I've done a bit of school food service as a rotation in my RD training and if it's a good group of people, you'll love it. And I know they'll love you!

Hurray! The new job sounds so much better than the stinky old one. When I was in school, we always loved the "cafeteria ladies."

Congratulations. What a turnaround from a short while ago. You are going to enjoy your new (shorter) commute so much, especially as the days lengthen into summer. All that extra time to enjoy your home.

And I agree on the cafeteria ladies. My cousin was a cafeteria lady, one of the best. When she got ill, her co-workers were an incredibly supportive and sustaining community.

Congrats! A friend of mine is a newly retired cafeteria lady. Even after receiving a hefty inheritance she kept working because she liked it so much. Do you get a big ol' hairnet? (Picturing Ruth Buzzi.)

I am so thrilled I got up SO early LOL!!!

The main job is in retail however I will be working with apparel. Its a lot less than my old job but once again you have to factor in gas at $3 a gallon, bridge tolls, union dues, city wage tax and the dreaded commute.

I can pretty much wear what I want to work-guidelines not a uniform and its a permament position-not holiday help and I can expect about 30-35 hours per week as apposed to the max 20 hours per week at the old job.

Being a people person I feel this job would be a good fit for me. Today is orientation so I will post later about it!!

The food service job I am doing on a whim LOL!! I was checking my sons grades online (isn't power school grand?) when I saw a banner for substitute bus drivers and cafeteria staff.
So I went in a applied and got the gig. I have to go thru a battery of paperwork, criminal backround test, drug screen and fingerprints so I won't start until all that clears-prob sometime in Jan.
I will be sub number 3.
All the food is prepared at the high school and then trasported to the 4 elementry feeder schools so with 5 locations they are in need of a few more subs. I asked if they may be a regular position in the future and they said yes-everyone starts as a sub!!
Probably just take time but its good pay when I get there-nights and weekends and summer off!!

I was hangin out there the other day and everyone seemd really nice! A lot of kidding and laughing.

Both jobs are about 10 minutes away. I do not have to watch traffic reports!!

All things considered this is not how I planned it out however the goal after the holidays was to explore jobs over in my new state so perhaps the powers that be know more than I do LOL!!

It would be worth checking with your car insurance provider to see if they'll reduce rates since your mileage will be so much lower. You might discover it's another benefit of eliminating the long commute.

Sounds like a dream come true...more hours...but perhaps at a job you will enjoy more...35 hours a week....that's a lot...might be hard to figure in the school job.

All in all its been a fun and tiring weekend!
So far I worked 7 1/2 hours Friday, 9 hours Sat and 7 hours yesterday...today is supposed to be 7.

Its retail so its busy...I have 2 days off in a row tomorrow and Wed and then working similar hours until next Wed.

Everyone has been super nice!! I felt at home right away!!

I am starting to second guess the caf job now. I am still going to go thru the paperwork to start working and just play it by ear thru the holidays.

Wow , you have good stamina to keep up with that schedule since it certainly doesn't sound like a desk job. I simply could not be on my feet that long. I guess grocery store work keeps you in shape.

I would so much rather be crazy busy than bored. Glad it's working out.

It all sounds really good Susie. I'm with Carol on checking on your insurance to let them know you're not driving so far. I think it's great you're at least having the cafeteria application things go through. That way even if you want to check it out in the future you'll have a starting point to go with. Plus you have your 4 weeks paid vacation from the old job. Of course you were due that anyway but still it's a bit of lagniappe.
