items because they will be shipped to our troops or allies.

And lastly, a lovely jar of kiwi jam. I helped make 45 different varities of jam and jelly last year but have never tried kiwi. I may have to share that with one of the grandsons who loves kiwis.

Phyllis, you did a wonderful job as a cooking forum swap virgin. Thanks so much for the great package.

We just got a digital camera last week and I took a picture of all the goodies. If I can figure out how to post it before the swap is over I will. Now, I better get going and finish up my package and get it in the mail.

Hi LInda! (Waving madly!!) I'm so glad it got there safely and that you enjoyed everything. I hope the Kiwi jam is good, it looked interesting enough when I picked it up and I immediately thought of you. I'm glad it's something you've never had before! :) I loved looking through the old canning books - there are instructions on how to make an underground canning storage unit/bomb shelter! THat got my attention quickly! LOL

I was pretty nervous about this virgin swap thing but I will definitely do it again. :) It's so much fun sending out a little something of yourself to someone so far away! (and I was afraid you wouldn't have enough snowy weather to enjoy the cocoa in but now I see that you do! ;)

Love the hot cocoa stuff, and that kiwi jam sounds interesting.

The old canning books sound great, and I know Linda cans more kinds of jam than anyone I know. It's amazing that you found a kind that she doesn't make!!

As for the cocoa, well, how could chocolate be a bad idea?
