Where's CanaryBird Sharon?

I'm just worried since Wolf was ailing recently. I'd much prefer if she was on holiday in Canada. Hope all is well, dear one!

She just posted yesterday on Cathy (mustangs) birthday thread. But I notice she hasn't posted on the current WFD.

Newyorkrita, I went out this morning and measured blooms. Majority of them are 2.5", some are bigger and some are smaller. Yorkrose, I personally would never put clematis on this rose, but this is just a matter of what you want. IFor me signifact part of this rose charm is due to its open AIRY growth habbit. These dark chocolate, glossy, arching canes are so beautiful, you really don't want to hide them. This rose looks good all year round, but hips anre nothing special. It has nice fall leaves color and the canes are beautiful in winter. Never gets any kind of disease. I don't know if it suckers, my plant is grafted. Thank you, Olga; that is very generous of you. The canary bird from Hortico looks more like what I'm looking for than the Rosa Xanthina Spontanea from other sources (more like Hugonis?) as it is a brighter yellow, compared to a more cream-yellow from other sources. Might the last Saturday in April work? I will be going to Sherando Roses to pick up a number of roses (before Randall retires in June); would you like for me to pick up a rose from there for you at that time? I don't believe his website presently works, but there is cached information available for selection. Or perhaps a certain purple gallica-centifolia cross I will be picking up at that time (if you'd care for a cutting of it)? I don't think he presently lists it as presently available....

LindaC, I don't care where the artist lived, or why he painted anything. I just want to know if he will paint the cabinets. I didn't say it was fun painting cabinets, I said I was going to do it. I hate to paint and I hate to decorate even more than I hate to paint. I do like white. It's clean, it's easy and it goes with everything. Plus, I want to sell the house. I told Elery that if there was going to be any color, he'd have to choose it. Then the realtor informed me that most people don't want color, they want neutrals so they can cover them easily and choose their own colors. That's why they call it "realtor beige". the high point of tearing out that wall was finding out that under that butt ugly striped paneling was drywall, so I don't have to build another wall, just paint the one that is there. Well, that and getting rid of the wall that I hated. Striped blue, brown, gray and cream. Ugh. I'm excited about FINALLY starting to do something about getting these houses ready for sale, I just hope they sell quickly so I can move the heck out! eileen, I'd like the interesting little cafes, although I don't usually eat breakfast, it would be lunch for me. I like to wander off by myself too, but that drives Elery nuts, he's sure I'm lost or mugged or eaten by some animal that I just had to get a little closer to. But he's not interested in the seals or the sea turtles on South Padre. he wants to sit and relax and by gosh, I need to learn to relax too. It's both funny and annoying. I can tell you how cold the water was and how the sand felt on my bare feet and what the coffee was like and how many people had dogs and what kind. I notice the breeze and the smell of the flowers and iguana on the rocks and that the aloe is blooming. To me a thousand sunsets are all different but 152 paintings of people I don't know are all the same. I believe that nature is a far more talented artist than any human could ever be. I can't tell you about sunrises, though, because I'm not a morning person. (grin) So I'd LOVE to see Big Sur and Monterey and Point Lobos. And in about 3 days, I want to go home. Annie

Oh thank you for the compliment bz! As there are just the two of us I often steam our vegetables all together in the same pot, except when I do spinach or Swiss chard which needs its own large pot because it's so bulky when raw. I use normal pots with folding metal fan-type steam baskets. I start with the hardest vegetable which takes longest to cook, usually potatoes. But of course you can cook any hard vegetable faster just by cutting it into smaller pieces. I put about two inches of water in the bottom of the pot, put on the lid and turn on the gas stove. I peel the potatoes while that water is heating and by the time it's simmering, the potatoes are cut and ready, so in the pot they go. The next vegetable is usually carrots or yellow yams, or both. Peeled, cut and into the pot on top of the potatoes. Then will come a green vegetable, such as broccoli, leek, cabbage, green beans, since they take the least time to cook when sectioned, chopped or snapped. By the time the green veggies are in the pot there is little time left before the potatoes become overdone, so it takes a little practice in peeling quickly, cutting the vegetables the right size and estimating the timing so nothing is overcooked, and they're all ready at the same time. (The Secret Weapon - the oil can) Once done, I drain them and give them a fine drizzle all over with olive oil, sprinkle some sea salt and grind black pepper. Using a large slotted spoon I serve them out onto hot dinner plates with whatever meat or fish is on the menu and immediately put them down by my 'photo' window. Another tiny drizzle of oil to keep them looking moist, snap the shutter and take the plates to the dining table. I've been using olive oil nearly exclusively instead of butter on vegetables, as the Spanish do, and find that apart from being a healthy substitute, after a while it tastes and looks like melted butter. Sometimes I sprinkle a bit of chopped flat leaf parsley or dried herbes de provence on the vegetables. Most important I think is not to overcook vegetables and get them to the table still piping hot and moist. Good luck. SharonCb

Thanks so much Rob and Jessy for thinking of me!
Yes Wolf is bedridden at the moment and I'm caregiving until he gets better.
I have the help of a nurse for a while some days but I'm looking after him full time so it does make a big change in our lives.
I won't go into detail about his ailments here but I'm still hoping that he will be able to get up and walk around at some time in the future.

Dinners are still mostly homecooked but I'm serving his in bed in small portions and cut up, so they're not exactly photogenic LOL (glad I can still laugh.) :-)
I have joined him with dinner by sitting in a nearby chair and eating mine from a tray.
But I have also been having a quick bite at a restaurant or the sports club and bringing him home his favourite dishes.

I'm still checking out the forum on most days and haven't left, and will post a few photos of some dinners even if I didn't cook them. :-)
We had our friend from Germany over here for a few days staying at our house, so Wolf was able to talk with him and enjoy the company. I had already told our friend that he had to have his meals out or cook for himself as I had my hands full, and that worked out well as he didn't expect me to cater to him as well.

I have support from friends, our faithful cleaning girl, who offers her help outside of her cleaning days and (thank heavens for Skype) frequent rounds of family conversation with my daughters and brother in Canada, where we talk and laugh for hours. So I'm keeping my morale up and also thanks to twice weekly machine Pilates, staying physically strong too.
I won't let myself get depressed, but it is a new and worrying kind of life to be totally responsible for the well being of another person.

Life has many lessons to teach and I guess I'm back in class at this stage, going through a new experience.

I'm hanging in here, taking every day as it comes and glad that our life is still so much better than that of those poor people in other parts of the world devastated by floods, storms and earthquakes. Thanks for your kind thoughts. I'm still here.

Oh my heaven Sharon, how difficult this must all be for you and of course for poor Wolf. Thankfully, you are able to get some help and also get out a bit.

Take care of yourself, you're right, you have to stay strong.

I'm so sorry to read this Sharon, Wolf and you are in my thoughts and prayers. Chase is right, you do have to take care of yourself too. I'm glad you have support from family and friends and the extra help from the nurse and the girl who works for you.

Well phooey! I was so hoping it wasn't this. But we're here and (((you))) (the collective you) are on our minds. Godspeed in your recovery Wolf!!! You take care of him and get him strong enough to walk soon. I know your cooking can cheer him and feed him well enough for that; it certainly cheers me! Let me know if I can do anything. I miss you!

Oh dear, Sharon, I was afraid that I was going to see this when I opened the thread, I know you had mentioned that he took a fall and was injured.

I am so sorry to hear of Wolf's poor health. I too was concerned as I remembered you mentioning he was not well. I have always enjoyed your posts, pics and adventures. I recently made your red braised cabbage, and was going to post it on the new recipes thread hoping you would see it, as we loved it.

Sharon, my dear friend although we have never met....I feel so close to you through your posts and pics etc. I was so touched by your heartfelt words regarding my losing my dog Duke and now I hear that you have a dear husband ailing. I am so sorry and know that the powers upstairs will take care of Wolf and give you strength to help with his recovery. You are such a special person....and I am giving you both all of my prayers and good thoughts to help in this time of difficulty. Bless you for all of your good thoughts and comments over the years and I hope everything turns out to the positive for you and yours.

I'm sorry that Wolf is having these issues. He couldn't have a better partner to help him through this. Sounds like your support system is kicking in too. Just being in paradise should contribute to a speedy recovery.

Thank you all very much for your lovely kind thoughts and words. It is truly comforting.

I read this whole thread last night over a call to my younger daughter in Canada and it brought tears to her eyes and wonderment that there are so many great people here on the Cooking Forum. The moral support here is such a boost when one is feeling worried and a bit tired.

Sharon, I just now saw this.....I will add my best wishes for both of you. We never know what life brings and it is often difficult.

I'm trying to get him out of bed and walking again but he's still very weak.

However we are both in good spirits and working on getting him better so I can sign him up for the salsa dancing class. LOL.
