Daniel's big adventure.

My other child, Daniel, has spent the last few months in Southern California living on and rehabilitating a sailboat for a long cruise down the coast of Mexico, then to French Polynesia, to conclude in Hawaii. The trip is expected to last at least six months.

When he isn't busy working his tail off he takes photos of the boat progress and keeps a blog. I thought I'd share:

I neglected to mention that he is doing so under the capable tutelage of my good friend, Dan, who is also Captain of the boat and mentor to my son.

Hey! My son did the same thing, almost! A few years back he and his then girlfriend bought a wood sailboat and spent many months restoring it. They sailed it down the coast of CA (from Ventura) to the bottom of Baja CA in Mexico.

After the relationship ended, my son sailed alone to Central America a few times. He has some amazing stories to tell.

He learned to sail when he lived in Fiji. If you ever see the (really awful) movie called Return to the Blue Lagoon -- the sequel to the Brooke Shields movie, you would see my son playing one of the sailors on the ship. The movie company hired the ship where he worked to be in the movie, and he got to be an extra.

Your kids are just so amazing. Says a lot about their mom. It's so good to see young people living life to the fullest. Go Daniel, go.

Can you tell from my moniker - this is right up my alley? Thanks for sharing - this is a dream job and opportunity. I live in a sailing community - big time sailors pass thru here - amazing boats and boats you think are going to sink for sure. I am going to follow his adventure. I can't wait to have some time to read his blog. You should be very proud!!! Very, very cool! Thanks for sharing this.

That's a wonderful experience for a young boy Eileen! It will certainly give him many useful skills.

One of my sons-in-law had a similar experience when he was young, travelling for many months as a steward on a private yacht.
He gained not only nautical experience but also learned how to make a mean breakfast of freshly squeezed orange juice and eggs benedict.

I'll be checking out Daniel's blog.

Nice logo, "momma". (grin) And I really like the Big Bird radio too, LOL.

What an exciting adventure for Daniel, now I'm going to have to try to keep up with his blog and see where he goes and what he does.

Best of luck and safe sailing to him.

That's a fantastic way to see the world and to mature. We have an adult friend who sailed with her S.O. from Southern Calif to New Zealand. They had an amazing voyage filled with experiences most of us will never know, from tropical islands with tiny populations to gorgeous scenery that's unspoiled by tourism.
Additionally, a dear friend's son is also planning a major voyage on a medical mission ship. They're called the Floating Doctors and their mission is to bring medical treatment to many remote areas that do not have adequate or affordable options. You might have seen a story about them recently on CNN.
Bon Voyage, DANIEL!

How neat is that! What a great adventure. I'll be sure to follow his blog. I love it when kids take this time in their life to do something adventurous.
