Klutzy me had to have 6 stitches yesterday.

I should have stayed with the garden chores but decided to work on a craft project. I cut my index finger, left hand (good thing I am right handed) to the bone with an large exacto knife. Luckily no tendon, nerve, or blood vessel damage but boy did it bleed! The only way to stop it was to stitch it up. Also had to get a Tetanus shot. I couldn't remember the last time I had one. Everyone is suppose to get one every ten years.

I blame the accident on my Parkinson's. My right hand is not as steady and shakes. (On my 3rd kind of pills, but so far nothing works to stop the tremors.) DH says he is going to hide all the knives and sharp tools. LOL. You don't realize how much you use and need your index finger. I am suppose to not use it for a week to 10 days, than have the stitches out. I keep unconsciously trying to use it than get a painful reminder. Man that hurts! I knew when it was happening that I really did something dumb.

Oh Clare....so sorry. Those Exactos are razor sharp, a cut can happen in an instant!

Hopefully the pain will go away soon and you'll be back to crafting in no time!

Aw, that's a shame. Glad it wasn't worse. I have a paper cut on my right index finger and a tiny cut on my left index finger from a food processor blade. They are so annoying. Stuff gets in them and makes them sting. I am sure your cut must be exponentially more bothersome! Hope you heal quickly.

Not only no perfume, but avoid scented personal products of any sort, whether they are soaps, deodorants, skin lotions, cosmetics, hair products, the like. She should always choose the unscented version not matter how pretty the scent of the scented version is. The side benefit is that when she goes out in the evening she can put on her favorite perfume and not worry about conflicting scents getting in the way of the scent she has chosen to wear. Sometimes people wear so many contrasting perfumes they cancel each other out. BTW - my daughter took Benadryl for a while because of severe allergic reactions. I noticed she was becoming very sad. Her allergist told me that Benadryl is a beta blocker, which meant nothing to me, but apparently it can affect a person's mood. It also makes people very drowsy, so she should not drive when she is taking it. For long term use I believe there are better medications, but Benadryl is easily and conveniently available when one needs something quickly. And in an emergency, nothing is better than the Epipen. It can save a person's life and give him time to get to the hospital. I wish your mother a quick recovery and a happy return to her garden. Rosefolly

The crystal really does help bounce some wonderful light around the room, which it needs-- it's usually a bit dark in my diningroom. I had been thinking of Judith's marvelous pink and crystal Christmas table. It's such a delight! Mine is doing a bit of a crystal, green and gold thing at the moment... I usually forget to hold my bobbin thread toward the back when I start sewing (I have a new Viking Emerald 118). And then I get that horrible little nest of thread on the back!! I hate that. Mary I want to thank you for mentioning your idea; I will do that from now on. This idea goes down as one of my favorite ideas that I learned from this great forum. My mom had unexpected surgery yesterday

My mom is 80 years old and is now going to a Skilled Nursing Unit for 10-14 days. She will spend one more night in the hospital. I talked to the surgeon yesterday and come to find out she did not have a twisted intestine but a tumor that was blocking the intestine. The surgeon felt like it was a cancerous tumor and that he got it all and that they are still waiting on pathology. My stepdad showed up at the hospital this morning prepared to take her home, but he was sent back home. Today I have been on the phone a lot with the case manager, a lady from the Skilled Nursing Unit and my step dad. My step dad thinks I am trying to run their lives. Somehow I ended up as the contact person instead of him and that has made him mad. I'm looking out for my mom though, not if I can please him.

6 stitches - oooch! I hope it heals quickly. Lately I seem to be hurting myself frequently doing stupid things and I am tired of it!!!!!

Clare, I'm sorry about the stitches and the tetanus shot. I stay pretty up to date on the tetanus booster, my doc always checks because I always seem to be hurting myself.

Most of my injuries come from hurrying and trying to do something fast. Funny how injuring yourself slows you down.

You sure don't know how much you use a body part until it hurts every time you use it, do you?

mustangs & Anne - Thanks for well wishes. Actually the shot to numb my finger hurt more than the razor cut or stitches. I was just so mad at myself for doing such a stupid thing. DH was more upset and concerned about the whole thing than I was.

I'm so glad that your DH was there to help you. I get knife cuts from time to time, and I could have had stitches on the last one, but we were able to bandage it well enough, and I had leftover Percodan from a dentist visit. I use a utility knife in my work instead of an Exacto knife, and I find it easier to control and avoid accidents. Maybe you should try using a larger knife.

That's definitely a bummer, Clare. The pain, aggravation, and inconvenience must be driving you nuts. I'm sorry that happened to you. I hope you heal quickly.

Lars & Sally - Thanks for the get better wishes. It is really fun trying to type. I use all fingers, after years of using a typewriter (remember those), now I have to do a combination of styles. Slow and frustrating.

Clare, I'm sorry too that you had that accident and needed stitches. I'm sure it wasn't fun and that your DH was more concerned than he let you know.

I hope you start to hurt less and that it heals quickly.

Lar's idea to try a larger knife sounds like a good idea - certainly it would be easier to hold.

Clare, I cringed when I read your post. I hope the pain has eased up today.

Depending where the cut is, there is a support that you can get to put over your finger to protect it. Just goes right over the bandage. I know from experience that it helps, especially when trying to type with a bad cut.

Lee and Ann - Thanks for the get well wishes.

The nurse just put 2 strips of what looked like heavy duty packing tape on it. Gave me a couple of strips and said to change it if it came off. I think the stuff is going to be stuck there forever. It got a little dirty but can't change it, won't come off. Hope the doctor can get it off.

Sorry that you cut your finger, the most sensitive part of your body. I hope you will not stop the use of the knife, but get a cut resistant glove instead. You can buy just one glove and it is not expensive.

A quick tip if you cut your finger, left your hand up as high as you can, the bleeding will stop.

Ugh and Ouch! DH cut his finger with an exacto knife years ago. Bled so much I didn't know whether his finger was falling off or what, LOL. (Did you know that dried blood on linoleum turns into a fine dust? True.)

gina w - Thanks for the well wishes. I dripped on DH's workshop concrete floor and it stains. Dear dog, Elvira, tried to clean it up. Can we say Ewwww!

Cutting fingers - story of my life, ack. I keep bandaids and those finger cots in the kitchen so I can wrap up and keep cooking :p
