Coach Went Down...

mustangs81

Raymond wasn't feeling well but insisted on going to Beau's (8 year old) football game. At half time he said he wanted to go home. He got up from his chair, blacked out, fell back without benefit of bracing himself, hit the concrete with his head.

He woke up and couldn't figure out why all these people were looking down on him, he didn't recall anything. EMT was terrific in explaining why he couldn't drive in our car to the hospital...really Raymond??

Fast forward 3 days of hospital care--after many tests and specialists they still don't have an answer for what happen. The defibrillator in his chest didn't go off so they don't think it was heart related. His bad kidneys, heart, gout, diabetes...pick one at this point. They did give him 3 more prescriptions (total of 17!) which scares me more than anything as I am anti-pharmaceutical (the real drug cartel).

He always said he hoped that he didn't need care because I am a terrible nurse (he calls me Nurse Ratched). Now he's not the HG (house guest) he's the patient. That's okay, cause he's my guy either way.

We are scheduled to leave for Europe in 5 weeks, we will see. When he suggested the trip last year he said he wanted to go "one last time". I begged him not to say it that way.

I know I have your supportive thoughts and prayers for my guy's recovery.

Wow-- scary! Yes, you and he definitely have my positive, best, get-better-fast-and-stay-that-way thoughts.

Raymond is kinda hot (in the va va voom sense). Nice pic.

Seriously, hope he is back on his feet soon and that you two can take your not-last trip to Europe as planned.

Oh, dear, Cathy, that's very worrisome. I'm glad he's home, but not knowing what caused it is scary.

You know that you have all my prayers and good wishes for Raymond and for you and the family, hoping that The Coach is on his feet and ready for your trip to Europe, just one of many trips to come.

Oh, Cathy, am so sorry to hear that Raymond has been sick. What an awful episode and a bad head concrete meetup (ouch ouch!). He sounds like a tough cookie who doesn't want any sympathy and also has a pretty good sense of humor. He sounds like a person I would like a lot, and he is kind of hunky, too. But then from brief cf posts, I really would like you, too.

I do wish you both lots of good health and a speedy recovery so you guys can go back to Europe. Lotta ball games are waiting for you. Best regards,

My heart sank when I saw the title of your post. Just tell hunky Raymond to mind his nurse, his doctors and his pharmacist so he can get back on his feet and stay there! Beau and Lily have more games to cheer and certainly more vacations to enjoy. I am assuming that the trip is heading to Italy, but no matter the destination, I'm sending loads of healing thoughts, prayers and juju his way!

Sending prayers and good thoughts your way. I know how the unknown can be very scary. Hoping they find the cause and can prevent it happening again.

Thanks to each of you for your support. I came here to share as not too many people are aware of the incident. While the Patient doesn't have a big ego, he doesn't want to be seen as weak for his players' sake. And BeauLily still don't know Pa is sick.

He is home and has been bed-ridden and walking with a cane when he does get up. But still no feedback from 3 doctors as to the cause.

Yup Ellen, we are flying into Rome with a side trip to Spain.

Maddie, we are overdue for lunch.

I'm so sorry that happened to him, Cathy, and to you. Maybe he stood up too fast. I get light headed sometimes when I stand up too fast, or if I'm bending over for some reason, then straighten up quickly. With him not feeling well, it could have been exaggerated. I don't know, though, just guessing.

I hope he gets better soon, so y'all can go on your trip.

So sorry to hear this, Cathy. Without a clear diagnosis it must be very scary for you both. Best wishes for his speedy recovery so you can both relax on your European trip.

Oh Cathy I am so sorry to hear of Raymond's episode. I can't imagine how cranky he must be is being bedridden. Also could not imagine a better nurse. Maybe is you got a
" little uniform" it might perk him up.....but be careful with that too ;)

Give him a big hug from me and a high five from Clive....and a great big hug to you from both of us.

PS: We are back in Florida from Jan1 to April 1...so tell him he better be ready for a visit our way!

My sweet Cathy I am so sorry that you and Raymond are going through this.... I'll send my bestest thoughts of healing and love your way...

Is he following orders or being stubborn? I bet you're a pretty no nonsense kind of nurse. How are the cats responding to him being in bed?

Hope you get answers sooner than soon and remember I'm only an hour away if you need anything!

Sally, He does get a little lightheaded when he gets up but nothing like this.

Robin, Thanks for the honeymoon suggestion. He did remind me that we had a milestone anniversary last week (I told him not to tell me which one).

Colleen, I will tell Ray that he has best wishes from Australia!!

Sharon, I'll pass on the high 5 but he could probably only manage a fist bump. Great, I look forward to meeting up with you both!

Oh my sweet Bobby, thanks for the thoughts. Kitties are avoiding Raymond; too much drama.

Love you all, you have really helped.

    Thanks for the emails.

Cathy, how's the patient doing? I know it must be frustrating for such a strong guy to be stuck in bed and dependent on someone else fore care... still thinking of both of you... hopefully, soon, he will return to being the HG and depending on you once again for things like how to run the microwave!

How's his appetite by the way?

    More hugs....

Cathy, I'm glad I read this...well, you know what I mean, I'm certainly not glad to read that Raymond is having a bad time! My best to you both and I'll put you in my prayers. I'm sure they will be able to figure out what is going on and be able to fix it.

Thanks all. Two doctors' appointments today, neither offered relief or prognosis. He forbid me from going into the doctor's office fearing that I wouldn't be civil. So I wrote a snarky note on his list of meds, knowing that Raymond wouldn't notice it.

At this point it's a toss up over who is worse, the patient or the caregiver!

*I had to sneak a walker into the house today offered by a neighbor.

  • dedtired

Sneak a walker into the house?? Vanity, thy name is Raymond. Maybe if he takes another tumble, he'll give the walker a try.

I have a friend with a very bad hip. She is undergoing chemo and cannot have hip replaced yet. The docs have warned her the hip could go at any time -- use a walker! Does she? Noooo.

Hope he is soon steady on his feet and you two are off to Italy.

  • annie1992

I also just came to check in, darn it I was hoping there was some good news, or at least the news that something had been identified and treatment was scheduled.

Tell Raymond to just use the blasted walker, sheesh. As for the docs, nope, I wouldn't have been civil either. Not that I would have cared what they thought.

Cathy I am late to the party as usual, but I did want to add my healing thoughts to the long list of those of us that care very much for both you and Raymond.

I hope you get a DX soon, I think that is the hardest part....not knowing what or why.

I am confident he will be well and in fine form for your upcoming trip. How exciting!

    I haven't checked Conversations lately.

Cathy, I'm so sorry to hear that Raymond is having health issues. Hope the doctors figure out soon what the cause of the problem is and that Raymond is well enough in time for your trip to Italy. Sending good thoughts your way.

Cathy, I'm just back from being away. I was hoping you had some answers by now. Maybe the thought of your trip to Italy will make Raymond behave and rest up. I'll be thinking of you both.

  • sally2_gw

They should make walkers look cool, like put racing stripes on them or something. I guess it's hard to figure out how to make a walker look cool, but there's got to be some way.

I sure hope they figure out what's wrong.

  • mtnester

After the doctors rule out all the other possible causes, they may come to the same conclusion that Sally suggested--positional hypotension (temporary low blood pressure from getting up too quickly)--or low blood pressure due to one of his other meds. It's good, though, that they aren't jumping to that conclusion without checking for and eliminating the other possibilities.

In any case, I wish Raymond a speedy recovery, and I hope he'll get the "all-clear" soon, so he can travel. A trip to Italy must certainly be a wonderful incentive to follow doctor's orders and heal quickly. Hang in there, Nurse Ratchit! ;-)

Cathy, I just found your post. I've not been over to Conversations in a bit, feeling really awful and have only managed 10-15 minutes on the other side every couple days.

Gosh, so sorry to read about the HG. It's not fun to not know the cause. Your mind wanders to every conceivable thing and that's not good.

Something very similar happened this summer to a marina friend of mine and it was positional hypotension. It was a hot, humid day and she was sitting in her lounge chair on deck reading...right in the sun. When she got up - over she went and scared the beezeesums out of everybody near. She went to ER by ambulance and they had her rest for a couple days at home and out of the sun. She's fine. Hopefully, it will be something simple like that for Ray. Ray and you both will be in my prayers and thoughts.

Hopefully, you soon be off on your Italian trip taking lots of pictures to share with us.

Take care and sure hope you hear something from the doctors this week.

Sherry, you have been on my mind lately. You said you wanted to go back to Europe and to let you know if I ever went. Well, if Raymond isn't getting around any better than he is today, then I don't know how he will go on the trip. So I might...well, I'm not going there now.

Update, he went to his wound care doctor today. I asked Raymond to please ask the doctor for some guidance e.g. What would you do doc? Here is the doctor's response, with a cock of the head and a hummmm "I have heard of gout." Are you kidding me??

Anyway, we think since his kidneys are at 30%, he isn't flushing out the uric acid that would ease the gout attack. Our EMT friend suggested that he suggest to his doctor to have dialysis to rid him of the acid among other things.

  • triciae

Cathy, are these problems all diabetes related?

If so, shoot me an email please. My DS is Type I and his career is in assisting other diabetics. Have a couple thoughts I'd like to share.
