Welcome Madison Elizabeth

OK, as most of you know, she arrived via C-section last Tuesday night. The proud parents have posted a zillion pictures on Facebook (which I don't do and am never going to do), but haven't emailed them to me yet.

However, Gerber Memorial Hospital has "Lullabye Lane", which posts pictures of the babies born there, and sure enough, there is Madison. Here's the link:

I'll post more when I have time to breathe, I promise, but Elery's Christmas is Saturday and he's on midnights so I'm doing the three hour drive, cooking, cleaning up and driving back this weekend. next week I have cookie baking with the girls, including Madison, and the family is coming to my house on Christmas Eve, I guess, Mother's request.

So, about December 26, maybe.....

Queen Elizabeth and Intrigue roses

I live in Central Illinois and QE has been in the ground for 15 years. She's very hardy and reliable, and gets absolutely no winter protection other than the wood mulch in the bed. I'm not sure about Intrigue's hardiness; I planted a grafted bareroot last year and I haven't checked to see I have any green cane left. It's still so darn cold on most days that I haven't ventured out much to disturb the roses. Intrigue only put out a few blooms, but I really loved the deep purple color. It wasn't as vigorous a grower as I would have liked, but others have also commented that it is slow to establish. Hope it survived the winter; I really liked it. If you purchase grafted roses, plant the graft 4-6" deep to aid in winter protection. I planted own-roots about that deep also last year, as an extra precaution. I'm glad I did; we had a couple of -22F days in January. Good luck on your move! -terry

I am also a great Lawrence fan. My favorite--and I think perhaps her most original book-is Gardening for Love, a very personal book about the market bulletins published at one time by State Extemsion services through the south and in which various folks, chiefly rural, offered varoius bulbs, seeds, and plants for sale or swap. Lawrence shows a respectful affection for some of the folksy voices heard in the various listings. Lawrence was a friend/acquaintance of the Mississippi writer Eudora Welty and after you read Gardening for Love you will understand the affinity. There is also another set of gardening essays by Lawrence's friend and fellow N. C. resident, William Lanier Hunt. I forget the title but it also has interesting info about gardening in your area and the same endearing, slightly old-fashioned casually genteel tone that Lawrence has. On unhappy days I retreat into my study with a cup of coffee or tea and a couple of Lawrence's books--they are very good company.

O anything but Sally! lmao! That name always reminds me of that movie.."Sally, Sally, we want you Sally" lol. what the heck was the name of that movie..where the man and woman move into a new house, and the little creatures come up from the depths in the basement..she's in the shower and they shut off the light..that part was what got me when I was a kid..I always thought there'd be a critter in the medicine cabinet ready to shut off the lights on me, lol. I thought it may have been 'Trilogy of Terror' with Karen Black, but now I don't think so.. Someone tell me, cuz its gonna drive me nuts. Rigo, if you read this, do you know? I know you like horror movies too..if no one answers i may have to start a new thread to ask, lol.

She is very beautiful indeed! You must be very happy, and especially to have a healthy granddaughter.

BTW, my brother in Texas (who is almost your twin) will be getting his second granddaughter today or tomorrow - through induced labor, but not C section.
