WANTED: Ann T. really needs a salute right now

What she does for this forum in phenomenal. Her cookbooks, her help, her gorgeous photo postcards, her support... are generous and kind, but what she does for these swaps is amazing. Fifteen swaps! There have been 15 swaps? Wow!

It is very hard work to arrange them. It's a very time consuming job, trying to make sure that nobody gets the same partner as before, and trying to arrange swappers to get partners from different geographical areas.

She does all this because she is Ann T: an amazingly talented woman who does not deserve any carp from anyone over this "unpaid position."

So, I suggest all of us who appreciate her and the amazing swap job she does lift a glass and give her a salute wherever you are. I for one appreciate everything she does for us, and all the work that she puts into these swaps. I know we often tell her after a swap is over how much we appreciate her, but I really think right now she could use a huge boost from all of us. So, let's salute her right here and now with whatever you are drinking at the moment.

I salute you, Ann, with a glass of ice cold water!

I have admired Ann right from my very first post on the forum. She always knows how to say things in a kind and diplomatic way....except when you are talking about carrots! : )

And yes, the swaps are difficult.

Kevin, I was thinking about this thread this morning, and I had to kind of laugh - it falls into the "be careful what you wish for" category, lol. My neighbor (not the tree-cutting one, the one on the other side) has a very sunny yard - boy, does he love his lawn! - and I really am very divided on this issue. On one hand, I, like terrene, drool over his sun and imagine the garden beds I would build there, but when I walk from my yard over to his, I can literally feel the temperature rise! His yard is so hot! That where my dilemma comes in. While I would love to be able to grow more sun-lovers, I do so love my shade. My yard (and house) is cooler in the summer, my guests can sit and refresh themselves in my shade gardens, and it just has such a peaceful, refreshing feel to it. I'm almost glad my other neighbor took down the trees, because I don't think I would take the initiative to do so. Unfortunately, the orientation of my yard is such that to have full sun, I'd have to take the trees down in the front/side yard. Of course, these are the beautiful, three- and four-trunked oaks. The scrubby, non-descript oaks are in the back (northeast) and on the north side of the house, so taking those down wouldn't make much difference anyway. I would look at your situation as a chance to plant new stuff! How about a small tree or a large shrub that would throw some shade onto your now-frying garden? I'm sure you can convince yourself into buying *something*, no? ;) Dee

Thanks for the advice, Penny. My dozen new plants were also sown from very fresh seed and sprouted readily. I had never thought about a gravel mulch, so that's one thing that you're doing differently from me. In fact, they really weren't mulched at all, so that could be the difference. Or, I guess we can't rule out that you have an earlier blooming strain, but then why would it just be some of your plants? Then again, genetics can do odd things. About the trumpet vine, Steve, everything Penny says is true, and yet I have a fondness for the plant. It is an awesome hummingbird attractor. I have a yellow flowering one, (the orange/red ones are better, though) which was planted many years ago against the house (gulp!). Fortunately, I don't think it's heavy enough to take our house down, but it does do irritating things like grow into the shutters, and gets under the aluminum siding on the upper floor. I just keep after it and hack it out when it misbehaves, and no harm has been done to our house. Most people would not want to have to bother with that sort of maintenance. I guess I'm sentimental about it because it's the plant that started me on my hummingbird addiction. A couple of summers ago, I saw a hummer feeding from it just outside our window, and decided to hang feeders from the vine. The rest is history, as they say! I've since added and continue to add more plants, but still have a soft spot for that lovable monster. It does take many years to reach blooming size. I had just about given up on mine, but it did finally bloom. When the hummers feed from it, their entire head disappears into the huge flower! I would highly recommend it, though, if you don't mind waiting for it, but with all the caveats that Penny mentioned. That's an interesting thought, Christie, about the columbines. The reserve is about 20 miles southwest of us, and is a little warmer than we are. I've noticed that the same plants bloom earlier there than here. I was assuming the columbines wouldn't be blooming yet, but perhaps I should take a trip over there and look for them. If they're really an earlier blooming strain, they might already be in full bloom. Of course, it would be awhile before I could harvest the seeds, but it would be interesting to see if they were blooming now. If only some were, maybe I could tie little pieces of colored yarn around the stems of the early ones. At the same reserve, I've also seen what I think are Monarda fistulosa, with pale lavender flowers. I don't know if I could find them again, but I think they're a hummer flower. Maybe I could get seeds from those later in the summer.

Sorry about not replying sooner! I had some trouble yesterday with certain children letting me on the computer long enough to answer emails and peek at the KT but that's it. Inconsiderate babies who don't nap properly! LOL ;) Anyway, thanks for all of the congratulations and good wishes. It is so exciting to know that we only have one more week here! Yippee! Now for the advice...motor home rental-too pricey...tenting it-this is early spring in Saskatchewan. We would freeze. There is no land because every lot is sold. Every lot. In the whole town. The "weekend" homes are an hour away and more expensive than a house in town would be. There is nothing to rent right at this moment and when stuff comes up it's snatched up in no time. I think there are people who troll the streets waiting for a rental to come up, LOL. I want Annie to go to the school in town so we have to live there. Also, Claire's preschool is there. All three Realtors know us personally and have all of our numbers and strict instructions to call if anything becomes available. And I so appreciate them for doing that. Gosh Patti, I wish you were close too! I would love for someone to play with the kids while I just laid on the couch and read a book for an hour. That would be SWEET! LOL Having time to house-hunt isn't a problem, it's the lack of options out there. :( I'm so sorry for your crummy experience Donna! We found out today that renting at the hotel is out of the question because it would be $2200/month at one and $1700/month at the other. *sigh* I don't even know if the campground is running at this time of year. We don't own a trailer and our car is too small to sleep in. :D I'm trying to see this as an adventure, and I was starting to think that staying at a hotel would be fun because I wouldn't have to clean, but darn. :) There is no one who can take our cats as our friends are either saddled with cats of their own or they are highly allergic. The hotels in town are not part of a chain, they are privately owned and thus why they can charge a goofy rate. Anyway, I appreciate every single person who responded to my thread. An epiphany: I don't think I want granite. Now what?

I really don't like granite. It's too speckeldy, too pretentious, too cold, too ostentatious, too expensive. And maybe it's just me, but doesn't most of it just look like rust stains? I also researched all the other countertop choices. Throughout our homebuilding we've tried to remain focused on our twin goals, Durable and Low Maintenance. And so we've come back to granite. What I found out is that granite showrooms only have a tiny selection of slabs onsite for you to look at. And most of those are ugly speckled rust stains. BUT, when you've found a company you want to work with, they'll hook you up with the huge granite yards where you go to pick out a slab and they send it to the installer. In our case it's a two hour drive to a huge city where there are a half dozen granite yards and acres of slabs of granite to choose from. You walk around for a couple of hours dragging your husband (who really doesn't want to be there and doesn't like anything unless it's cobalt blue) and your kids (who are fighting over a piece of gravel they picked up in the parking lot) and suddenly you turn a corner and find The Perfect Slab. And you hear a heavenly chorus that swells to drown out the sound of the kids squabbling and the perky salesperson who doesn't have a clue what you're really looking for (you couldn't tell her because you weren't really sure either.) And tears of relief and joy spring to your eyes, your husband drops to his knees in shock when he hears the price, and then you're done. Then you get to choose a backsplash!

Mine's coffee......and while I don't swap....I love reading about it. And I sure have an idea what a pain it is to match it all up!! I arranged a Christmas swap for an email group of 20 who wanted to swap and found out what a job it is...graphs with lines criss crossing and with the list of who gave to who in the last 2 swaps and trying not to duplicate anything....it's a royal pain!!

Frankly I wonder why she's not in the loony bin! maybe she is LOL and that's why she keeps doing it!
Who was it that got shortchanged once...and we all sent her a gift! LOL! She was deluged with surcies!! LOL!

Me, too! I raise my travel mug of TJ's Organic Sumatra to the Queen of Swaps. Ann makes this Forum extra special. I don't know how she does it all -- for a bunch of former strangers, no less.

Sorry I have had to sit out the last couple swaps, but I'll jump back in one day.

I'm raising my lattÃ© to Ann. She is as lovely and fun and knowledgeable in person as she is on line. I'm not sure how she fits home, husband, work and the CF into each day, and all with grace.

I can't do this swap but am always in awe of her skill and efforts in putting them together; no easy job that's for sure.

That was me! I definitely was deluged and it was so very much fun. By the way, more than once I think, Ann has gotten shortchanged in the swap, and she always insists that we don't make up for it by doing something like that for her.

I am not part of the swap..

But I am glad I peeked today and this is the first thread I saw..

I just want to say..that Ann IS extremely kind ..generous.. and knowlegeable..and humble!

I hope it's ok to give my opinion even if I am not a swap member.

I gave nearly all my cookbooks away (except for 100) last week because I have Ann's cookbook. I always refer to it when hosting a party or a special dinner. When I get home from my meeting I'll raise a glass of water to you! Thank you for all that you do. Oh and ditto all the sweetness above ;-) I'm sorry that you have to deal with inconsideration in the mist of the excitement of a swap.

It takes a "real" woman to step up and do the right thing when it comes to these swaps. Thank you Sherry.

i can't believe anyone would give you grief over the swaps. you are INCREDIBLE. i know first hand the work that goes into coordinating these type events and seeing that you have done 15 of them so far, if i wore a hat, my hat would be off to you!!!!!

i'm still waiting for you to adopt me. i'll eat anything you put before me and clean up after everyone!!!!!!!

A big clink to you Ann!! I'm amazed at how you manage to keep this fun and exciting for everyone... even with a challenge or two every great now and then..not to forget the time and effort on your part.

I have to add that I am still amazed and in awe with the whole thing in general. Who would have thought that a group of people with a common interest would come together and share some of their favorite food/cooking gifts with people, really friends, that they met on the net. The camps, get togethers, lunches, shopping days and whatnot just make me smile and feel good about life in general. I really do love this place and all of it's members whether you swap or not.

I too am raising a glass to Ann. The work involved in matching people from swap to swap, even when she may not have felt like it, and keeping us going, even when we didn't feel like it. Add the international shipments and the headaches get worse.

And how can I ever thank you enough for my last swap partner, one of my BBF, Cathy, and knowing I would be able to give her the package in person. And in her PJ's!!!!

A voice from the past, Ann, raising a toast to you!

I haven't been on for a number of months except to lurk now and then for a few minutes. I miss the swaps! I need to come back and post so I can play again!

Ann, you always inspire me with your photos--they are the first things I look for when I'm scolling through. What a gift you are to all of us!

You are so generous with your responses and I am ever grateful for all of you that are the backbone of this forum. I raise my cup to you. Sorry that I haven't swapped but my schedule gets too erratic and I would hate to disappoint anyone. But it's fun to lurk.

Another one here who thinks Ann is da bomb! It's been awhile since I've been able to participate in swaps, but I admire and respect Ann immensely for all the efforts she puts into them. Ann's a sweetie, and I'm raising my mug of joe to her this am.

Ann's been a great friend to me now for many years, even though we've never met. My life is definitely different (for the better) for knowing her. I love her recipes and get lots of inspiration from her posts and activities. And of course the swaps would not be the same without her. I'm hoping that she and her family will visit SoCal some day soon!

Sherry, good for you for starting this post. Ann definitely deserves all the recognition and praise she's gotten here and more.

She's been unfailingly diplomatic, willing to share recipes, advice, friendship, shopping tips, anything that someone else might need, and that's before she arranges the swaps.

Definitely a clink with my Diet Coke, here's to Ann T.

I, too, want to thank you Ann. I'm not a very regular presence here, but you are an important, warm and inspiring presence to me. Your generosity, wonderful recipes, cookbook and guidance are with me (even when I'm not here).

Thank you for all your graciousness. It captures what food should be all about - something fun, delicious and shared with friends.
