Are there babies that need hugs?

My children and grandchildren are grown. No hope of great grand babies and great grand nieces and nephews live 3 thousand miles away. Where can a nice old lady find babies to hug?

At the hospital! Sign up to be a volunteer on the units where kids have to stay for weeks or months. The nurses say that the babies' vitals are better when they're being held. A lot of them have no one around- sometimes they are being detoxed from heroin or alcohol and will eventually be sent to foster families, or the parents are working two shifts to pay the hospital bills, or just don't care. If you have a major hospital near you, some of the families will be far from home, exhausted and terrified, and would give their left arm for a surrogate grandma.

If you're religious, you could also put up a flier in the daycare room at church- grandma with grown grandbabies seeks little ones to cuddle while mom and dad shower, sleep, or go out for dinner. Or in the community flier, if you have one. If you're in an urban area, you could also try www.meetup.com, and look for groups of young parents. You could even start one. I bet there are young parents far from family who would kill for your services! I'd also be curious whether there are any military groups you could get involved with. I've heard that moving around a lot and being stuck at home with young kids can be really overwhelming and lonely.

Nancy, you can give my grandbabies a hug!

And here's Colton who REALLY needed as many hugs as he could get in Emergency. The wonderful nurse gave him a cup of ice chips. It took 6 stitches to sew up that lip and a couple weeks for everything else to heal. It's hard to be almost 2 and take a bad spill from your police car!

Here he is again though back on duty in his squad car!

We have another grandson due in January but his pictures are a bit fuzzy! :)

Mimi and all of you others who have been so wonderful to respond...Thank you from the bottom of my heart. It's hard for us to believe that it's been two weeks tomorrow since this happened. The family have been sustained by an incredible group of friends and faithbased support. They have been surrounded by incredible strength and love and are working their way through these first weeks with that foundation. And me...not family, but feeling so dearly.....I am helped more than you can know by your thoughtful notes of support and prayer through this very hard time. It is impossible to tell you how much these notes from you have meant.

Just how offended should I be, about now? I might need to go sulk for a while! If I was buying two hundred dollar orchids, I certainly wouldn't makin' my clothes outta an old table cloth... I feel your pain and we can look to next year with hope and anticipation. 3/4th of my plants pulled this week. Yet, my SWC did their job well thanks Ray! And I've got some late starts back in them to see what happens in Oct....hoping for a late frost date. At least here in No VA we have almost dodged the bullet on LB. George

I'm so sorry. But this too shall pass and your home will ultimately be wonderful. Ditto what others have said. I would add to that, going forward DOCUMENT EVERYTHING IN WRITING: the ridiculous explanation ("Joe Installer explained to me that the framers should have built the base 1/2" less than specified in the specs but also noted that the framers would have had no way of knowing this..."), and every further conversation and discussion with the framers, installer, etc. Visibly take notes during your next meeting with Joe Installer and write down your questions and his answers and explanations. Ask him to read, date and countersign said notes when your discussion is over. If you are concerned about how a discussion will go, ask a neighbor or friend to be with you during the discussion. The purpose of this friend or neighbor is not just moral support and watching the kiddos, but he/she will stay within earshot and you will also ask her/him to sign your notes as a witness, in front of Joe Installer. This is particularly important if, for example, Joe Installer declines to sign himself. If nothing else, seeing this the subcontractors will begin to take you more seriously and pay extra attention. If needed, these documents will be extremely helpful if you do have to take legal action to get this resolved without paying for a re-do. Been there, done that (not in my current remodel, thank goodness), it works. IMHO, no b-ness is required. You have the facts and logic in your favor. Combined with a calm, no-nonsense, professional manner you will make him see that the only acceptable choice is for him/his firm to eat the cost of redoing it correctly. Umm...? I don't have any "grandbabies" to hug....but there are a lot of grand teens....I might share....but maybe not...;-Q

Hey, I used to be a baby and I sure need a hug today.

There may be a daycare near you that would appreciate your volunteer time, and you'd be repaid with plenty of hugs.
