Little Julia has really grown!

The kids were in from Chicago this weekend so we got together, and my son Nathan and grand-daughter Zoe joined us on Friday afternoon. We went to a place just across the border in Wisconsin that is kind of a petting zoo, but they also have some caged wild animals as well. Then out to dinner. Thought I'd share a couple of photos.

Yep, this is Julia. Hard to believe how she has grown/changed in just 3 months!

And here are my kids with their kids

Zoe thought she was so grown up to be able to hold the baby!

It was a long day for little Juju! (grandma's nickname for her)

Awwww, Linda, "little" Julia isn't as little. Sigh. Wow, she's going to have hair to her waist by the time she's two. Maddie is still almost bald!

Zoe looks proud and I think they both look like you.

Well, I haven't caught you sucking your thumb LATELY, but maybe...(grin)

Oh, they are both so beautiful but it doesn't seem like they should be that big already.

I'm with Annie, time is flying, they are bigger than I would have thought. I read something that makes sense, it's something like this:

In order for the human race to survive we are enchanted by the spell of babies and toddlers. In any other case their behavior might be called terrorism but when a little tiny baby screams and shouts at you all day long it is just motherhood.

I grew the blue bacopa from seeds this year. I got them from Ebay. They are tiny little seedlings, but almost all of what I sowed in the house under lights grew. I put some in a hanging basket and some in a pot with other plants. Both were in full sun from 7 am till about 8 pm. They are still in full bloom. I'm going to try bringing them in the house for the winter in the next few days as it supposed to frost.

Thanks Annie. It is so hot. I am beginning to wish for fall. It is forecast that we will stay near, at, or a little over 100 for the next few days with heat index up to 110. The greenhouse is very hot now even with the fan and the shadecloth. It's,106 a lot of the time. I have to water also. I think I will put in some type of system to irrigate part of the yard before next year. Even my butterfly bushes got into some trouble with the heat and the shortage of rain. I am enjoying the new garden and the butterfly visitors. I am planning to put a little rose garden in, but, as I said earlier in this thread, I had to bring the first little roses indoors. They are doing quite well for now, and putting out new growth. When it gets under 90 for a few days, I will start trying to harden them off to the outside, but not until then. Boy, I can imagine you don't want to burn out your pump or run out of water. It is really hard when you need to water (have to in this heat) and the water isn't plentiful. Isn't there always something to worry about? I guess it keeps our brains nimble. kay

It is possible that lack of light could cause the lower production. Also, given your region, it might be lack of heat. Unless you have really poor soil, I wouldn't suspect that problem. And, no, I wouldn't trim the vines. Do you see pollinators around the flowers? If not, that could indeed be a factor in low yield. Some parts of the country have a great scarcity of pollinators. If this is the case, then hand pollination would certainly be worth a try. It is not too early for those squash to have ripened. I don't know this variety. But it is from the c. maxima family, and those squash often ripen fairly quickly. See if you can dent their skin with your finger nail. If you can, leave them on the vine until you can't. Once you can't dent the skin with your fingernail I'd say they are ripe. Days to maturity are almost always more of an estimate. Conditions affect this so much. So don't just go by DTM. Can you camouflage your squash to protect them from being stolen? If I had that problem I'd probably lay a light layer of dried weeds over top of them, to obscure them from view. Hope this helps! Wow. Long time no see on that thread. Thanks for dredging it up. The Mimulus cardinalis is a sad story. I planted three of them in the fall of '05, and they just never took. I could tell they weren't settling in, and then the cold weather came and I had a bad feeling about them. Spring of '06 came and they did not survive. I called Joy Creek, and told them the sad story. I said it might have been too late in the year to successfully plant them. They very kindly agreed to send 3 replacement plants, and I put them in immediately. They settled in nicely, putting out new growth and I was feeling very hopeful about them. That summer, misfortune struck. We had workmen redo our front sidewalk. There were 4 or 5 guys, very nice fellows, but pretty clueless about plants. I pointed to the Mimulus and made sure to tell at least one of the workmen to please be very careful not to trample them. I'm sure you can tell where this sad story is leading. I went inside for a bit, and when I came out, all three plants were ground down to mush. They never recovered and this time I knew there wouldn't be any free replacements. Maybe I'll try to order some more this spring and try again. They really had been settling in quite nicely, and I could have just died when they got stomped. I should have told all of the workmen, not just one guy. What a disappointment. I wish you luck with them, flutterbug, and thanks for resurrecting this old thread. I'll let you know if I decide to try again.

Linda, they are just darling. Gosh, little Juju has so much hair & look at those eyelashes! Is Zoe a strawberry blond? She looks like she loves life! They are precious. You're right - they grow so very fast. You blink and they've grown 4".

Enjoy them - thanks for the pictures. It's so fun to watch CF children and grandchildren grow.

LOL, Cathy that quote is spot on!

Tricia, Zoe's hair is more a light auburn color. She is the spitting image of Sarah, her mom.

Annie, nope.....quit sucking my thumb a couple of months back. Cold turkey.

Oh, Cathy....she is absolutely precious! But she certainly doesn't need TWO young men! LOL

One of Ellen's boys can be for Lily and one can be for Zoe. (Julia will just have to wait for the next generation of cute boys!)
