WANTED: A Chinese New Year goldmine from Goldgirl

After my post office sort of forgot to let me know I had a package (think Mayberry), I finally tracked it down last night. What fun...Goldgirl couldn't have done better.

First a nice letter and a gorgeous Chinese New Year card (we just had a Year of the Pig celebrations at our kids' programs.

Here's everything:

International: The Little Saigon Cookbook. Goldgirl saw that I've never tried Vietnamese food, so she made sure I have no excuse. DH said he spent a year in Vietnam and didn't eat Vietnamese food once...now that he is older and wiser, he can't wait to try it. The book came with a jar of lemongrass powder so I am ready to make....something. I think I'll be curling up with this book AND a strong, sweet cup of Vietnamese coffee this afternoon.

Cooking Method:Brewing...a Vietnamese coffee set. I can't wait to play with this (probably this afternoon when DH comes up for a break). I tried to get a shot of the insides...cool gadget. Fortunately GG thought to send a link to directions. There's two of them, along with coffee and sweetened condensed milk. (I may have to keep the can). GG says they make good iced coffee...now I can't wait for it to warm up!

Then came Ceramics: Oh, these are gorgeous. I love the shape and the color, and you can see how well they go with the candle holder (gift from the Kid) in the background:

We eat lots of rice bowls and stir-fry-sh things. These bowls will be perfect...

I have that cookbook! I think it's great. I love the coffee set and the bowls. I always get the "cafe sua da" at Vietnamese restaurants.

In Belgium, we don't celebrate the Chinese New Year - only Chinese people do it and some newspaper put an advertisement on their first page. As for the Groundhog day... which is what we call "chandeleur" (candlemas), we don't do anything special except eating... pancakes. On mardi gras, we admire the carnival parades that happen in each town, city and village of Belgium except in the capital (Brussels - don't know why). Elementary schools - including those of Brussels - organize a costume ball. In what Belgians call "The Province", we organize carnival celebrations that last one, two or three and sometimes four weeks. For instance, some weeks after carnival Mons citizens organize their "Ducasse"/"Doudou" (special games that come from the Middle Ages) which takes place on May 18th this year. Binches organizes its "Soumonces" each sunday 7 weeks before Carnival, they even organize "Dimanche et Lundi Gras" (Sunday and Monday). Carnival has to definitely stop before Ash Wednesday sunrise. In the past, people of Europe celebrated the carnival week by doing anything that they did not do during the year: to eat too much, drink more than too much, to party, dance, parade, assassination, poisoning, and so on. They were seldom punished as people were always disguised. Fortunately, these times are over ;-)

What a great swap box! I remember that we began the swaps as a way to share regional tastes with forum members in other places. I may have to think about my swap items differently. I haven't seen a full service gas station in a very long time. There may still be a few around but not in my town. I think you can get help if you are disabled. Great job, Sue! Eileen

LOL Lars, I was thinking I might have to explain :) The little plush dog was taken hostage by my 12 year old Golden when my back was turned. She managed to reach up and and in a very agile, and silent manner, grab it without me having a clue. The other items was the Red Hots candy. I was having trouble coming up with a theme, and then found one of Brenda's posts that mentioned Red Hots. Instant theme, but Red Hots are very difficult to find in this area, although I *knew* I had seen them. The store I wandered into was a Dollar Store :)

Thanks everyone! We've just returned from our Chinatown excursion. It was a long but fun day. We ate a lot of Chinese baked buns: cocktail buns, pineapple buns, BBQ pork buns, and hotdog buns! Little man and I joked about our fun buns lunch! LOL We went to the Chinese Cultural Center but things were not quite set up. Seemed like they were not going to be ready until this weekend. So we went to visit a few Chinese grocery stores. OMG, it was like a zoo everywhere. People were shopping like crazy. No surprise though, two more days of shopping before the big day. We bought a pack of Chinese New Year treat called Cows Ears, some deep fried cookies, for the occasion. But we were out for so long that we ended up eating the whole bag before making it home! LOL Image of Cows Ears: Then I bought these gorgeous Chinese kumquat (like mini oranges). They are small but sweet in a strange way. Hard to explain. I did save some for the Tray of Togetherness. Image of kumquats: We are going to the zoo all day tomorrow so I will make the shrimp dumplings tonight. Will start the chicken congee in the slow cooker before we leave tomorrow morning. By the time we get home we will just heat up the shrimp dumplings and eat them with the chicken congee. Should be another fun day for us. By the way, hubby and little man just ate two of the Lo Mai Gai and they LOVED it. So it's worth the time making them. :-) Al
