With my car, that is....LOL

After my Toyota got broad-sided last October I was forced into rushing to buy a car so I could get rid of the rental and get myself to work and back. I bought a 2001 Ford Escape. It was a cute little SUV, and I loved the way it handled, but there were a few things I didn't really care for....the gas mileage being one of them. And....well...it wasn't my Rav!

So Saturday I went out "just to look". Test drove a few different cars and ended up driving home in this beauty! A 2007 Rav 4 that is fully loaded! This one is a bit larger than my old 1997, and it looks a little "minivan-ish", but it drives like a dream and I LOVE it!

It does look sharp in black. How exciting for you, Linda. New cars are so fun. I have a friend who just got a tan 09 Rav 4 last year and he's in love with it too... I rode in it and it was very nice. I've had Toyotas before (Camry and Corolla, never a Rav 4, though I've always liked the way they looked) and you really can't kill them! I knew you weren't crazy about the Ford, so it's great you finally got something you enjoy. Congrats!

I do not know about in a vegetable bed, but we had a neighbor's cat using a planter box near our front porch as a kitty-box. I am a cat lover, have three myself, but that was just gross and over the line. I went to TLC (an OKC garden store) and got some cat/dog deterrent granules. I don't know if it was safe for vegetable garden use, you may need to ask at the garden store or read the directions. It was a granule that was strongly lemon scented, and came in a shaker container. Just shake it over the bed at the frequency it said (I remember if it rained you needed to reapply) and within a few weeks, no more cat deposits. I also used it when all my neighbors were walking their dogs along our corner lot and not cleaning up after them - just sprinkled it in the grass to deter the little beasts. May be organic methods that work on the same principles that would be safe for edibles. It's not the type of thing to use in the house. They do sell bitter-apple type stuff to train your cats not to chew or whatever (one of ours loves to gnaw on the cable line) but I think she thought I was just adding seasonings. We spray-trained all of our cats. Keep water-filled spray bottles at hand and when they did stuff we didn't like, you just spray them. Worked to train them off the Christmas tree, clawing the carpet, etc. Like anything, takes consistency to see results. If you don't want the cat on the furniture, you might look into spray training. P.S., after the outdoor cat stopped using the planter box, I still couldn't shake the grossness, so shoveled out the top 5-6 inches of dirt and disposed of it and refilled with fresh dirt. I'm often gardening bare-handed and couldn't shake the feeling I might be bare-handing cat pee!

rosiequilts, I lost 50 pounds last year by calorie counting, which is just another way of saying "eating-loads-of-fruits-&-veggies-so-you-can-eat-the-most-food-with-the-fewest-calories". I learned to love vegetables! A pile of eggplant, onions, mushrooms & peppers with a little spaghetti sauce on just 2 oz. of pasta & 1/4 cup grated mozzarella is delicious & filling. Spaghetti squash can be substituted for the pasta (just put the spaghetti squash whole in a crock pot & it's done in 4-6 hours). For salads, I love to mix spinach, lettuce, diced raw green beans, carrots, celery, cherry tomatoes and use 1/3 cup dried cranberries for dressing, or sometimes green olives and a little of the olive juice in the jar. If fresh produce isn't on hand, then combining frozen veggies & cooking in the microwave is tasty: kale, lima beans & cauliflower, for example. Veggies in combination taste much better than just plain. In winter I enjoy turnip greens & squashes. Cabbage is a versatile veggie, good for filler in soups & stews, sauteed, microwaved, or sliced for low-fat cole slaw made with Splenda. For munchies, I love to microwave a tub of Brussels sprouts or cauliflower & keep it in the fridge for mindless snacking (you know, when you get those urges to eat but you're not really hungry). A little butter or oil won't hurt you and, in fact, makes the vegetables more nutritious. Your body absorbs the nutrients better when a little fat is present with the veggies. Sometimes I like to make a green sauce of chopped fresh spinach & French parsley in a little cream & parmesan cheese, heated in a sauce pot. I serve this over a big plate of broccoli & cauliflower, and it's delicious. There are so few calories in the veggies that you can afford to indulge in the cream sauce. But then, that's dinner -- no bread, no side dishes, no heavy meats. Anyway, didn't mean to hijack this thread. Just wanted to pass on some good veggie food ideas. When you walk through the cookie/cracker aisle with indifference, but your mouth starts watering when you get to the produce section, you know you've made a good change!

My neighbor has one and I always think it is such a cute car. I want a new car but my 1996 Honda just won't give up. Congrats on the new wheels.

LOL, Pam. My '97 Rav had 248,000 miles on it when it got hit, and it ran like a charm! I'd still be driving it if it wasn't for the accident!

Let's sse how this one runs after 13 years! LOL

Gorgeous car! Ain't it fun to get a "new" car? Mine will be paid off this month, so I am gonna keep it for awhile, so don't be giving me the new car bug Linda!

Yeah, I loved not having a car payment for the last 7 years, too. Unfortunately the woman that ran the red and hit me thought I needed more debt! LOL

She was ordered to pay me restitution, but in the last 6 months all I have gotten is $100. Methinks she will be spending some time in jail come April.

Think I'll go out and wax it....oh that's right, I did that last Sunday! hahahahaha

Congrats Linda! Looks very sharp. When my wife was car shopping two years ago I had her look at a Ford Escape. She didn't like it because it had no storage area for her umbrella! The RAV 4 had a perfect little compartment. She is funny.....only wanted storage, 4 wheel drive because they don't plow her work parking lot on weekends and gas mileage. She really liked a Hyndai too but the resale value compared to the Toyota was terrible.

I was just reading recently how we women shop for cars much differently than men. A place for a purse or an easy way to haul groceries (My 2002 RAV has some great hooks behind the back seat that hold grocery bags in place)is high on our list. :)

Wow, a lot of Rav owners on the forum....whodathunk!!!

What I was really looking for was a manual transmission, but it seems they don't make 'em much anymore. Both Toyota dealers told me "good luck finding one". I test drove a 1999 at a small lot that was manual, but the car had "issues".

Oh well.....
