Philly Area Holiday Lunch - are you up for it?

Hey all!

One of our own and I discovered that we live only a few minutes apart! Of course, we could plan for just the 2 of us to have lunch, but we thought it would be fun to organize a CF lunch sometime between now and the end of the year. Weekends are probably better - and I know how quickly they fill up during the holiday season.

Is anyone interested in either Sat/Sun December 6/7 or 13/14? As of right now I can pencil in any of those days for a brunch/lunch get together.

I can do Dec 6 or 7. I am all booked up on the 13th and 14th. I think you should post a link to this thread in the discussions side..I don't know if everyone looks at the conversations.

If its a Saturday then I can request off anytime I wish so long as I give 2 weeks notice. Sundays are another story.

I only get one Sunday off per month and that would be Nov 30th-next one would be Dec 28th.

That being said I would love to do a Philly area get together!! Been awhile eh??

Are you planning on hosting or having lunch out??

Lars it seems there is no one chart which describes the temperatures accurately here as there is such a difference from one end of the island to another. The south is much warmer and Santa Cruz - the capital city about a half hour drive from here on the east coast - has another temperature range again. Here's the official temps for Santa Cruz from the Spanish Office of the Environment: Coldest month Dec....mean temperature is 66.2 F. (19C) Warmest month Aug.....mean temp is 77F. (25C) Yearly mean temp is 70.16 F. (21.2C) That's taken from a study 1971 to 2000. Another range of temperatures comes from the north airport - Los Rodeos, and still another from the top of the volcano area. Sufficient to say that it's shirtsleeve weather during the day most of the year - except when it rains, or if you're hiking up on top of the mountain when there's snow LOL. One of my ex-work colleagues in Ibiza lived for years in Costa Rica and her sons now live permanently in San Jose. She told many stories of her interesting life there. One of my cousin's sons has also settled somewhere in Costa Rica. I hear many Canadians have retired there because of the beautiful climate and peaceful life. Lars if you like hiking then this is hikers' paradise. Our German friends love coming here and spending many days climbing all around the ravines and the volcanic area. There are many hiking groups here which organize and transport folks with buses to the main starting points for hikes from the easiest to those reserved for experienced alpine climbers. It is a common daily sight to see people walking around wearing German hiking shoes, shorts, walking poles and knapsacks. They will have just come off a bus after having been somewhere up in the mountains. The large older crater area at the base of the volcano is called "Las CaÃ±adas" and it has an amazing lunar-like landscape, part of which was used in filming the original Planet of the Apes. You can see plenty of images of that on this Google image link. Teide is the name of the volcano. There was a cable car which ran nearly to the top which may still be in operation. My brother once took it and walked right up to the existing crater where it was hot, and the air was thin. Another beautiful hike is to the mountain hamlet of Masca. (Click to enlarge the photo at top left corner.) There the roads are so steep that I am nervous even driving in a car. There's a very steep hike from there down to the sea, where a small boat will pick up the hikers, but it's really for only the most experienced mountain climbers. Needless to say I haven't done that myself but I love to see the photos LOL. Ilisa I think everyone is feeling the cold right now even in Europe. drewem, are you sure it's not? Usually every thing in the house is for sale with these sales, including shrubs outside. They tend to sell off everything before demo of the entire home. Of course there have been times when the structure isn't coming down. They will probably have a complete listing when they know more details.

I cook for DH, myself and the kids. I always make monkey bread in the morning. Kids can open stocking while it bakes. I sprinkle powdered sugar on it and call it snow. Pot roast is our tradition for Christmas dinner, which will be served mid-day, neither lunch nor dinner, around 2:00. In between I put out munchies- crackers, cheeseball, cheese cubes, deviled eggs, grapes, pepperoni... We open under-the-tree gifts while the roast cooks. If they get hungry in the evening, we pull the leftovers out. We end up playing a lot of games and watching some movies, so the rest of the day after the meal is laid back. I like having all the work behind me by then, relax the rest of the day. I do not have a traditional Christmas Eve meal. Depends on how busy I still am, sometimes it's pizza! ;o) I'm OK this year, so I plan to put a pork roast (actually almost 4 lbs worth) in the crock pot tonight, let it cook all night, shred it up tomorrow dinner. Between that and Christmas day leftovers, we'll eat Sat and Sun, too. That's my plan. I really do not enjoy all this cooking. If I didn't think it would disappoint DH and kids, I would not do it. I'd find someplace that serves dinner Christmas day and go out! Oh, that would be so much nicer! Make a reservation, we'd all dress up and go out together, no cooking, no clean up. I resent the work, the time it takes to do it compared to the time it takes to consume it... Not worth it. I feel unappreciated.

Great idea! Right now any of those dates are open for me.

I presume we will meet at a restaurant, or some place holiday-ish?

I hope Cloudy Christine, Traceys and Lpinkmountain will consider this, although they all have to come from a bit of a distance. Who else? I am in the western suburbs, Montgomery Co, Main Line area.

I am actually in the Philly area on Saturdays as I teach in the mornings at Temple Ambler. I haven't contacted anyone because to be frank I'm usually up all night Friday preparing for class so after teaching I need to head home ASAP to sleep. But I could maybe get together if I had time to take a little nap first. Or on a Sunday.

Certainly Peddler's Village would certainly be a fun holiday outing and the weekend of the 6th/7th is the Christmas Festival!

The other option is I would happily host it at my house any of the dates listed.

Great idea, Alexa! It would be a lot of fun to get together again, but I don't think I'll be able to make it this time.

Peddlers Village is a great place any time of year but during the holidays it just becomes magical...and crowded!! LOL!!
It might be a challenge to get a table and be allowed to linger after eating, suppose New hope would also be crowded as well.

If you wouldn't mind a drive into the city, I could host lunch. I have seating for 8-10 at my table!!
But you just never know if my house sells then I'll be out a here!!

Either way just let me know when you finalize the date.

Susie - that is so sweet of you, but with your house being on the market I woud hate to put you out with having to entertain when there may be an open house scheduled or something.

We can all certainly come to my house - lots of parking, plenty of room and I may even have all the summer stuff packed away by then!

Sun. works better for me that Sat., although I can come Sat. afternoon. I just need time to take a nap after my class ends at 12 PM. Last week I slept in my car because I was so tired I couldn't stay awake for the drive home! I was good to go by 3 PM!

Alexa, thank you for offering your home. I think its best for me to wait till I am settled in my new home and host the next Philly are get together.
That being said...please let me know if/what I can bring.

LPink-you can pick up the turn pike eastbound to the rt 1 exit (where we met 3 years ago) Take rt 1 morthbound to get to Newtown. Alexa can help you from there.

I am really getting excited now!!

I'm sorry to say that none of those dates are good for me and I am really disappointed - especially if Alexa is cooking, you're all in for a treat. It would be a reunion of sorts and I hate to miss it. We had so much fun together the first time!

oh how I wish I could be there. Having been hosted at Alexa's I can tell you she is a great cook and perfect hostess. Her DH and kids are just icing on the cake. Lovely folk.

BUT I sure hope you are going to Peddlers Village as well. Alexa took David , Woodie and I there, great cooking shop......but then there was the side trip to the other shop...LOL

Jealous as hell....

Sunday Dec 7th it is and does 1:00PM work for everyone?

I tend to be vey relaxed about entertaining and just go with the flow. Also - I will mention that I prefer snacks/tapas/nibbles to a full sit down lunch (otherwise I will want to take a nap and THAT isn't much fun LOL!) so how about if anyone wants to bring a snack/appy/thingy to share that would be awesome.

Also - about pressies.... I've emaaled with a few people and we all sort of thought that though we all adore each other, getting lots of gifts for everyone this close to the holidays will be difficult. Can we agree on either an upper spending limit or homemade or something like that?

The other possibility is we do a sort of secret swap - I can match up everybody and you only bring something for your particular person.

I am open to other ideas, but let me know what you think!

OH DRATS!!!

Looks like the one lady I "could" switch with has made plans on the 7th as well so I am left to just ask for the day off...being prime time its going to be a hit or miss kinda thing.

I am very bummed as this lady has asked for favors from me many time and I always oblige...time to start saying no to her!!

I will know for sure once the date nears...perhaps I can work early and just come to the get together a little late?

Nuts. We will be in the area around Thanksgiving week!

Did someone call my cell phone about this today? LOL I got a weird number that came up and looked familiar - I realized later it was from Doylestown but not from anyone I know there, and I live in New York now, so it was even more strange! Should have answered it. Oh well.

Y'all have a great time, I know you will. Alexa is a great host and I hope you get to meet her DH and boys....he is too cool and has some great jokes and the kids are something else.

About that shop...they did have some cooking related items. I remember the cookie cutters and the cake molds....lololololol!!

I have my fingers crossed that I will have off for at least a little while!

Oh darn Tracey. I was just thinking this morning that it would be nice to see you again. We are getting to be a close knit group, so I'm sure we'll do it again. Of course, close knit means there is always room for more CFers, local or visiting.
