Natural cleaner grease on kitchen oak cabinets

I'm looking for a cleanser, preferably homemade but if not, at least something "safe" as far as chemicals go -- to safely clean the grease off of areas of oak kitchen cabinets. I read that someone used a mix of baking powder and dawn liquid on the part of the cabinet where it gets the worst due to hands grabbing them over time... but then read that initially that works but then several weeks later affects the wood and the grain in the wood turns black....... Anyone used anything safely over time they would recommend?
Also, what do you use when you clean your cabinets on a regular basis? (not that I clean my cabinets on a regular basis, hence the post - but I'm trying to get better...)
