Old Home Week

I haven't been over to conversations for quite a while and was very moved by the posts I read in Lars and Stacy's threads. Where has the time gone?

I was so privileged to have so many on this forum touch me in many ways over the years. We really were quite the "family" .

If anyone is interested I thought a "catch up" thread may be fun. Would LOVE to hear from voices of times gone by as well as those who have come aboard more recently.

Two years ago Clive and I sold our home in Oakville, a place many of you have visited, and moved "temporarily" to the cottage..we are still here! Clive built a huge garage and finally has the work space he always wanted. I have set up a rug hooking "studio" that gives me a place to create my own mess and leave it there!!! We travel quite a bit so for now this is working out well but a city "pied a terre" is still the plan.

Meredith has finished university, traveled the South Pacific for 18 months, got a post graduate degree and is working in PR in Toronto.. off the payroll and doing very well. She has a very serious BF..I think this is the one so expect to hear some news in that direction soon.

Chris and Amity are doing very well. Bought a new home and are serious nesters!!! Just waiting on them doing their "duty" but I think that may not be in their plans..ungrateful bunch! So it may all be up to Meredith! LOL

Doug and Sara are doing well enough. Doug has a new lady love he seems quite taken with so that's good. Sara worries me. She has serious physical disabilities as a result of her stroke and teenagers are less than kind so she has very few fiends. She goes off to university in a year so I'm hoping she will find some independence away form her overly protective Dad!

Well that's more info than anyone probably wanted to hear but I would love to hear how life goes for all of you.

Sharon, I was wondering if you'd ever gotten that condo. It seems like you don't really need it, you've settled in so well at the cottage. I'd seen the house in Oakville, one of these days I'll surprise you and visit the cottage too. You've been pretty darned close to my house here in White Cloud, better hurry before I sell it and move to the farm, LOL.

I'm glad Doug has found a new lady but I hate to hear that about Sara, she's overcome so much. Life shouldn't be that hard and people needn't be that cruel. (sigh)

Amanda is working at a nursing home, Bud is 7 and Makayla is 9. Bud is still a handful, he has a teacher that's pushing Amanda hard to put him on Ritalin or something similar, but Amanda is going to try everything else first. Everyone loves him, though, he's just too funny not to love, LOL. Makayla is a great student, the teachers love her, she does exceptionally well in class and everyone loves her too. Especially the little boy who sits behind her on the bus, but she thinks boys are "icky". We'll see how long THAT lasts. (grin) Dave still has his own garage and business is gradually improving, our economy has made it a bit more difficult but it's coming along.

Ashley is a radiologist at a local hospital, married to a police officer in a neighboring town. Madison just turned one and Ashley is pregnant and due in August with #2.

I retired last January and Elery retired in July. His father just passed away on December 10, so the only remaining parent is my mother. We are quickly becoming the "oldest generation" and that sucks. Ugh. Elery's house is up for sale, mine will be ready by spring, hopefully. We still plan to build at the farm, including an outdoor wood burning pizza oven. Sharon and Clive can come visit us there and we'll burn bread together, LOL.

Cinder, The Dead Cat From Hell, is no longer with me, she's over the Bridge with the WonderWeiner and Elery's Chihuahua, Pancho. We still have Cooper and both horses, The Dude and Bossy Cow and Red Cow and a conglomeration of calves, barn cats, laying hens and probably animals I don't even remember.

Elery's daughter just announced that she's getting married in October, so I have another wedding cake to decorate. Thank goodness she's the final unmarried child, between the two of us we have 6 kids and 9 grandkids, pretty soon it'll be 10. Life goes on and the family just keeps growing!

What a nice idea, Chase. I don't get here as often as I'd like and it's good to catch up.

Ah, Di...that's a lot to bear. All good thoughts for your family.

Not much to catch up on here. I am still trying to run two libraries with not enough budget and looking longingly down the road to retirement. Six years out from breast cancer and paying way more attention to stress and diet than I used to. A locavore yogi I am, lol.

Liana aka The Kid (who I believe had just started high school when I first posted here) graduated college, finally found a good job and landed on a couple of acres of farmland less than an hour from us. She and her fiance plan to get married "sometime, maybe in 2014". They are trying to get a handle on his newly diagnosed Crohn's. Still no grandbabies...sighhhhhh...

DH is sort of retired...maybe he'll finish the house we started in nineteenseventymumblemumble.

Seriously...in a timber town that lost nearly all its mills a few years ago, I feel lucky to have good health, a place that's paid for and a steady job (no matter how much I snivel about retirement and grandbabies!) Happy New Year, all.

I'm not sure whats its called, but i have some here now...You can get it at "Home Depot"...Its a gray 2" rectangle type bar thats made of some hard ceramic type material and you scrub the stain away, a little bit of elbow grease and it takes it right off...It won't scratch the toilet but wears down pretty fast as you scrub...Just ask someone in Home Depot and if they don't know then explain it to them....

Yeah, the Home Warranty was a joke. The water heater was also original, and we had trouble from Day One having enough water for two showers, let alone enough later in the day for a slower, elderly father to shower. So we checked the warranty papers. It would replace the water heater only if it broke. Since we still got some hot water from it, it was functioning. Unless it broke completely and did not give any hot water, we were out of luck. So we ended up replacing it ourselves so Dad could get a warm shower. Last fall, just before the warranty expired, I had the furnace inspected. It had one section of the heat exchanger plugged. Again, it did produce heat, just really inefficiently. Since it did, no repair or replacement. At that time, the heat exchanger was intact with no leaks. Needless to say, we did not renew the warranty for a second year. We never expected it to take a year and a half to get the old house sold (and it is not really sold, we have a rent-to-own tennant in it now). We expected to have the money to replace the furnace, water heater, windows, doors, and to insulate in the first two or three years. In two weeks it will be two years since we closed on the house. We have two new doors in the garage, waiting for our favoirite carpenter to have time to install them. These are the first improvements.

What a great idea!
I dont post all that much lately but i do lurk from time to time.

Lets see...after the move here to NJ, i got right to work turning this house into a home. Its been an ongoing project that never seems to end.
I changed careers and started working full time. I love my job and have been working my way up!
Amy is now 23 and after graduating with a business and marketing degree, found nothing in her field. After struggling with part time jobs, she decided to come on board the walmart team where she is already a zone manager and is interviewing for assistant store manager positions.
With her age and degrees, she'll move up even faster!
Her guy pal Matt is living with us. His home is in north jersey but his job is outside philly so it makes sense. He is an accountant.

Andrew is now 20 and goes to community college and works in the walmart deli. He doesnt have a clue what he wants to do with his life....shame because hes so smart, just a little lazy.
He has a gal pal but its nothing serious. He has been seizure free for some time now (knock wood)!!

Frank and I will celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary this april...no big plans yet.

Besides my work, i also belong to our towns town watch and i'm starting to get involved in local politics. I also joined a book club and i started crafting again....fun stuff!

Sadly both my folks are gone, as are all of the pets i've posted about.
I now have 2 havanese dogs-AbbeeRose and Apollo. If you know me on facebook you know all about my lil furbabies!

I cant wait to catch up with everyone!

Well, thanks for the updates! I have wondered about so many friends here. Sharon - I loved your home, but never saw the cottage, and I'm sure it's lovely. It sounds like Meredith and Chris are doing really well - I think I remember when Meredith was just getting ready to go traveling? I think that heading off to university will also be good for Sara as the friends around her will be maturing and not be so prone to cruelty....

katie, the time has flown hasn't it? My diet has changed lots also - and I always credit this place and you all for helping me to get where I am. We don't do processed stuff really at all - which means that I cook all the time, and everything takes time...so without the skills and interest and knowledge that I gained from hanging out here, there's no way I'd be able to do what I do....plus Will is even more fanatical than I am about what he eats - so even if I get lazy, he won't eat it. It's hard for him being a kid - he hesitates to accept dinner invitations to friends' houses and there's no satisfying him with a soda and a bag of doritos....he'd end up sick. Part of it is he cares - but part is because he gets headaches and stomach issues when he eats junk. I guess i could have worse problems than a kid who's a label reader. :-)

Annie, busy as always, I see! It's so nice with a big growing family like that. I think it's funny that you said you "retired". I know better than that - LOL. I bet you work harder than ever.

Susie - it sounds like your family is doing well, too!

Scott still travels lots - probably more than before. Will still plays the saxophone and is really into it. He plays in the jazz band, concert band, and pep band, and was chosen this year to go to All State. He's a great kid and we're really proud of him.

My mom passed away after her long struggle - just this past February. It took some getting used to - letting go of the constant worry. I miss her but find myself longing for the days when she was still healthy.

me? I work out, clean, paint, and cook - and try to keep up with the maintenance on this old house. :-)
