They can do all you want to do and more.

Not expensive at all. $20 to $50

You can also use Microsoft Excel, or Access, but why reinvent the wheel?

Deanna, I see the new Google Android tablets are about $150. I don't know much about them but a friend just got one and I may see him tonight at ping pong. I'll ask him about it.

I got an Acer Netbook (not notebook) - it was about $200 on Woot (refurbished). It has a 150 GB hard drive and I use it for just what you want. I keep all my recipes on it, as well as lots of other "important" stuff. I tote it around, and when I visit the grandkids, I take it with me. And I always have my favorite recipes with me in case I have to cook.

Mine runs about 2 1/2 hours on the battery, but for the most part, I keep it plugged in when I use it. Mine has a wireless card so I can keep connected to the network for surfing and email. It's lightweight and I can keep it in my lap, and it's easy to take it with me when I fly or drive.

I would recommend getting one that has "decent" size screen, or the screen will just be too small to be useful. I installed Microsoft Office and a few other programs, but most of them come with some useful "free" programs preinstalled. I also have iTunes and the grandkids like to watch cartoons on it, the screen is just their size.

dcarch: Thanks for your suggestions. I'm actually looking for the hardware, not software. Appreciate the suggestions though. We have a full size laptop now, but I want a separate "something" for the kitchen. I have a ton of recipes saved in Outlook at work and want to bring them home and be able to sort, read and cook with them IN the kitchen.

Gina: Yes, please. I'm not familiar at all with the tablet style. I'd be interested to see what your friend has to say.

momj47: I've been doing just a little looking at Acer and Asus brands (cheaper) as well as the Sylvania 7".

It's interesting to me that the "minis" have been out for around 3 years and there aren't many used or refurbs out there. That tells me that either people didn't buy them right away or they did and love them and aren't selling used ones. Hmmmm.....???

This is strictly a splurge thing for me and not a "need", so I'm planning to take my time and find the right application and price. I check craigslist regularly too.

You might consider a Netbook. I donlt have one, but my best friend does and she always has it in her carry along bag and can access email, the internet, and has Word (and a couple other applications) on it that she uses regularly. It will not handle heavy graphics applications (you cant harvest your crops on Farmville) but it does text based message boards like GW beautifully. I am not recommending a particular brand or seller, but there are a lot on eBay in your price range.....

I would definitely check around for brand recommendations and look at cnet for reviews.

My DH really likes the Asus eeepc he bought for his dad. You can get them for about $200 which is the high end of your budget, but it'd work for lots more than just recipes. He put linux on it (of course) but there's no law saying you have to!
