Space Jump-Anyone else watching?

Discovery channel..it's live right now. Felix Baumgartner is a little over 1 1/2 hours into the ascent as I write this. I'm not sure what to make of all of it. I will say the pictures are amazing. Listening to all the technical aspects of the jump are completely fascinating to me. The craft, his suit, the chute...it's all fascinating. The kids are just...meh...they don't have the patience to wait until the actual jump.

Is anyone else watching?

I'm semi-watching. I pop in and out. I find video noise to be really distracting to have on the background so I turn it on every now and then. I'm pretty much in the same mode as your kids. :)

:)!! So, he just now broke the record for the highest altitude in a balloon. I wonder what they'll do if they don't fix the face visor problem?

Weve had issues with our new bosch dishwasher as well. First if all, the installation process is a pain-we had bought it to replace our old dishwasher which was fairly new but in order to install the bosch dishwasher, we had to have an electrician and plummer come to rewire and reroute/set up the water lines correctly for the thing to even run. Then we had issues with the power cord and had to have a technician come out and repair/fix that. I also hate how you cant control it/buttons arent accessible unless the door is open. There is inadequare space for dishes, doesnt effectively clean dishes even with high quality dish detergent, rinse aid, and meticulous placement of dishes. Lastly, its annoying how it gets stuck on auto and you have to reset the thing and rerun it just so you can switch to a different mode. I have used many different brands throughout my life-rented in my 20’s and early 30’s including whirpool and LG and never had issues.

I doubt very seriously that pulling the drawers out of the furnished work benches falls under the category of use stuff, that would mean the piles of woods available and nuts and bolts etc but not claiming that you made every thing in the project when he clearly had not. That question was even asked and he said yes he made everything, that was his chance to show some character and honesty and explain the situation but he lied there as well. So cheat, check, liar, check, absolute scumbag, check.! I think if they screw up and let him win it will be the end of the show, this was their second chance for many people, like me, there won't be another. I guess next season they will have to build new drawers for the person that gets Sef's station,since the work station now has none.

A related item i found yesterday: If any of you recognize the name William Safire, you'll remember him as a self-educated expert in the English language, words and word usage. For many years he had a column On Language in the NY Times. One position he held (that I won't necessarily forgive him for) was as a speech writer during the Nixon administration. Among his many accomplishments, he created the memorable phrase "nattering nabobs of negativism" that Agnew used to attack critics. Not an honorable task but a great phrase all the same. Back to the moon, Safire wrote a brief statement for Nixon to read to the press IN THE EVENT he needed to announce that the lunar lander was stranded and unable to return its two astronauts to Earth. Here's an article about it from the Washington Post and a copy of the speech. For me, the first sentence is an unbelievable creation of a genius, simple and very moving. The rest is pretty special too. I hope you like it. Safire's speech for Nixon, just in case needed.

OutsidePlaying, I can't imagine how anyone in or out of government could reasonably benchmark or assess rates of spending or overspending for the kind of work NASA historically did. It's completely a one-off activity. I'd be very willing to accept overspending on account of inept management or misplaced good intentions. But it was just shut down. NASA's work historically advanced the knowledge and understanding of the universe for all of mankind, the value of which is priceless as far as I'm concerned. I know the Mars rover missions were financed on a shoestring by design, I was working with a company that was involved. Use off the shelf components, make due with compromises, yada yada and the end results were pretty impressive. Great achievements by innovative and capable engineers. If you were in Huntsville, I spent a very interesting afternoon not too many years ago at the Space and Rocket Center. We were lucky enough to be approached by a docent looking for visitors to amaze. The guy turned out to be a real "rocket scientist", recently retired, who enjoyed sharing special insights and giving as if private tours to small, family-size groups, which we were. A most memorable experience. He was also well acquainted and knowledgeable about the Nazi rocket scientists (who worked on the German V1 and V2 weapons) the US Army snatched at the end of World War 2 who formed the core of American rocket expertise for decades, along with their leader von Braun. I'd just finished a book on the subject and was curious to know more. It's a story few Americans know and most should, especially those of us who lived through the early years of the space race and thought so many of the US's accomplishments were done by Americans.

Okay...he has reached the height! He's still climbing, much slower, though. It has been fascinating watching the balloon inflate.

Off to watch on the big TV now as they try to control the ascent.

I watched the jump. Gotta tell you, it took my breath away to watch him step out of the capsule.

Me, too, Barnmom! Those shots...looking down at Earth from standing on the ledge....amazing! I was nervous a couple of times from just before he stepped out and didn't seem to respond...to the time he seemed out of contact on the way down. But what a beautiful descent. Still in awe! :) The kids did perk up and really enjoyed the actual jump!

Thanks for the heads up! I'd forgotten about the jump. I just caught it - switched from NFL to watch. I don't do that for just any ole event! :) Amazing.

It sounds like Felix's face mask fogged up, so he didn't see it either. That took guts to do. Glad his guts didn't end up splattered all over the place.
