Say Hello to My New Kitchen! (pics)

Well, we did it! DH and I finally moved from Fla to Virginia, about an hour away from DC. This kinda explains why I haven't been on the CF for a long time this year...too much carp going on!

We've been here about 3 weeks now and I am LOVING it! The house we're in (we're renting now until we find something we want) has an amazing kitchen, which is one of the things that sold me to rent here. My last kitchen had the combined counter-space of my coffe table, so I'm in HEAVEN now!

So many possibilities. Getting used to the cold weather, this is my first real experience living through fall and winter. I'm definitely a cold/cooler weather gal than hot.

So, who are my neighbors up here from the CF?

Great pics, and I love to watch the little critters that visit the gardens! I spend hours contorting myself into strange positions to get pictures of the pollinators and other visitors. At first, the bees or butterflies seem skittish when I first appear, but after a few minutes, they seem to get used to this big human creature with a camera. They let me get very close sometimes. Here are a couple of the assorted bees that come to pollinate - Yesterday was very exciting, a female Monarch was alternating between nectaring and laying eggs on the Asclepias tuberosa and incarnata. Here she is nectaring - And here she is laying an egg - Can you spot the butterfly in this picture? . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Oh, here she is!

Hello from a fellow Puget Sounder! Hubby and I are currently researching the building of our dream home up on Whidbey Island (our property looks out over Saratoga Passage) and we have visions of a shingle sided cottage. Like you, we're hoping for low maintenance, and our research so far seems to indicate that if you pick the right shingles and if they are applied properly, they should easily last 30 to 50 years with little or no maintenance required. (We built a very nice arbor and fence 20 years ago with Alaskan yellow cedar; the wood has held up very well, despite lots of shade and rain, with no rot and without the need for stain or paint - we just allowed it to age to a nice silvery gray.) mtnrdredux, thank you sooo much for that link to the prior thread!!! We are in a similar situation in that there are reasons that we cannot have French doors because of light switches or cabinets/furniture on both sides of the doorway. We also considered the curtains pulled back solution but because we wanted to be able to control sound and preserve the view that didn't work out. The reason we are considering the piano hinged doors is that the wall between the 2 rooms is 12" thick so we have a wide cased opening that I think the door panels could fold flat against on each side. Since the opening is about 57" wide by 8' high, I guess this puts us into expensive custom territory. Sorry for going so off topic on you but your project is very inspirational. It's been a year since we mostly finished and I've been too burnt out to work on final details. Thanks again.

Welcome to the "north", Kathy. You're still a long way from the frozen tundra of Michigan though, LOL.

Not too far from Elery's sister, though, so maybe I'll come and visit...

Lovely! Lots of room on that island. I have relatives near DC and in Richmond. No plans to visit though - the relatives came out here or we met up elsewhere recently.

MsAzadi hasn't posted in a while, she lives somewhere 'round there, as does kframe.

I'm a neighbor :) - Annapolis,MD. When you say you are located 1 hour from DC - is that on a good day? -LOL~have you noticed the traffic here???

LOL, Linda I took that pic before the madness of unpacking. Believe me, that pot rack is full now!

We love it up here, but eventually we'd like to buy a place with some property. That's why we're renting for now...learn the area and figure out we want to set roots.

Mago, we stay as faaaaaar away from the DC area as we can. Right now, DH has a 2.8 mile commute to work, how sweet is that?

I the meantime, I'm having an affair with this kitchen!

Kathy, I was just talking about you yesterday!! Honest.

I'm glad to hear that you have been up to fun stuff. We will be waiting for reports what that wonderful kitchen turns out. When I first got my granite counter tops, I wanted to do...well do stuff on them, go for it.

Kitchen envy, kitchen envy!! What a dream come true. My current kitchen is the same way and your old one, there are coffee tables with more counter space. All I have to do to mess it completely up is make a sandwich. I love the area next to the patio doors, with the open shelves and a place for me (oh oops! I mean YOU!) to hook up your laptop and login to CF and keep us updated on your cooking projects!!

Gardengrl...Welcome to NOVA! It sounds like we live pretty close to each other. I live outside DC off of I-66. Are you that way, too? There are a few others who live here, too, but I can't remember them off the top of my head.
