5 Years. What a long, strange trip it's been....

Went for my checkup today. The oncologist shook my hand, the nurse hugged me and said they hoped to never see me again. No more drugs, no more blood draws, no more three-month visits. Yesssss!

That means canning camp was five+ years ago...hard to believe...

That is fantastic to hear especially since we were together at Canning Camp when you shared the news. We need a "do over" so you will be fully focused-not that you were anything but engaging and fun.

Gandle, I am profoundly sorry for the loss of those buds. I know how important the lilac blossoms in particular are to you and Leonne, and I envy you your proximity to such a collection, even if it is an off year. I was actually thinking of you this morning on my garden walk with Izzy (pictured below). Your postings have forever linked you in my mind with lilacs, and my little dwarfs are just beginning to open up. It was raining ever so lightly, and the lilacs were opening in the background while my tree peonies were opening in the foreground. The smell was amazing. (It was strong and pleasant enough to even mask the scent of "Eau de Wet Dog.") There are three different tree peonies in this picture: The one in the background has purple-y foliage, the one in the foreground has green foliage and identical flowers, and there is one lone bud snaking up on the left... this is the plant that Izzy chewed to the ground when she was a little bitty puppy, and after nearly three years, it is finally blooming for the first time ever... I have no idea what color it will be. I am sorry I do not know the html coding to post Scratch 'n Sniff photos, or I would. I envy you your rhubarb success. I got some clumps from my sister a couple years ago from plants that have been in my family for generations. I shared them with a neighbor, who planted them in a pile of compost and now has an amazing crop, and planted mine and forgot to water them. They're still (barely) alive, but won't be harvest-worthy for at least another year. Again, I am very sorry about the frost damage. Those of us who experience winter to the fullest extent should be entitled to every aspect of spring too. The promise of impending seasonal euphoria is the one thing that keeps me going during the dark months. Perhaps this is nature's gentle way of making you rest your hands? Heaven knows you'd be picking fruit and flowers if they were there. Take it easy, and rest up for fall canning season! The cold may have zapped the apples and such, but you'll still have tomatoes, peppers, and all that lot to look forward to!

Hi Marleah! I'm glad you're enjoying your roses again. I'm sure your father would approve. There have been several nurseries lost the past few years but there are still many good ones out there. I'm not sure which ones you know of already so my apologies if I mention some of them here. I don't know which of these specialize in OGRs but here's a list of some I know of. Thanks for sharing your experience. It's so great to hear from others who have gone through the process. We are building a house out in the country, as well. We are planning on doing the back up generator (we are in wyoming) so it's nice to hear that it is worth the extra cost. We are not putting in a basement (the water table is too high on our property) but I do have some concerns about my laundry/mudroom. I don't know the dimensions but we ended up stealing space from that area to make our master bath even larger. In the end we are doing a stackable washer and dryer but that will leave me room for a big closet for coats, as well as, a smaller closet with a doggie door for the cat boxes. We will also have room for a bench/cubbie unit. I've worried that I will hate the stackable washer and dryer (I'm short and with 3 small kids they will be used alot) but I thought I'd appreciate the extra storage. The mud is ridiculous here but we've been living in a mobile home on our property for a year while we built so I'm hoping that just the extra space (3 kids, 3 cats, 3 dogs in less than 1100 square feet now) will help me look past the mud that will be inevitable for a long time. We are afraid to pave our road because my hubby worries he will just tear it up snowplowing with his tractor in the winter. And it's true that gravel is cheap (relatively) and can make a big difference. We are doing a playroom in the bonus space above the garage but otherwise our house is just one level - thank you so much for sharing.

Thanks, all. It's a tad bit strange to be pushed out of the I-am-closely-monitored nest (Linda, I bet you know what I mean), but I'm sure I'll get used to it.

Yay, Jude! We will have to clink when you get pushed out of that nest. And Sharon, it seems like we had similar treatment...I know you are right behind me!

I still go once a year...he says not only to have a look at me but to evaluate the total impact of various treatment regiemes on the health of the patient over the years.
But that 5 year mark was huge.....he said I didn't need to ever return.....but could if I wished.....and of course I wished.....don't take away my security blanket!
But it does seem that you do nothing but go to the Dr for a very long time. Surgeon, radiologist, oncologist, dentist, allergist, gynocologist....yadda yadda....

Hooray, Katie, I was waiting to hear that. But it's been five years already, it doesn't seem that long since we made David sit between us in the back seat of that car. What a great time that camp was.

Saw my BC surgeon for my 5 year check-up today and he said I didn't need to come back unless I just wanted an annual check-up, which I do!

I do believe in answered prayers.

That's says a lot when you recognize someone's kitchen without reading further! As you can see by the spread, Sheshebop is a great hostess. That was a great camp--well they all were.

Congratulations!

I'm impressed it didn't take you too awfully long to figure out, not having to go back constantly is also a strange new world. Seriously. It took me a bit, thinking, something's off-kilter? to want to keep going?! You and Linda are right, it does become a security blanket. But I have to say it--it's very reasonable to want to stay in the nest--very normal and right!

You're gonna be fine! Cool beans.
