PCPs & Electrical Transformers

Well, what a bummer.

A word of caution to anybody in Irene's path that had a transformer blow in their vicinity.

I noticed that foliage in our yard didn't look right starting about 2 days ago. It didn't look like wind or salt damage. Foliage was turning a sickly yellow/gold color, shriveling, & dropping.

Today, DH phoned CL&P & asked for environmental services to come take a look. Sure enough. Older transformers contain PCP in the insulating oil & the wind blew the stuff everywhere.

CL&P tested & about half of our landscaping along the west boundary has to be removed as hazardous waste including some of the topsoil. One entire border with mature viburnum 'Shasta', Diablo ninebark, weeping cherry (it was gorgeous!), purple Henry Lauder's Walking Stick (about 12'), on and on about a 100' border. Everything has to go.

If you had a transformer blow, please check your landscaping. If you see anything that doesn't look right call your electric company. They will come immediately & test.

Another caution, we also had tomato plants (flattened anyway) & potatoes in the area. Environmental services told us to not eat the produce.
