Really scary?!?!

So you all know I have these 2 wee small dogs, heck if your on FB you see I post a ton of pics.

They are really easy going and easy to care for! I just love them to pieces!

We got them at 10 weeks so they already had the first vaccines. Then of course we took them right to our Pa vet and they got the second round.

They got the final round while they were in for their surgery.

All went well!

So now they are due for rabies, lyme distemper.

I.ve been using Banfield and I love the vet!

Yesterday was Abbee's day. She needed her ears checked and all 3 vaccines.

Well she was fine...really good however on the ride home she was howling and crying the most gut wrenching sounds. I just thought her injection sites were hurting since she/they both really love the car!

Then she just stopped. I figured she was tired.

Got home only to discover her unresponsive in her crate!.i ripped the top off the crate and grabbed her. I suppose grabbing her jolted her just a bit and she began breathing but it was slow and very labored. Her eyes were open but rolled back and she was totally limp.

Frank called the vet who said I should watch her for 30 minutes. So I did.

About 15 minutes later she started to come around....very.slowly over the next hour she improved until she seemed fine.

The vet tech called during and said some dog breeds have issues with vaccinces.

So she is really fine today...totally normal! But I have an appt w the groomer at Banfield tomorrow and the vet tech wants to see her before.

Ok so is this normal?

You know I freaked out so I read what I could.

Just read that small dogs should never get more than one vaccine at a time! So now im pissed!

I have Apollo scheduled for his round in 2 weeks!

Any words of advice??

Never saw this with any other pet ive had however I have held very sick animals until they passed and thats exactly what I felt like holding my sweet Abbee girl! I was so scared!

Oh Susie, how awful for you and for Abbee. I know how much you love those two little doggies. I'm so glad she was able to shake it off. I'd think twice about taking Apollo to the same place.

I'm finding more and more people that believe that it's never a good idea to get all the vaccines at one time. It's also believed that the 3 year rabies vaccine is the one that's associated with cancer.

It's not necessarily the vet's fault, though. My co-worker's dog is allergic to the parvo vaccine. They ddn't know it at first, but she got sick every summer - very sick, the last time while they were traveling. They vet they took her to determined that she was reacting to the parvo vaccine. Now she can't have that vaccine any more.

Now we are talking about legs. Strange, but i've looked and i've looked and never seen a decent pair of legs on a guy. They are either knobbley and naked or hairy and horrible. YUK. Convert 20K to Miles? Approx 20000 x 39 inches =780000 inches inches to feet.divide by 12 = 65000 feet Divide by 5280 to get miles 12.31 Not very far. You are lucky that i can do these old time maths. Just proves how old time i am. But we (the dragon woman and i) had trouble with road signs in the UK. The sign said 3 miles to Little Wopping on Toad and our strine brains could never come to grips with how far 3 miles is. So we would drive on thinking we must be there by now and then thinking (horror) we must have taken the wrong turn. Lost again.

The Pesticide Fact sheet from National Pesticide Information Center (a cooperative between Oregon State U. and US EPA) says that imidacloprid has a soil life of 188 - 997, days depending on the soil type, in non-agricultural soils. If you want to read more about it (and it is depressing) check out the fact sheet. I totally empathize about the neighbor thing. I keep saying to myself "when did astroturf become the goal"? Certainly Vincent Van Gogh or Monet would never have painted that, finding it ugly and uninteresting. I want my kids to run around in the grass, chew on clover, make daisy chains, explore the small insects, like I did as a kid. I am beginning to question letting them run around the neighbors... The sad part is it is a never ending cycle, you create a monoculture, invite pests, kill the predators, need more chemicals...I haven't sprayed my yard in eight years. Before that, it was minimal. I have very little if any pest problems. More spiders than you can shake a stick at. I know that freaks people our but the rewards are worth it. I live in a suburb of a medium sized city, surrounded by houses. Every year I get amazing migrating birds that no one else gets. I have whole flocks of thrushes in my yard. You can look around the neighborhood and see a flock of migrating birds in my yard and not a single bird in the surrounding houses. The bees are amazing. I must have several bumble bee nests around, not to mention, leaf cutter, small carpenter, sweat, mason, etc. I definitely have more butterflies as well. Yes, it means living with insects, but to think that you can live on this planet without them is not only unrealistic, it is dangerous in the long run. What great ideas! I particularly love the 'handmade paper with water' idea. Talk about nothing to lose -- And we do have two good craft stores nearby, so I think I may just mosey on down there to see what they have in the way of handmade paper, ModPodg, etc. I'm leery of the spray-on stuff because I have such large expanses of glass that any unevenness at all would really show. That Tatouge system is neat too. Wish I'd known about that when I was doing nurseries! The undersea scene shown on the website would have been perfect for my younger son's room. Those Gallery Glass windows are gorgeous Oceana! Are they hard to do? I'm talking about three panes that are each 23" x 66", so that's a lot of space. And given the contents of these closets, I'd need to obscure the entire glass area. Valinsv - That's a great offer and I'd love to take you up on it - Thanks! Cawfe, I know - I'm wishing I never offered it. But, if it turns out that they aren't paying, I'll just pop up a sign and look for other tenants. It is HARD to get people out of a residence, however. I think once they're there and the check goes to ME not DH, they may think twice before skipping that payment. I hope so, anyway. Just need to be sure they all know that my house IS not an option for them anymore... Dana

Susie, if it was the 1 year rabies, that is my guess for the culprit. The annual vaccine is very hard on the dogs and mixing it with 2 others did not help.

If your state allows, use a multi year rabies, and space the shots out over two months. Research the breed a bit further, some cannot tolerate certain vaccines. Check with the breed clubs for reports, the RX companies do not list all breeds that have had adverse reaction. My Skyes could not use heartguard, but other brands were ok for them. Also, try not ot give a topical flea killer and heartworm on the same day or even week.

I am so glad she came out of it but what a scare. Give her a hug from me please.

That's very scary.

I had a similar experience with one of my cats, getting multiple vaccines one year, but got no explanation. I think I know what happened now.

Darn it. That makes me pretty mad. My vet won't even give my 80 lb dog more than two at one time. I'm just glad you saw her when you did and that it turned out good. Scary is right. Was it the 3 year rabies? In future I'd check out titering. A titer test tells you if the dog still has enough in their system to be immune. It's being done more and more to prevent over vaccinating. Phewwww! Smooches to the sweeties.

Oh gosh, I got so scared just reading your post !!! Poor Abbee, and poor you! You must have been scared beyond words!!!

I second the suggestion of getting titers run. They may be a bit more costly, but considering Abbee's reaction to the vaccines, it would be worth having peace of mind.

Unfortunately, in my neck of the woods, the law says all dogs must be licensed, and all dogs must have a rabies vaccination before they can be licensed.

Even of more concern to me is that the amount used in the rabies vaccine is the same for a 20 lb dog as it is for a 150 lb dog. I have two little ones myself (Bichons, 17 lbs and 20 lbs) , and I was aghast when I learned this. Iasked the vet if there was any way he could give my babies *less* than what's in the syringe...by law, he cannot!

My little boy had a major reaction last time he had a rabies vaccine. He got back in the car, then just lay there. When we got him home, he had a very flat affect--he's usually *!boing!* *!boing!* *!boing!* all over the place. He just was real quiet and I knew something was off. Then he started rubbing his muzzle up against anything, then just got a funny look. Back we went to the vet's. They kept him the remainder of the afternoon for observation and he was back to his little happy *!boing!* self. Thankfully your experience and mine both had happy endings.

It was scary!

As for the upcoming vaccine(s) for Apollo, ask about titers? Be prepared to sit and wait in the vet's office for at least an hour or two after your boy gets the injections?

I'll be holding a good thought for you and your little ones!
