Picture of New Hydrangea Pistachio

I got three new 4" rooted cuttings of hydrangea 'Pistachio' this spring. I wasn't expecting blooms this year but look what I've got! Isn't it pretty? I love the color combination of blue, pinkish/red, & green. Anxious to see what it ages to.

It's beautiful. You're lucky you can grow hydrangeas. When I went to Portland, Oregon, I was in awe of all the hydrangeas, as I was when I went to New England several years ago. Sigh, they are a challenge here.

Doing a google search on remontant hydrangeas, brought me to this thread. I own 'Wedding Gown' & 'Pistachio' or 'Glam Rock' as its known across the pond. Both hydrangeas do not get huge figure about 3' X 3'. 'Wedding Gown' I have noticed, in our zone 7 winters w/o protection dies almost to the ground and emerges with new growth in spring. The plant blooms on new wood. I have not encountered 'die to the ground' with 'Pistachio'. Both are well behaved in a Northern exposure and a Western exposure in the shadow of a magnolia.

Check it out! Old wood blooms below, new wood buds appearing up atop new stems. F&E should just scrap the Red program; it's a loser compared to this. My phone's camera may have made the blooms appear magenta, but they are fire-engine red, with the fluorescence of red knockout roses!

Vinsone, do you mean South Dakota by SD? If so, follow the link below to find your hardiness zone. Looks like that would place you somewhere between 3b (-35) to 5b (-15). Pistachio is only rated hardy to -20F. If you're in zone 5a (-20) or 5b, it may work for you if well-sited & heavily Winter protected. If not, you may have success growing Pistachio in pots overwintered in a garage or other shelter. What size pots were your Pistachios in when you got them? Pot size often indicates the age of a plant, with smaller pots for younger plants. I'd be hesitant to plant anything less than a gallon directly in the garden myself. Many pot up smaller sizes into larger pots as they grow to give them the advantage of more controlled conditions till they're more mature, often growing them along in pots & planting out the following Spring after late frosts are past. Depending on your zone, you may find your Pistachios able to adapt to 9-10 hours of sun as they get older, but that's a lot of sun. The tag that came with mine says morning sun, afternoon shade. In the meantime, if your zone allows for growing them in the open garden, shade them past noon while they're so young. Lawn chairs, cheap umbrellas stuck in the ground at an angle to deflect noonday sun, replaceable cardboard propped with stakes or any other juryrig that comes to mind & hand will do in a pinch. Agree with livrerosa's sound advice. If you have a "mist" setting on your watering handle, fine misting is helpful to hydrate the leaves when the rootmass isn't established or large enough to deliver moisture to them under stress. You can mist them in the morning before the sun hits and later under shade with positive benefits several times a day. Mulch helps protect the roots & lower the soil surface temp, but keep it from touching the stems. Trialing two Pistachios in 3-gallon pots here in zone 7a central Virginia the past month, find them doing fine with 7 hours of full sun in an ESE exposure with daytime temps ranging from 70-98. They may take more hours of sun than that - haven't tried. Kept well-watered once a day, no scorch or wilt yet. Bought in bloom & bud, first flowers still fresh, original buds blooming & new buds coming along. With new additions of uncertain sun-shade preferences, like to keep them in pots for a season before planting early September or so, which this zone allows. That way they can be easily repositioned to change exposure if indicated. (The lazy gardener's way of finding their best spot.) These 3-gallons are ready to be moved to 5-gallon pots, and two 1-gallon mophead hydrangeas of other varieties bought late Spring have already been repotted to 3-gallons. You may find it easier to pot your Pistachios now, give them afternoon shade, and plant out again when they're more mature & able to handle your garden conditions. Hydrangea macrophylla 'Pistachio' or what?

Pistachio is the trade name (name under which it is marketed) for the cultivar Hydrangea macrophylla 'Horwack'. Similarly, 'Schloss Wackerbarth' and Glam Rock seem to be the cultivar and trade names of a different H. macrophylla. Tony Advent (owner of Plant Delights Nursery) wrote this explanation, "The current improper use of trademarks in the horticultural industry had its origin more than a half century ago. The worst culprits, in the early years, were the rose and bedding plant industry. The rose industry seems to have been the first to use nonsensical, non-conforming names for plant cultivars, while the bedding plant industry completely thumbed its nose at the Code by not even bothering to come up with any cultivar names for most of their introductions. One of the most famous roses in horticulture is one that everyone knows as Peace. Surprisingly, there is no such plant as Rosa 'Peace'. The plant we grow under this name is actually Rosa 'Madame A. Meilland'. The trade name Peace was coined by Conard Pyle Nursery, and used to market Rosa 'Madame A. Meilland' after World War II to capitalize on the post-war sentiment. The plant became known in the public's mind as the Peace rose. Some of the larger nurseries soon realized that regardless of the cultivar name of the plant, they could come up with their own proprietary (trademarked) marketing name and use these names to promote plants which already had valid cultivar names. The idea was to convince the public that the company's marketing name was actually the name of the plant. The next step in the downward spiral was when nurserymen began intentionally giving their new plants stupid nonsensical cultivar names. Subsequent plant promotions would often only tout the marketing name, causing the consumer to often not realize the plant had a real cultivar name. The cultivar name, if included at all in ads and tags, would be printed in very small print in comparison to the "marketing name". The entire idea is for the company's marketing (trademark) name to become the generic name of the product in the consumer's mind. The practice of using nonsensical names violates the entire purpose for having an International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants while the use of trademarks as generic names violates the legal use of trademarks." I don't know a lot about the rules for plant cultivar names, but this whole thing of having the cultivar name and a cutesy marketing name adds a great deal of confusion to the process of IDing plants. To be technically correct, one should put the cultivar name in single quotes and the trade name not.

I cannot see Picturetrail here, but it looks like a very nice flower from the thumbnail. I first noticed Hydrangeas in Vancouver, where they are extremely common. Very few people grow them here because they require so much water and do not like excessive sun, which is why I guess they like Vancouver so much. The ones I saw seemed to start with blue flowers that would then fade to pink, or maybe they were two completely different flowers. Anyway, they still remind me of Vancouver!!

Yes, hydrangeas do well in most coolish coastal climates like Vancouver and Portland. Portland is where I fell in love with them. That was our "family home" and some of my first garden memories are of hydrangeas in my g-parents' gardens with flowers bigger than my head.

We average close to 1" of rain per week year around with no dry season - perfect for hydrangeas. We also don't have the blazing sun of inland areas. I don't provide auxilliary water for our hydrangeas and I rather doubt Ann T. does either although maybe they have more of a dry season than us?

Lars, yes, the older mophead hydrangeas were blue or white aging to pinkish. Newer hybrids are offering different color combos like this 'Pistachio'.

Tricia, it just occurred to me today (as I was parking) that we have agapanthus here in L.A. instead of hydrangeas. The agapanthus has a somewhat similarly sized ball of flowers in blue, but it is not quite as showy as the hydrangea. Still, the agapanthus grow much more easily here, and you can even throw the plants down on the ground without digging a hole to plant them. I think the hydrangeas are prettier, but we have to take what we can get!

That is a very pretty hydrangea, Tricia! Love the color!

I have several varieties and they seem to like it here. My favorite this season is Limelight. I've had it for 3 years and it finally bloomed this year, and it is FULL of blooms! Starts out greenish, then turns white and now fading into pink.....absolutely beautiful!

I've tried a blue variety but it bloomed blue the first year and then nothing but white after that, even with the rcommended soil additives. Not the best choice for MN I guess.....

We don't have much that put out big blooms like hydrangeas, but we can do roses, and there's a native large shrub/small tree called Texas Mountain Laurel that puts out large, wisteria-like blooms in the spring. They smell like grape kool-aide to me. I guess every region has its stars.

Mountain Laurel (Kalmia latifiolia) is Connecticut's state flower. It's a fragrant medium shrub that grows native from southern coastal Maine to Florida and west to Indiana. So, when you mentioned Texas Mountain Laurel (Calia secundiflora) I had to Google. Different shrub - thank goodness for Latin names or we'd never be able to figure out what's what). Your mountain laurel has beautiful rich blue blooms. Not a good candidate for our acidic soils though and we're probably a tad too cold for it to be a reliable bloomer w/o protection. We're Zone 7 and, apparently, it prefers 8+. :( I'm always looking for something different to plant and I love to zone push. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. Both of my daughters live in Texas - I'll have to ask them about it.

Lars, I love agapanthus and it grows here on the coast well. I've had it in my garden for 6-7 years. Nice plant. Not all varieties are hardy here but Agapanthus 'Blue Globe' has done very well in my gardens.

Linda, yes Hydrangea paniculata 'Limelight' is a beautiful shrub and absolutely cold reliable. Have you tried any of the new hydrangea macrophyllas like 'Pistachio'? They bloom on both old/new wood. So, you should get flowers even if this year's canes die to the ground over winter.
